COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY Beginning Computers for Senior Citizens (55+) Instructor: Cindy Wyles Location: Room 133, Wilson Building Date: January 30 Friday FREE Time: 2:00-4:00 p.m. This course is designed for individuals who have never used a computer. Learn to turn on a computer, navigate with a mouse, open programs, play games, surf the Internet, and send e-mail with attachments. Introduction to Computers Instructor: Cindy Wyles Location: Room 133, Wilson Building Date: Feb. 10-19 Tuesday/Thursday Time: 6:00-8:00 p.m. Fee: $35 Do you feel confused, frustrated and lost when it comes to computers? All of the techno-babble is eliminated and replaced with simple explanations and hands-on learning in our computer lab. We ll start with learning what to do with the mouse and keyboard and other basic skills necessary to navigate around the computer. We ll work with Windows, the Internet and e-mail. Intermediate to Computers Instructor: Cindy Wyles Location: Room 133, Wilson Building Date: Feb. 24 March 5 Tuesday/Thursday Time: 6:00-8:00 p.m. Fee: $35 This class provides a greater depth of knowledge about computers fundamentals. Individuals will work with Word, email, internet searches, and other standard applications on computers. Requirement: Introduction to Computers or basic knowledge or navigation with the mouse and keyboard. Microsoft Word 2010 & Microsoft Excel Beginning Instructor: Cindy Wyles Location: Room 133, Wilson Building Date: March 24-April 2 Tuesday/Thursday Time: 6:00-8:00 p.m. Fee: $35 A must for computer users looking to update skills for the modern workplace. This class introduces the participant to Microsoft Word & Excel 2010. With Word learn to create, edit, print and store simple word processing documents on a computer. Identify and use the Office Icon. With Excel learn the concept of a spreadsheet and recognize Excel screen elements. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT American Sign Language (ASL) Instructor: Sieben Chatman Date: February 3-24 Tuesday NEW Time: 6:00-9:00 p.m. The participants will learn the concept and common signs like ABC s, numbers, colors, person signs, tenses signs, group signs, sentence lessons, along with cool and funny signs. They will also learn a brief history and the importance of understanding ASL. Cricut Crafting Instructor: Melodie Babineaux Date: April 6 April 27 Monday Time: 6:00-9:00 p.m. Learn all about your cricut! In this class participants will learn the functions and step-by-step instructions on the parts of the cricut machine. Project will include letter blocks and signs which involves vinyl. There is a $5.00 supplies fee that will need to be paid to the instructor the first day of class. You will be required to bring your own cricut machine to class. Horn/Curly Mesh Wreath Workshop Instructor: Melodie Babineaux Date: February 23 Monday Time: 6:00-9:00 p.m. Fee: $15 plus supplies In this workshop you will learn the technique of assembling a horn/ curly mesh wreath. Each participant will create their own unique wreath. You will have a wonderful time working together in creating and assembling your wreath with friends! PHOTOGRAPHY SERIES Photoshop Elements 11.0 Instructor: Eino Liback Location: Room 133, Wilson Building Date: March 2-April 6 Monday Time: 6:00-9:00 p.m. Basic Digital Photography Instructor: Eino Lilback Date: March 3-April 7 Tuesday Time: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Bird Photography Instructor: Eino Lilback Location: Room 133, Wilson Building Date: April 25 Saturday Time: 8:00 am 12:30 p.m. Learn to use Adobe s Photoshop Elements image processing software to edit, create and share your digital images. Improvements to Photoshop Elements 11.0 include an overhauled interface, refined selection tools, a guided edit mode, enhanced retouching tools, new tools to create composite images, special artwork effects, a streamline image organizer, simple image fixes and more. This is a hands-on course and each student will have computer access to practice various image editing techniques. No prerequisites, but a basic understanding of digital photography is recommended. Learn the fundamentals of digital photography. Subjects covered include design and operation of basic digital cameras including pixels, resolution, file size, various camera shooting modes, exposure control, depth of field, elements of photographic composition, general camera handling techniques and other topics. Bring personal digital camera to class. Lamar State College-Orange Continuing This class covers both technical and artistic fundamentals of bird photography. Technical topics include exposure control, depth-of-field control, sharpness control plus DSLR camera, telephoto lens, tripod & tripod head features & specifications. Artistic topics include basic composition plus special effects including deliberate subject blur and other creative effects. Techniques covered include both capturing both static and in-flight bird image. Student requirements include a basic understanding of digital photography plus at least 1-2 years of hands on experience using a DSLR camera and telephoto lens. This course includes a field trip to High Island, TX on Saturday April 25. HEALTH SCIENCES COURSES Phlebotomy Instructor: Carol Gaspard Date: February 2 March 30 Monday Time: 5:00-9:00 p.m. Fee: $450 Other fees (approximate): $40 background check; $10 Student ID, $70 book, and $40 Cherokee Brand Pewter Gray scrubs Copy of immunization record, TB test and the Hepatitis B vaccine series required. Intravenous Therapy Course, Date: May 15 Day: Friday Time: 8:00 am 5:00 pm Fee: $100.00 Plus Book Instructor: Ricky Land This 68 hour Phlebotomy course offers 32 classroom hours comprised of theory and hands-on training, as well as scheduling for 36 hours of clinical time. Topics such as but not limited to, equipment, technique, safety and infection control are covered in the required book. Practice begins on training devices and graduates to live skin. Techniques taught consist of capillary puncture, syringe, vacutainer, winged infusion sets and blood culture draws. On the completion of all course requirements a Certificate of Completion will be awarded. Note: This program does not include a national or state certification as part of its overall objectives. 8 hour course covering procedures, policies and techniques for starting IV s. Includes discussions and demonstrations of different size needles, angiocaths, IV tubing and other materials needed to start an IV. The course includes practicing actual starts on manikins. IT also will introduce the student to the process of hanging piggybacks for medication administration. The course is not for Phlebotomy Certification. This course is recognized by the American Heart Association for Medication Administration and PharmAmercia for IV Therapy. Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Date: January 31; March 28 & May 30 Day: Saturday Time: 7:00 am 1:00 pm Fee: $100.00 Plus Book Instructor: Ricky Land 8 hours recertification course through the American Heart Association. This course will refresh the student on new techniques introduced by the AHA for ACLS. The course will include didactic and skills needed to be able to perform the necessary procedures in the cardiac or stroke patient. Upon completion of the course the student will receive a course completion certificate. Pediatric Advanced Life Support Date: Feb. 28 & April 25 Day: Saturday Time: 7:00 am 1:00 pm Fee: $100.00 Plus Book Instructor: Ricky Land 8 hours recertification course through the American Heart Association. This course will refresh the student on new techniques introduced by the AHA for PALS. The course will included didactic and skills needed to be able to perform the necessary procedures in the pediatric patient. Upon completion of the course the student will receive a course completion certificate. EMT Basic Transition Course Date: April 7 16 Day: Tuesday & Thursday Time: 5:00 am 9:00 pm Fee: $100.00 Plus Book Instructor: Ricky Land 16 hour course for the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician- Basic. The course will introduce the student to new procedures for the EMT-B and changes as set forth by the NREMT. Upon completion of the course the student will receive a certificate of completion for the transition program. Emergency Medical Responder Date: April 21-May 21 Day: Tuesday & Thursday Time: 5:00 am 9:00 pm Fee: $300 Plus Book Instructor: Ricky Land 40 hour course meeting the criteria for an Emergency Medical Responder at the National Registry of EMT s level. This course is the equivalent of the Texas Emergency Care Attendant course. The course includes didactic and skills necessary for the student to receive both National and Texas certifications at the EMR/ECA level. Upon completion of the course the student will receive a course completion certificate qualifying the student to take the National Registry Exam. 8

Course contents include: key definitions, operator responsibilities, basic aerial &scissor lift principles, pre-shift inspections (site & equipment), site and machine precautions, safety devices, fall restraint, elevated driving requirements, capacity limits, entering & exiting the lifts, proper & improper uses, and power line safety. This training will include hands-on training, evaluations, and a written exam. Course prerequisite-previous experience with hydraulic equipment operation. Learn how to prevent accidents, injuries and fatalities that may be caused by improper and unsafe use of Forklifts & Powered Industrial Trucks. This course will explain the requirements of OSHA 1910.178 Powered Industrial Trucks. Course contents include: key definitions, operator responsibilities, basic forklift principles, pre-shift inspections (site & equipment), site and machine safety measures, refueling & charging batteries, personnel protection including seatbelts and roll over protection systems, hazardous locations, traveling on grades, capacity limits, proper use of attachments, and power line safety. This training will include hands-on training, evaluations, and a written exam. Course prerequisite-previous experience with hydraulic equipment operation. Learn how to prevent accidents, injuries and fatalities that may be caused by improper and unsafe use of Backhoe/Loaders. Course contents include: key definitions, operator responsibilities, basic backhoe/loader principles, pre-shift inspections (site & equipment), site and machine safety measures, refueling & charging batteries, personnel protection including seatbelts and roll over protection systems, hazardous locations, traveling on grades, capacity limits, proper use of attachments, safety awareness of immediate surroundings & underground utilities, general digging & slope hazards, loading/unloading/towing considerations, lock-out/tagout procedures, securing the machine from moving, use of jacks & hoists, pressurized fluids, refueling & fire hazards, and tire handling & hazards. How to Register Registration may be handled in person at the Continuing Education Department at 506 Green Avenue. You may also register over the phone by calling 409-882-3321. We accept check, money order, VISA, MasterCard and Discover. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Full payment is required at the time of registration. Register by Mail Complete the registration form on the back of the schedule and return it with a check or money order to Lamar State College-Orange, Attn: Continuing Education Dept., 410 Front Street, Orange, Texas, 77630. Checks and money orders should be made payable to Lamar State College-Orange or LSC-O. Tuition payment MUST accompany all registration forms. Refund and Transfer Policies Students will receive full (100 percent) refunds if they cancel the enrollment agreement prior to the first class day. No refunds will be given on the first day of class or thereafter. Books and Supplies If a textbook is required, it will be noted in the course description. Supply lists will be distributed the first class day or at the time of registration for those courses requiring special materials. Faculty Instructors for non-credit programs are selected from various area businesses, industries and educational institutions, as well as from the Lamar State College-Orange faculty. If you are interested in teaching a continuing education class please call us at 409-882-3321. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) Students may be awarded CEUs upon the successful completion of specified courses. One (1) CEU is issued for every 10 contact hours. Certificates are awarded based on successful course completion for selected courses. Successful course completion will be determined by one of two criteria: (1) attending 80 percent of class meetings and/or (2) making a passing grade on course content. Class Cancellation A minimum number of students are required for each course. Classes with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled, registrants will be notified and fees will be refunded. Refunds may take four to six weeks to be processed. Register Early Don t delay. Register for the course of your choice as soon as possible. Classes have limited enrollment and fill quickly. OOPS! We cancelled your class because we didn t know you were interested. Sometimes excellent classes with super instructors are canceled because people wait to register. Our programs need a minimum number enrolled before a class can run. So, don t wait! Avoid disappointment by registering early! 11
