Canoeing Canoes offer a great way to discover the delights of this fragile wetland. Canoeing is ideal for exploring some of the quieter, less tidal areas - some of which are inaccessible to larger boats. We don't recommend canoeing in the lower reaches. If you do, you need to be extremely experienced, fit and able. Canoeing in the Broads is suitable for all the family, including young children. Canadian canoes usually carry up to three adults but you are advised to check with the operator. Full instructions are given, and buoyancy aids are provided and fitted on site and are to be worn at all times on or around the water. Waterproof bags or dry bags and local maps are also available from the centres. All Broads Canoe Hire Association Centres are inspected and monitored for safety by the Broads Authority as part of the licensing agreement. At times of adverse weather (especially strong winds) the centres will unfortunately not be hiring to protect customer safety. Most hire centres are open from April to October. Norwich market Autumn into winter Golden leaves and golden reeds ready for harvest Some boatyards stay open right through the winter, for day trips and winter holidays, and so do some bike hire centres and other places to visit, such as Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden at South Walsham, Wroxham Barns, and the Bure Valley Railway which runs between Aylsham and Wroxham. Cottages, lodges, hotels, and bed and breakfasts will all be happy to welcome you too, as will the many pubs, cafes and restaurants which are open right through the year. Autumn and winter are great times for walking in the Broads, especially if you re interested in birds. White-fronted geese fly in from Russia and bean geese from Scandinavia, while thousands of pink-footed geese travel down from Iceland and Greenland. The nature reserves at Ranworth, Upton, Hickling, Horsey, Strumpshaw, Surlingham and Carlton are all open for walks. If you want to venture somewhere really wild, try the RSPB s reserve at Berney Marshes and Breydon Water. There s no access by road but you can reach it by train from Norwich, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft (get off at Berney Arms), from the moorings on the River Yare, by walking along the Wherryman s Way from Great Yarmouth or Reedham, or by public footpath from Halvergate village. If you like remote places then try Haddiscoe Island too - you can walk right round the island s perimeter, bordered by the River Yare, the River Waveney and the New Cut. Look out for marsh harriers, cormorants and perhaps a hare bounding through the grass. Go under Haddiscoe Flyover near St Olaves to reach the Right: The Galley, Horning footpath. For somewhere lovely and a little less remote, walk along the River Ant between Ludham Bridge and How Hill. Refreshed by the great outdoors, why not make Christmas shopping part of your holiday? Villages in the Broads offer specialist shops and galleries for local food, drink and art, and farmers markets and WI markets are also good sources of local produce. Stop off in Norwich and you can enjoy the bright lights of one of the top shopping destinations in the country, with shops large and small, as well as the Monday to Saturday open air market which has operated in the Market Place since Norman times. The days of high summer may be long gone but the Broads is a place for all seasons! www.enjoythebroads.com 21
