08 FOUNDATION DEGREE Supporting Young People The principal aim of this Foundation Degree is to widen access into higher education by placing value on your experience and offering you the opportunity to develop your professional understanding, knowledge and key skills. The programme normally involves attendance one day per week or an evening session with university staff. Sessions are interactive and include discussions of activities you will have carried out with young people. You will have a named personal tutor for on-going support through the programme. Who is this course suitable for? The Foundation Degree has been designed for those who are working with young people in a paid or voluntary capacity. As the programme is a work-based qualification, you need to be working with young people in order to complete your studies. This higher education programme is designed for those without traditional entry requirements, who have considerable experience of working with young people and can demonstrate the potential to work at a higher level. You will study a total of 12 modules (6 in each year): Year 1 (120 credits at Level 4): Approaches for engaging, guiding and supporting young people (1) Becoming a reflective practitioner Mentoring young people Parents, children and young people within their family context Safeguarding young people Understanding adolescent development Year 2 (120 credits at Level 5): Approaches for engaging, guiding and supporting young people (2) Education, training and work: supporting young people in transition Equality and diversity Independent study or People, organisations and networks Professional ethics and values in working with young people Youth in society Entry requirements You will normally need one A Level or equivalent (eg NVQ Level 3), plus English language at GCSE grade C (or equivalent). You should also have experience of working with young people and young people s services. Whilst on the programme you should be working with young people for a minimum of 10 hours per week (through employment or voluntary work). Arrangements for this must be in place before you start the course. If you already have HE credits you may be able to use them as exemption for up to a maximum of 60 credits at Level 4 of the Foundation Degree. 09 DEGREE Supporting Young People The BA (Hons) Supporting Young People provides the opportunity for those working with young people to develop their professional skills, knowledge and understanding whilst gaining a higher education qualification. The programme places value on your experience, whilst using a range of learning and assessment methods to develop your ability to engage in reading, critical reflection, debate and ethical enquiry. You will also develop the level of critical reasoning required to progress in your work as a professional with young people in a range of contexts. Who is this course suitable for? This programme is for those engaged in work with young people for 13 hours or more per week, who want to build on their previous learning at foundation degree level to gain a relevant honours degree in their professional field. What will I study? During this 13 month programme, you will study the following four modules: Term 1: Youth support practice Term 2: Professional identity in a multi-agency context Term 3: Ethical enquiry: research methods Term 3 and 4: Independent study (120 credits at Level 6) You will critically examine your professional knowledge and experience and will gain a greater understanding of theoretical issues affecting professional identity, the work of organisations, progression and development not only within your own specific work contexts, but also in relation to national issues in a wide range of aspects of your youth support. The Independent Study module offers the opportunity to undertake and report on a small scale research project. Entry requirements You should have completed and passed the Foundation Degree in Supporting Young People or another relevant Foundation degree, (such as Advice and Guidance or Childhood Studies), normally within five years of your application. You should have at least two years experience in working with young people and young people s services, and therefore have an understanding and working knowledge of some of the issues faced. For the duration of the programme you will need access to a minimum of 13 hours experience per week of working with young people (through paid or voluntary work). Arrangements for this experience must be in place before study commences and ideally you will have the recommendation and support of your employer/supervisor. You will need to ensure you have suitable opportunities to complete the work-based tasks. 10 DEGREE Counselling, Coaching and Mentoring This programme provides an introduction to the expanding professional disciplines of counselling, coaching and mentoring. It assists students to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to enter a number of employment sectors within the broad remit of the helping professions, as well as to continue their professional development through further study following the programme. Who is this course suitable for? The programme has been designed for students who have an interest in working with people in helping and support roles. In particular it is appropriate for anyone who is considering a career in counselling, coaching or mentoring or an allied field of practice. What will I study? If you are a full-time student you will study the following modules in years 1, 2 and 3. If you are part-time you will study three modules each year. 11 MASTERS Career Guidance (incorporating the Qualification in Career Guidance) The MA in Career Guidance (MACG) is a postgraduate programme of academic study and professional training that will prepare you for entry to the guidance profession and work in a range of settings (eg career service companies, youth guidance services, further education, higher education, adult guidance, the voluntary and independent sectors). It gives you a good grounding in research methods, which you will put into practice by undertaking a dissertation in an area of your own interest. The programme incorporates the Qualification in Career Guidance (QCG), which is a nationally recognised qualification approved by the Career Development Institute The programme provides a blend of academic study and research, professional placements and practical days at University. Who is this course suitable for? Those who are looking for their own career change and would like to work in the career guidance sector will find this programme to be the best next step in their professional development. It may be that you are already working in the sector but without the professional qualification to progress. We are happy to consider prior experience and qualifications and will guide you through the process of applying. What will I study? The programme comprises 6 modules plus a dissertation. Current taught modules required for the QCG are: Career guidance practice Career guidance theory Reflective professional development Career learning and development Equality and social justice Labour markets and partnerships Please note that the QCG is awarded following successful completion of the above modules. You will also take part in a number of Practical Skill Days which involve interview and group work practice with clients, using our counselling rooms with CCTV. 12 Learning in practice You will be able to gain a variety of relevant and useful experience whilst studying the MACG. Visits and learning placements are encouraged in a range of guidance settings, including public services, in further and higher education and in schools and other organisations. In addition you can spend some time in an organisation that works more informally with people, such as youth centres and voluntary organisations. You will be asked to organise most of your placement activity yourself with support from CCPD. Entry requirements To gain entry to the MACG you will normally have a degree in any discipline. If you are not a graduate, you will be asked to submit a piece of written work as part of the selection process. You will also be required to obtain a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) enhanced disclosure certificate by the time the programme starts. Applicants meeting the entry requirements will be interviewed and we will be looking for people who demonstrate good oral and written communication skills, the ability to analyse and evaluate, and good organisational skills. 13 MPhil/PhD Progressing to Doctorate Level The centre supports those who wish to study for an EdD or MPhil/PhD. CCPD has experienced supervisors working with a number of students who are researching in the broad area of career counselling, guidance and development. All doctoral students can access the researcher development programme provided by the Graduate School in the University and can participate in one of a number of lively research theme groups forming a unique and inclusive academic community. 16 CERTIFICATE Supervision Studies In the light of recent reports from Ofsted Inspections there is an emphasis on Leadership and Management as a core area in social work and the helping professions generally. This includes the crucial area of supervision, where many undertake the role of supervisor without having been trained or qualified in the role. This course provides an introduction to the knowledge and skills for effective supervision. This certificate focuses on the role of supervision in the helping professions (for example the supervision of counsellors, social workers, mentors, probation services staff, youth offending staff, health workers and others). The course aims to ensure that once you have successfully completed the qualification you will be capable of offering supervision within your particular organisation. It is an introductory course and does not include assessed practice in the workplace. Certificate (20 credits Level 5) Duration 4 months part-time Start date Various dates throughout the academic year Location/delivery Medway Campus (alternative locations are possible). Who is this course suitable for? The course is aimed at those providing support and supervision to their colleagues who are employed in the wider helping professions. These could include those who offer line-manager supervision or those who provide supervision to staff but are not employed in a line manager role. This could include social work practice managers, counselling supervisors, youth support managers and so on. What will I study? You will review and develop your knowledge about supervision. You will learn about the theories and concepts underpinning effective supervision practice and develop a skills base on which to frame your interventions, thus enhancing your capabilities in facilitating a supervisory relationship. Entry requirements As this is a Level 5 course, you will need to show evidence of being about to study at this level which would ordinarily require a Level 4 qualification or equivalent. You should also be a practicing supervisor. If you do not have the required entry requirements you will still be considered if you have been working in relevant employment for the past three years. 17 CERTIFICATE Understanding Careers Education and Guidance (CEG) Following the Education Act 2011, schools now have the responsibility to provide their students with impartial and independent career guidance. In response to this, schools may need to appoint new staff, or change the responsibilities of their current staff to take on a careers role; these staff will not always have a background in careers work. Who is this course suitable for? This course is designed for people who are new to a careers role and who feel they need to learn the foundations of what makes effective careers work in schools. It enables students to gain a clear understanding of providing careers education and guidance and an opportunity to explore the CEG provision in their own organisation. What will I study? The certificate includes the study of relevant terminology (e.g. information, advice, guidance, careers education), the place of careers education in the curriculum, the benefits of impartial career guidance, an introduction to how young people make their career decisions and the process and skills of the career guidance interview. Entry requirements As this is a Level 6 course, you will need to show evidence of having the potential to study at this level and would normally require a Level 5 qualification or equivalent. Those with significant relevant experience will be offered the opportunity to do a piece of pre-course writing to demonstrate their suitability for this course. 18 CERTIFICATE Career Guidance and Development This course will focus on the theoretical underpinning required by the OCR Diploma in Career Guidance and Development, as follows: career guidance theory and perspectives on client-centredness; career development theory (traditional and recent approaches); theoretical approaches to equality and diversity; theoretical models of reflective practice; labour market theory and trends. Who is this course suitable for? This course is for you if you have NVQ Level 4 and need a top-up of the theoretical aspects of guidance in order to achieve Level 6. What will I study? The course covers the theoretical underpinning of the following areas: Reflective Practice, Career Guidance and Career Development Theory, Approaches to Equality and Diversity, Labour Market Research, Trends and Theory. Certificate (20 credits Level 6) Duration 20 weeks Start date Throughout the academic year Location/delivery Online Assessment Critical reflective evaluation of a one-to-one interview with reference to theory, and a report on an area of the labour market of interest, including issues of equality and diversity. 19 CERTIFICATE Supporting and Promoting Higher Education Applications This is a stand-alone module at Level 7 that is usually delivered to a group of practitioners. It can be delivered at CCPD or at the premises of the group concerned. Who is this course suitable for? This course is specifically for you if you work with young people in 6th forms or colleges who are applying to university. It is aimed at 6th form tutors, heads of 6th forms, teachers and qualified careers advisers who want to know more about how to advise others about entry to the world of higher education. What will I study? You will study: Theoretical and sociological factors affecting HE applications Processes and procedures of HE applications Reflective practice The place of action research in the development of services. Entry requirements Applicants will usually have a first degree or Level 6 qualification but experienced practitioners without this will be offered the opportunity to do a piece of precourse writing to demonstrate their suitability for this course. During this module you will also consider the role of reflective practice and the importance of gaining knowledge and understanding of education, training and labour market information. Who is this course suitable for? This module is for you if you want to gain an insight into the theoretical concepts underpinning career guidance practice. This includes those who are undertaking the Level 6 Diploma in Career Guidance and Development in the workplace. What will I study? Who is this course suitable for? This module will suit you if you are engaged in career coaching or wish to develop this expertise. What will I study? The course will cover definitions of coaching and career coaching. It will allow participants to consider a range of models of coaching and to apply them to their own coaching practice. 24 2 OR 3 DAY COURSE FOR 6 TH FORMERS Better Decisions: Guidance for University Choice and Preparation Are you a Head of 6th Form or Head Teacher who now needs to provide impartial career guidance for their students? This could be the answer. Over two or three days this course offers a stimulating experience in a university environment and will avoid last minute and ill-considered applications. Led by impartial career professionals, participants will consider in groups all aspects of taking their next step and applying to university. The course guides sixth formers in taking a strategic approach to their university applications, making a careful selection and improving their chances of success. All students who attend the course will complete a draft of their UCAS personal statement. The third optional day includes the chance to discuss their work. Who is this course suitable for? This course has been developed for Year 12 students who are thinking about applying to university. The range of topics covered aims to equip students with relevant information to enable them to make informed decisions about their future. Through the course, students will engage in the process of preparing themselves for university study. A small sample of topics covered includes: Where do I want to study? Different kinds of universities Types of courses How to research courses What makes a good UCAS personal statement? Financial issues Getting the most from a university visit. Additional information The course will be delivered over 2 days. If assessment is requested, the preparation and support for this can be done on a third day and work will be informally assessed against the University s Level 4 criteria (first year of undergraduate study) thereby giving students their first taste of academic work at this level. A large cohort of students will be split into groups of 25-30 and taught in rotation. All sessions will be very practical and interactive with lots of opportunities for research, discussion and practical activities. Some sessions will be delivered in IT rooms.
