See yourself in their shoes. With high expectations, first-rate teachers, and world-class facilities and technology, Davenport Community Schools ensures that all students have the tools and character needed to shape the world in a positive way. Our graduates have been Pulitzer Prize winning writers, champion athletes, political figures, and CEOs of multi-national corporations. A District of Distinction Our high school students are experiencing unmatched opportunities due to the implementation of three District of Distinction models: The Accelerated Associates Degree Program at North High School (p. 6), CITI High at West High School (p. 7), and our newest distinction, the Creative Arts Academy of the Quad Cities. The Creative Arts Academy is a regionally unique magnet school for the arts, offering a rigorous curriculum that prepares students for exciting career paths in the arts. Dance, theatre, visual art, music, and communication & media arts are taught in downtown arts destinations with noted industry professionals from the area and afar. To learn more about the Creative Arts Academy of the Quad Cities, including information on how to enroll and details on the audition process, please visit: www.davenportschools.org/caa A World of Opportunities for a Wide Variety of Student Interests A small sampling of student activity and club offerings: - Mock Trial - Speech and Debate - Quad City Scholars - Anime - Sign Language - Environmental/Ecology - School Newspaper - Girls Learn International We offer 24 team sports to our students. A high level of student participation in athletics accounts for over 1800 individual experiences in a team sport each year. Full-time TAG teachers at every traditional high school foster the abilities of high-achieving students. Students can work at our state capitol via Legislative Page opportunities, the State of Iowa Youth Advisory Council, and the Iowa Jobs for America s Graduates program. A Davenport Community Schools student represented the state of Iowa at the 2013 National Student Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. Our Army and Marines JROTC programs are two of only six in the state of Iowa. Our Army JROTC received the accolade of Honor Unit with Distinction - the highest rating possible - for the 5th consecutive year. We have the strongest arts program in the Quad Cities. In 2013, our National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards medalist and National High School Honor Choir member were honored at Carnegie Hall in New York City. In 2014, North High School was invited to present at the International Thespian Festival, and the school will be presenting in 2015 as well. The Central High Blue Devil Marching Band has been selected to represent Iowa in the 2015 National Independence Day Parade in Washington D.C. 2

A District of Distinction College and Career Readiness We offer 14 advanced placement and 56 dual credit college courses at our high schools, allowing students the ability to earn college credit. In 2014, our high school students earned a total of $7,629,173 in scholarships, awards, and grants. Our very own Davenport Schools Foundation awards over $64,000 in scholarships annually. This scholarship network and other college readiness supports such as financial aid workshops ensure that our students are prepared for a journey into higher education. We were the first school district in Iowa to offer the nationally recognized ProStart culinary arts program. This curriculum prepares students for a career in culinary arts and restaurant management. A district culinary arts teacher is a recent ProStart Teacher of the Year for the state of Iowa. Davenport Community Schools has the only Project Lead the Way certified high schools in the Iowa Quad Cities. This engineering program engages students in problem-based learning activities that provide hands-on classroom experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The Combustible Lemons, one of four robotics teams at West High School, were recently recognized as a top 24 team in the world. West s EndoTherm team is one of only fifteen recipients of the 2014-2015 Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam Grant, with which students will invent a device to prevent heat stroke in children and pets. Career-technical programs such as our welding program are so advanced that students gain experience by doing real work for local companies. West High s welding students have won 6 state championships. A Cosmopolitan Environment with World-Class Facilities and Technology America s graduates are entering a world that is increasingly interconnected, and the Davenport Community Schools experience offers a unique foundation for global understanding. There are over twenty languages and over sixty dialects spoken in the homes of our families, and the cosmopolitan environment found in our schools mirrors that of the larger world. We offer a stellar World Languages curriculum that features up to 6 years of German and up to 7 years of French and Spanish, as well as Classical Language instruction that introduces Latin and Greek. Students take part in a variety of experiential learning excursions. Theatre students recently received a personalized performance workshop with the cast of Wicked on Broadway. During a trip to Chicago s Christkindlmarket, students spoke German with vendors and enjoyed authentic German cuisine. Our learning environment also features world-class facilities and technology. Over $25 million in voter approved sales tax and Physical Plant and Equipment Levy proceeds are invested annually in building enhancements, ensuring our schools are safe, accessible, and ideally suited to support student learning in the 21st century. Every high school math, science, and social studies classroom in the district has interactive whiteboards. 1600 high school classrooms were recently equipped with new Chromebooks, and 1600 more are scheduled for rollout during the 2014-15 school year. 3
