13. International Workshop City and Traffic Erfurt, 20. 27. July 2008 TOPIC STREET DESIGN ON THE NORDHÄUSER STRAßE IN ERFURT MORITZWALLSTRASSE AND ERHARD-ETZLAUB-STRASSE SECTION 1. BACKGROUND INFORMATION The section of the NORDHÄUSER STRAßE under consideration is located in the northern historical old part of the city in an area which was typical for Wilhelminian style of 1871. The lanes and the pavements have suffered from heavy wear and tear and the trees and the front gardens are only partially in tact. The following idealized crosssection is set out below. The NORDHÄUSER STRAßE is one of the main arterial streets in Erfurt and acts as a link between the city centre and the residential areas in the northern part of the town. In addition, it connects the city centre with the locations of the Helios-Clinic and the University. (The traffic volume can be seen in the attached intersection plans) At the same time the NORDHÄUSER STRAßE is one of the major Light Rail Transit lines in Erfurt s Public Transport System. The high priority Light Rail Transit lines 3 and 6 together with the bus line 90 use this street. Besides, this street is also a main route for bicyclists between the city centre and the University. Despite the huge demand, there are at present no bicycle tracks. 2. OBJECTIVES FOR THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE STREET: Radical reconstruction of the NORDHÄUSER STRAßE has been planned with the objective to make this area more attractive by revitalization for the residential houses. At the moment trees, masts and other installations are not the determining factors (obstacles) for the future plans. A new street design is to fulfil all the following requirements (if possible): Transport: The present automobile traffic capacity should be maintained The operation of public transport with its high priority lines should be guaranteed; the bus line number 90 is to be integrated into the Light Rail Transit line system. Installation of bus stops with a platform height of 22 cm for both the Light Rail Transit and the bus to be of service to handicapped persons (if possible) Integration of separate bicycle tracks (the alignment must be taken into consideration) There should be installations for pedestrians which are sufficiently wide and safety General parking and delivery facilities should be available

Design and Green Spaces The existing front gardens should be preserved or redesigned A continuous avenue of trees should be planted along the street Upgrading of the buildings along the street 3. OPTIONS FOR THE RESTRUCTURING OF THE STREET: Within the framework of the workshop there are four section options for the NORDHÄUSER STRAßE which are still in the process of being worked through. For this purpose the participants will be split into eight teams. Two teams work independently on the same project. N. B.: Lateral positioning of the Light Rail Transit is to be excluded because of the complex traffic situation 4. FURTHER REMARKS 1. Issues on the capacity / Traffic signals coordination of the NORDHÄUSER STRAßE are not of interest. But at the end of the project you should assess how the present traffic volume can be integrated into the solution of the problem. 2. You also have to integrate issues on the organisation of traffic especially in terms of transition areas between the present situation and the new solution as well as for the junction areas. The results should be assessed. 3. The present system of the divided ring road system in this area like a one way system (Bergstraße and Blumenstraße Moritzwallstraße) must be kept. 4. The development of the residential areas under the regulation of one-way streets in the side road network and the limitations of the turning relations has proved itself. If there are any changes, they must be explained. 5. The existing access roads to the real property and left-turn movements must be noted by the groups und must be taken into consideration during the project work. 6. The existing Light Rail Transit and bus stops must be kept in any case. It is possible to alter their locations, but the main access conditions must be guaranteed. 7. The following specific measurements must be respected track gauge of the Light Rail Transit: 1.00 metre Width of coach body of the Light Rail Transit: 2.30 metres Minimum distance between centres of the line: 2.70 metres plus additional width Length for Light Rail Transit stations: 60 metres Length of Bus stops: 18 metres

5. WORK IN GROUPS Groups 1 + 2 Option A Cross-section in which the Public Transport has the maximum priority: Development of a limited track superstructure which can be crossed in emergency cases (accident, Rescue Services); the borders should be defined by marking or with a circular kerb (half bord) of 5cm; in exceptional cases it is possible to use the tracks for turning left or right When planning the stops both options? with stop refuges (station island) with boarding aids and raised roads should be thoroughly investigated and assessed together with their advantages and disadvantages. Groups 3 + 4 Option B Cross-section with partial or directional use of the Light Rail Transit line by cars Public Transport has the maximum priority The supply and disposal of all plots of land is to be proved The traffic solution when transferring from the present situation to the junction of the new Cross-section should be thoroughly investigated Groups 5+ 6 Option C Create a solution from the point of view of design with a completely new street division as a defined space Concentration of car transit on the Light Rail Transit line area Construction of service roads, which can also serve as bicycle traffic The arrangement of trees and parking lanes is carried out between the used Light Rail Transit line area and the used service roads Public Transport has the maximum priority The traffic solution transferring from the present situation of the junction of the new Cross-section is to be proved in a detailed way. Groups 7+ 8 Option D The minimum solution with complete traffic guidance of the car traffic in the Light Rail Transit line area Complete traffic guidance of the car traffic in the Light Rail Transit line area, exceptions in the intersection area are possible Combined tree and parking lanes border on the Light Rail Transit line area and on the road Public Transport has the maximum priority The supply and disposal of all plots of land is to be proved The traffic solution transferring from the present situation to the junction of the new Cross-Section is to be proved in a detailed way.
