The MSC supports flexible working, so the pattern of hours may vary according to operational and personal needs. Weekend work may be required occasionally. The post holder will be required to undertake some international travel and overnight stays. No overtime is payable, however under certain circumstances Time Off In Lieu is granted. This is a contract with a time limit for a factual reason (Befristung wegen eines sachlichen Grundes) to substitute the job holder during maternity and parents time until 28 February 2017. 25 days per annum, plus statutory holidays. A. JOB SUMMARY The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is a global not for profit organisation, established in 1999 to address the problem of unsustainable fishing and to ensure healthy oceans for the future. Our mission is to use our ecolabel and fishery certification program to contribute to the health of the world s oceans by recognising and rewarding sustainable fishing practices, influencing the choices people make when buying seafood, and working with our partners to transform the seafood market to a sustainable basis. Successful communications and marketing is vital to driving awareness of the MSC program and use of our ecolabel. We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Communications Manager to lead MSC s communications and marketing activities in Germany, Switzerland and Austria and promote and enhance the organisation s profile and partner engagement. Reporting to the Program Director, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland the Communications Manager will oversee the communications department in the German MSC office. He/she will plan, develop, and implement communication and marketing activities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in line with MSC s global communications strategy and monitor and measure the effectiveness of various communications approaches. To be successful in the role, the Communications Manager will have experience in developing and delivering high-quality, innovative communications and marketing across multiple channels. Alongside the strategic elements of the role, he/she will be hands-on in day-to-day operational activities and will therefore need relevant technical skills and abilities. He/she will also lead MSC s media engagement in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, social media presence, and generate communication materials as required. He/she will work in close co-operation with communications staff in other MSC offices, including the central Global Communications team. B. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE Reporting to the Program Director, the key responsibilities include: Strategy: Devise and implement MSC communications and marketing strategy and action plan that strengthens the MSC s profile and reinforces and grows support and engagement among key stakeholders Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the agreed communication and marketing activities Provide advice and counsel to the Program Director, and MSC team in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, on all PR, communications and marketing opportunities and activities
Marketing: Develop and direct measurable multi-channel, promotional and marketing campaigns Analyse marketing campaign results against overall objectives and KPIs and report on campaign performance and effectiveness Represent the MSC at public events and other educational and outreach opportunities Media Relations: Prepare news releases, speaking notes, media kits and monitor editorial calendars to proactively identify media and public relations opportunities Oversee media and social media monitoring and analysis Establish and maintain good working relationships with media contacts, respond to media inquiries and act as an MSC spokesperson for Germany, Austria and Switzerland when necessary Design, execute and monitor media strategies and activities, including press conferences, press trips and one-to-one briefings, and generate press release, backgrounders and other written materials as required Issues Management: Liaise with Corporate Communications team to manage and enhance reputation through consistent messaging and branding Identify and manage risk issues before they become crises in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and coordinate issues and crisis communications planning Recommend strategies to minimize risk and maximize understanding of MSC in Germany, Austria and Switzerland Understand comparative roles of social and traditional media in a crisis. Content generation and collateral: Work with partners and key stakeholders to develop stories, case studies, photo commissions and other creative approaches to bring to life the MSC s work in Germany, Austria and Switzerland Initiate, design and deliver communications and marketing collateral, managing translations, printing and digital distribution Establish relationships with key creative, design and research agencies Adhere to the MSC s brand guidelines and undertake quality control. Online and social media: Manage MSC s website in German, ensuring up-to-date, accurate and compelling content and stories, and develop and oversee MSC s social media presence in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Other: Ensure that project management best practices are employed to deliver all marketing and communications within strategy, budget, and deadline. Undertake any other responsibilities assigned by the Program Director or Regional Director.

PERSON SPECIFICATION Technical Skills and Experience At least 5 years professional experience in a similar or transferable role is required Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate complex issues in a clear manner to a wide variety of audiences across diverse channels (online, TV, print, radio) Excellent ability to write in an interesting and persuasive style for different audiences Excellent in German grammar and spelling.
