(b) To earn the advanced designation the student must complete one of the following: two additional units in a language other than English ( LOTE credits total); career and technical education (5 credit CTE sequence); or the Arts (5 credit sequence). Students who are exempt from the LOTE requirements as indicated on the IEP may earn the advanced designation as long as the required number of credits to graduate is met. (c) A total of 2 Regents examinations in science, with at least one in life science and one in physical science. (d) If so indicated on the IEP, students with a disability may be exempt from passing the Regents Comprehensive Examination in a LOTE to earn a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation. (e) Students who successfully appeal two Regents Examination scores within three points of the 65 passing score and who meet the other requirements of the appeals process specified in CR 100.5(d)(7) will earn a local diploma. (f) For students with disabilities who first enter grade 9 in September 2005 and thereafter, a score by the student of 55-6 may be considered as a passing score on any Regents Examination required for graduation with a local diploma. (i) A total of two Regents Examinations in science, with at least one in life science and at least one in physical science. (j) Students who complete Checkpoint A of the syllabus and two units of study in a language other than English no later than the end of Grade 8 must pass either the State or locally developed second language proficiency examination in order to earn one unit of credit toward the high school diploma. (k) If so indicated in the IEP, students with a disability may be excused from completing the additional LOTE units and the corresponding Regents Comprehensive Examination. Students completing a sequence of not less than 5 units of credit in CTE or the Arts are not required to complete the additional two units of LOTE or to pass either the Regents Comprehensive Examination, State approved alternative or locally developed Checkpoint B examination in that language to earn a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation. (l) Students who successfully appeal two Regents examination scores within three points of the 65 passing score and who meet the other requirements of the appeals process specified in CR 100.5(d)(7) will earn a local diploma. (m) For students with disabilities who first enter grade 9 in September 2005 and thereafter, a score by the student of 55-6 may be considered as a passing score on any Regents Examination required for graduation with a local diploma. (o) A local school district may award a student a Regents diploma with honors or a Regents diploma with advanced designation with honors to a student who achieves an average of 90 percent in all Regents examinations required for the diploma. A student may substitute no more than two department approved alternatives and still be eligible for the Honors designation. Department approved alternative assessments and locally developed Check Point B LOTE assessments shall not be included in the calculation for an Honors designation. (p) Students who first enter grade nine in September 2009 and thereafter who complete all course work and testing requirements for the Regents diploma with advanced designation, and who pass, with a score of 85 or better, three commencement level Regents examinations in mathematics and/or three commencement level Regents examinations in science, will earn a Regents diploma with advanced designation, with an annotation on the diploma that denotes mastery in mathematics and or science, as applicable. (q) A local school district may award a student a Regents diploma, or a Regents diploma with an advanced designation, with an affixed technical endorsement awarded upon completion of an approved career and technical education program (r) A student whose appeal is accepted for one required Regents examination, and who has attained a passing score of 65 or above on each of the four remaining required Regents examinations, shall earn a Regents diploma per Commissioner s Regulation 100.5(d)(7)(v) (s) For students with disabilities a score of 5-5 on a required Regents exam (except ELA and Math) can be compensated by a score of 65 or above on anther required Regents exam. In all cases, students must achieve a score of 55 or above on ELA and math. In addition the student must pass the course in which the s/he earned a score of 5-5 and have satisfactory attendance. Students utilizing this option may NOT substitute any RCT examinations for Regents examinations.
3 Newburgh Free Academy: An Overview Newburgh Free Academy is a comprehensive high school consisting of two campuses; the NFA Main Campus on Fullerton Avenue, and the NFA North Campus on Robinson Avenue. Both campuses house students in grades 9-12 and operate utilizing a house plan. A house is a smaller learning community within a school. At the NFA Main Campus there are three houses: The Academy House which has two academies: AARTS Communications The Humanities House The Liberal Arts and Applied Science House The North Campus is the fourth house of NFA. This house consists of the following academies: Important Note: At the NFA North Campus there are three academies: Health and Human Services Forensics, Security and Law Real World Science and Technology All students who attend the NFA Main Campus or the NFA North Campus are able to participate in ALL interscholastic sports, music and student activities as well as take AP and Honors courses.
4 Main Campus: Academy & House Overviews This house includes two theme based Academies. Each Academy has a focus in which teachers have created an interdisciplinary curriculum. Each Academy provides students with an opportunity for hands on instruction based on their interests and career goals. The Academies offered at NFA Main are: AARTS and Communications. AARTS Academy: The mission of the AARTS Academy is to help our students achieve high academic standards by bringing the arts to life both in the classroom and on the stage. The AARTS Academy teachers work with the students to create a small school setting and to personalize the high school experience. Students can choose to take electives in dance, drama, music, and/or technology. There are numerous opportunities for students to experience the arts through field trips, guest artists, and all aspects of performances. You don t have to be a performer to enjoy the AARTS Academy. There is something for everyone. Communication Academy: Whether they are editing a video, filming a news segment, preparing a speech, writing an editorial, designing a print ad or web page, students in the this Academy will hone their communication skills that are necessary for the technological challenges of the new century. Students are introduced to the creative as well as technical innovations of how we communicate throughout this world. A multimedia, hands on environment is provided with state-of-the-art equipment and industry standard software. Emphasis is placed on understanding and harnessing technologies and learning lifelong skills that can be used in all walks of life. This house is designed for students that are seeking a traditional high school academic program. This house provides students with the opportunity to select a course of study that is tailored to their individual interests. We take the traditional approach and give it a contemporary twist. In this house students will be encouraged to explore self-growth through service, academics, study skills and stewardship. While open to all NFA students, courses such as Debate, ROTC, Computer Assisted Design, AP Psychology, Social Psychology, ESL and AP Languages are centered in this house.
5 main campus continued Liberal Arts & Applied Science House: The Liberal Arts and Applied Sciences House, providing Career and Technical Education and Fine Arts programs, is a hands on academy at NFA. It provides students with the skills they will need while keeping a strong focus on core academic courses. Some programs also certify students for a future career. Apprenticeship opportunities for post high school educational options are made available by our local construction unions. Students seeking higher education will be able to enter college or apprenticeships with a unique edge above other students. North Campus: Academy Overviews Real World Science and Technology Academy: This academy is focused on educating and inspiring students to embrace the increasingly important world of science and technology. The curriculum is relevant, integrated, active and engaging. Classes will focus on immersion in real life, project based learning environments. The Academy will work in conjunction with Black Rock Forest, Saint Luke s Cornwall Hospital and SUNY New Paltz. This Academy offers cross curricular projects and integrated courses which are the hallmarks of all teaching and learning. Health and Human Services Academy: The mission of this academy is to provide programs that prepare students to enter the workforce and/or post secondary education as they explore human service careers. Students in this academy will concentrate their studies in one of the following areas: Health Occupations Training, Early Childhood Education or Fitness and Wellness Careers. Opportunities for students include working with toddlers in an on-site daycare or with the elderly in a nursing home. Certification as a nursing assistant is available in this Academy. Forensics, Security & Law Academy: The goal of the Forensics, Security, and Law Academy is to provide students with an understanding of the American legal system, students will be exposed to numerous criminal justice related careers, such as Forensic Scientists, Crime Scene Investigators, Criminal Attorneys and Security related careers. Students who complete the Forensics, Security and Law sequence of classes will also receive an 8 hour NYS Security Guard Certification. *Course elective availability subject to budgetary constraints or student enrollment. Located on Robinson Avenue is Newburgh Free Academy s Fourth House.
6 Excelsior Academy: Excelsior Academy at NFA is a new model for teaching and learning that brings together high school, college, and the world of work in order to prepare students for the complex and ever-changing global workforce in information technology. Students in the Excelsior Academy graduate with an associates in applied science degree from SUNY Orange, in addition to their high school diploma. They also obtain the skills and knowledge they need to continue their studies or step seamlessly into well paying, high potential jobs in the Computer Information Technology industry. Excelsior Academy s curriculum will offer project-based learning experiences and real world applications of science, technology, engineering, and math. Students will develop important academic and career skills as they learn through projects developed in collaboration with IBM. Due to the accelerated pace of learning in Excelsior Academy, the length of the school day and the school year is longer for enrolled students.
