FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DAVIS: id you know that we are within a year or two of some D major anniversary celebrations in our community? In the Fall of 2015, Saint Theresa Catholic School will begin its 90th year of operation, educating the Catholic children from the Coral Gables area, serving as one of the oldest and largest Catholic grade schools in the Archdiocese of Miami. In April of 2016, the Church of the Little Flower will celebrate its 90th anniversary of its founding, becoming the second oldest parish in Miami-Dade County. And then, on December 8th of 2017, the original church of our parish, now Comber Hall, will celebrate the 90th anniversary of its ecclesiastical and liturgical dedication. Wow! 90 years! Many celebrations, special events, historical recognition ceremonies, Galas, and designations will surely be highlights of these anniversary years. If you would like to serve on the 90th anniversary committee, we are currently gathering names of people who will assist the members of our Parish Council as we begin to chart a course for the special occasions soon to take shape in our community. We would welcome your input. I am happy to announce that we are approaching a total of $211,000 in pledges and contributions to this year s ABCD. Our archdiocesan goal, as I mentioned before, is $236,000. So, we still have a little ways to go to meet our goal. Nevertheless, allow me to thank profusely all those who have lovingly involved themselves in this very important annual campaign. Together we are strong in the Lord! Those who have not yet made a pledge are invited to join us in solidarity as we seek to achieve our goal. A full report will be given, as soon as the complete printout of data comes to my office. I am pleased to also report that we are nearly finished with the second floor renovation of the office building. Following the water damage of this past summer, an entire half of the second floor had to be gutted, rebuilt, and refurnished, including airconditioning duct work, and wiring. All is just about in tip top shape, now, as we await the arrival of some new furnishings and the installation of new phones and computers. The renovated space will provide us a new conference room and four new offices. As part of the renovation, we have contracted Windstream, a telecommunications company, to install new computers, phones, and a secure network server for use by the fifteen members of our professional staff. All these enhancements to the second floor are being completely covered by the insurance disbursement which has come to us from the evaluation done by the insurance adjuster. It has been an uncomfortable and stressful past few months as this project has gradually taken shape. Yet, we re almost there! We ll soon have an open house to show you the results. With the support of the Finance Council, last year s ABCD overage which came back to Little Flower was designated to address the pressing need of the window replacement project at the rectory house. Thankfully, the new windows have assured the elimination of leaks, water damage, unwanted wind flow, bugs, and even road noise. What a difference! A long overdue project is now finally done. Later this spring, before Easter, a recently received bequeath will have paid for the exterior painting of the rectory house. The City of Coral Gables asked that it be done as part of the permitting of the windows. Addressing long-deferred maintenance, these enhancements will have addressed the needs of the rectory house for years to come. A great Lenten season is soon to begin. Let s prepare to deepen our walk with Christ! EILLY PARISH CENTER REILLY 2711 Indian Mound Trail Coral Gables, Florida 33134 Phone: (305) 446-9950 www.cotlf.org Follow us on Facebook and Twitter! 7 TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 23, 2014 Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy. Leviticus 19:2b BETTER TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE esus words in today s Gospel continue to contrast J the Jewish law and practice with the practice of the followers of Jesus. Today s Gospel continues with slight variations the formulation: You have heard... and What I say to you is... The old laws of retaliation were once created to soften the severe and vengeful retaliations common among the peoples that surrounded the struggling people of God. The would-be followers of Jesus again feel surrounded by people bent on retaliation. So Matthew presents Jesus, who asks his followers not only not to retaliate at all but to turn the other cheek. He asks that his listeners give the one who asks more than he or she seeks. Jesus asks us to love and pray for those of our home country and the alien, the ones who love us and the ones who hate us. O There are other oils in the pantry closet, from grapeseed to safflower to canola, but only olives yield the proper meanings. Olives don t just happen; they are cultivated, nurtured, pruned, and fussed over; they are a sign of human and divine cooperation. Olives can thrive in poor soil, but they cannot survive without human ingenuity, planting shoots and pruning branches. They can t be popped from a tree and munched like apples: they are inedible without long curing; neither do they yield their oil to hand pressure alone, but only to huge stone mills. Abundant patience is needed as sediment sinks to the bottom of storage barrels and pure oil rises to the surface. Olive oil is a byproduct of peace: war keeps harvesters, planters, and pruners within city walls and turns millers into soldiers. To obtain oil from olives you need vast measures of hope, patience, faith, and ingenuity. Olive oil is a sign of God s bounty and the way we human beings collaborate with God to bring about impossibly wonderful results. It is creation at its finest. Some people give chocolate eggs for Easter; perhaps olive oil is a more appropriate gift! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. INTENCIONES DEL SANTO PADRE FRANCISCO PARA EL MES DE FEBRERO Son of God Opening Weekend Just in time for the beginning of Lent, the movie Son of God - from the same producers of the highly acclaimed mini-series, The Bible, which aired on the History Channel last year - is set to open nationwide later this week. Thanks to the generosity of an Archdiosan donor, 12,000 tickets have made available free of charge to parishes and schools throughout the Archdiocese for this opening weekend. COTLF has tickets available for a showing of Son of God on Sunday, March 2nd at 1pm in the Paragon Coconut Grove Theatre. Only a limited number of tickets are available and they will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Please contact Jorge Santibáñez at the Parish Office to get your tickets!

In the meantime, the parish is currently in search of volunteer guitarists and musicians to step forward to provide liturgical music at the Sunday night 7pm Mass. If interested, please contact the parish office for an appointment with our Music Director. And so we use that term to mean that which encourages all of us who attend the Ultreya to continue, to persevere in our Christian life as apostles for Jesus Christ. The purpose of the Ultreya is to keep the spirit and friendship of a Cursillo ongoing in order that it may be a motivating force for all of us to live the ideal and to evangelize.
