(Walter) Immerzeel has seventeen years experience in geo-informatics, water resource management and climate change and is skilled in hydro-meteorological monitoring, the use of remote sensing, simulation models and spatial analysis and he has been doing research on Himalayan hydrology since 2002. He holds a PhD degree in physical geography from Utrecht University and his research focused on the interface of mountain hydrology, climate change and agriculture. He also has extensive experience in the application of remote sensing and modelling in mountain areas for systematically assessing and monitoring climate change, flooding, droughts and food security. He has worked in the Netherlands as well as in numerous developing countries and he has a large international network. From December 2002 until June 2004 he was attached to the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Nepal as associate expert GIS and natural resource management. Since 2005 he has been working for the research and consulting firm FutureWater in Wageningen and he has been responsible for various applied research projects across the globe. Since 2008 he combines this position with post-doctoral research work at Utrecht University. From 2008-2011 he worked as CASIMIR fellow supported by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) and working on seasonal forecasting of Asian river discharges from the Himalayan cryosphere and monsoon feedbacks in close collaboration with Utrecht University. He currently works as assistant professor at Utrecht University and he is responsible for a number of projects on the cutting edge of climate change, glaciology and hydrology. In 2011 he was awarded a prestigious NWO-VENI grant to support his research on the impacts of climate change on the hydrology of the Himalayas and Karakoram mountain ranges.
