About VTCT VTCT is the leading specialist awarding organisation for the beauty and spa therapy, nail services, and complementary therapy sectors, with the widest range of specialist qualifications on offer. VTCT qualifications range from small individual awards to large diplomas, from Entry Level through to Level 4. VTCT invests heavily in the health and beauty industry and is the primary sponsor for the CEN European Standard for Beauty Salon Services and the main sponsor for WorldSkills UK beauty therapy and related industry competitions. VTCT works very closely with industry, employers and professional associations such as FHT and BABTAC. Interestingly, it was VTCT who originally coined the phrases beauty therapy and holistic therapy, back in the 1960s. As a government approved awarding organisation offering National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) and other Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQs) VTCT has awarded world class qualifications since 1962 and has been at the forefront of developing the vocational system of qualifications in the United Kingdom ever since. VTCT also awards qualifications internationally and has an ever expanding list of centres in Ireland, Italy, Malta, Cyprus, Kenya, India, South Africa and Australia. Further expansion into overseas markets is one of VTCT s main goals. With a head office in Eastleigh, Hampshire, VTCT employs around 50 office-based staff and a field force of over 90 external verifiers. 16-19 Study Programmes 1 2 3 4 A substantial vocational qualification These are widely respected qualifications, valued by employers and seen as a passport into an occupation. A substantial qualification should make up at least half of a learner s Study Programme. Qualifications should provide a nationally or locally recognised route into a trade, profession or other form of employment, or access to a university or higher education course. English and mathematics Learners who have not yet achieved A*-C in these GCSE subjects are expected to be working towards this level, as part of their individual Study Programme. GCSE qualifications are the preferred qualification option for learners, however, functional skills can be taught and undertaken in replace of GCSE qualifications as part of a Study Programme. Enrichment and pastoral care Learner activity and care should be designed to support a learner s individual needs, including employability skills, and enable them to participate in other activities of value. Although this component of a Study Programme can be non-certified, learners benefit from following a specified syllabus with structured assessment of learning outcomes, quality assurance, and recognition of achievement through certification. Work-related activity Work experience has been identified as an attribute young people need to demonstrate most in order to secure employment. Work experience will vary depending on the type of qualifications studied; therefore, the style, content, timing, length and objectives of purposeful work placements will need to be adapted to meet those needs. GCSE Equivalent Qualifications VTCT Qualifications included in 14-16 Performance Tables 2016 Hairdressing and beauty therapy has been, and remains, an extremely popular vocational area which enthuses young people. VTCT has launched a new qualification specifically for schools the VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy (VRQ) (AM20530) and is pleased to announce that this qualification has now been accepted for inclusion in the 2016 Key Stage 4 Performance Tables giving it GCSE equivalence. The aim of this qualification is to use the fascinating hair and beauty sector as a vehicle to develop learners broadly with a range of skills and knowledge that will facilitate progression to a wide range of further learning and careers.
