Beauty Therapy } Beauty Therapy is a dynamic and exciting industry with ever-changing styles and techniques to stay ahead of. Working with industry professionals in fully-equipped real world situations in our salons, Knowsley Community College can help you specialise in specific areas of this competitive industry to start your career from beauty therapy to nails, theatrical make-up and more. Possible Careers Make-Up Artist As a Make-Up Artist, you would be responsible for ensuring that models, performers and presenters have suitable make-up and hairstyles before they appear in front of cameras or an audience. This could involve producing special effect make-up for an actor in a horror film, or perhaps effective make-up for a news reader. Make-Up Artists can usually charge between 200 and 300 a day, depending on experience. Spa Therapist A Spa Therapist can be asked to perform a range of treatments for both genders, in a relaxing environment. At a more senior level, they may also be asked to introduce new and innovative treatments to make the spa stand out from its competitors. You could expect to earn between 18,000 and 28,000 per year. Nail Technician Nail Technicians are responsible for providing a range of nail based treatments, from the basic shape and polish manicure, to the more advanced, including repairing and rebuilding damaged nails. Level 1 Beauty Therapy On this practical based course, you will learn by completing a variety of treatments in our industrial salons working in a realistic environment. To enhance your treatments, you will also complete theoretical tasks, assignments and written tests. Units you will study include: Pedicure Essentials Manicure Essentials Salon Reception Duties Providing Skin Care Treatments You will be assessed though continuous assessment of coursework, oral questions, portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and written tests. At least 4 GCSEs or equivalent at grade E or above including English and/or Maths, or relevant entry level qualifications. Once you have completed this qualification you may progress on to our Level 2 Beauty Therapy. Level 2 Beauty Therapy Working in our professional salons, you will learn all aspects of skin care, as well as waxing, manicure techniques and product knowledge through on-going assessment of your skills, using oral questions and written assignments. Industrial training is available to all learners through reputable manufacturers which will enhance your studies and improve your employability. The course includes the following units: Performing Waxing Services Provide Facial Skin Care Provide Manicure Services Enhance the Appearance of Eyebrows and Eyelashes Assessment is through the ongoing observation of practical skills, tests, oral questions along with the production of a portfolio of evidence. Students should have a Level 1 Beauty Therapy qualification along with Level 1 English/Maths or 4 GCSEs grade C or above which must include English/Maths. Beauty Therapy Level 2 Hair and Media Make-Up This qualification has been specifically designed to enable you to learn aspects of both hairdressing and media make-up, creating pieces that are fit for both television and film. The course includes the following units: The Creative Art of Dressing Hair The Art of Photographic Make-Up Plaiting and Twisting Client Consultation for Hair Services Practical assessments, exams and theory packs to complete portfolio. Students should have a Level 1 Beauty Therapy qualification along with Level 1 English/Maths or 4 GCSEs grade C or above which must include English/Maths. Once you have completed this qualification you may progress on to our Level 3 Beauty Therapy or Level 3 Nail Services courses. KEY FACT Our Mojo salons are open to the public for a range of treatments at competitive prices. Level 3 Beauty Therapy An intensive and thorough course which covers both theory and practical aspects of Level 3 Beauty Therapy. During this course the student will experience a range of electrical and manual treatments, and work on external clients. Anatomy and physiology forms a large part of the course. The course includes the following units: Body and Facial Electrical Treatments Body Massage Treatments Electrical Epilation Treatments Assessment is done via practical work, external exam and research assignments. You will need a Level 2 qualification in a relevant area as well as English Language and Maths at GCSE grade C, or relevant Functional Skills as appropriate to the course. Students must also be highly motivated and work both as a team and on their own, using their own initiative. Level 3 Theatrical, Special Effects and Hair and Media Make- Up This qualification has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills to an advanced level through a variety of techniques. Units you will study include: Special Effects and Camouflage Make-up How to Apply Ready-made Prosthetics Applying Airbrush Make-up Assessment will be on going throughout the course through observation of practical skills, online tests, oral questions and the production of a portfolio. You should have completed your Level 2 qualification in Media Make-Up. Upon completing this course, you could progress onto job roles within different areas of the industry include, stage, television, film and independent salons. KEY FACT We have recently worked with the FG4 project, led by Asda and Next s George Davies, to provide make-up services for school catwalk models. Level 3 Nail Technology Studies This course will advance your knowledge and existing skills in relation to advanced nail techniques. You will have the opportunity to study 3D Acrylic and embedding nail art, as well as learning how to organise demonstrations and implement promotions for a professional salon. You will have an opportunity to participate in competitions both in and outside of college. Units that you will study include: Contribute to the Planning and Implementation of Promotional Activities. Develop a Range of Creative Nail Images. Enhance and Maintain Nails Using Liquid and Powder Enhance Nails Using Electric Files Assessment will be ongoing throughout the course through observation of practical skills, online tests, oral questions and the production of a portfolio. Manicure and Pedicure are a pre-requisite to Level 3 Nail Services, however both of these qualifications can be obtained through additional tuition over a period of 6 weeks for those that do not meet with the requirements.
