LVHS DUAL CREDIT STUDENT/PARENT INFORMATION November 3,

What is Dual Credit? Dual Credit (DC) allows a high school student to earn college credit and high school credit concurrently. Our DC college partner is St. Philip s College (SPC) which is one of the Alamo Community Colleges. We have agreed upon a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SPC that defines our partnership with them. 2

Benefits of DC? DC courses earn both college and high school credit. Students can presently earn up to 28 hours of transferable college credits. Students experience the challenge and rigor of college course work. 3

What is the process for enrollment in DC? Signed Dual Credit Application Form; DC Program Student/Parent Consent Form; Bacterial Meningitis Waiver Form; Apply Texas Online Application; Alamo Community Colleges (ACC) GO FAARR online activity; TSI Test Prep Activity; TSI Testing; Test scores that meet eligibility requirements; Official high school transcript. 4

Apply Texas Online Application The Apply Texas Online Application must be completed prior to enrollment in DC. Apply Texas establishes Texas residency which is required for DC participation. Apply Texas is now connected to the testing required for DC admission. Apply Texas will be completed in our DC computer lab. SSN is required to complete Apply Texas. 5

Eligibility Students must demonstrate college-level ability in order to enroll DC courses. The following tests and scores are used to qualify: Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Assessment; SAT; ACT; PSAT. The ACCUPLACER and THEA tests are NO LONGER VALID tests for DC admission. 6

Eligibility: TSI TSI is an assessment that qualifies students to enroll in DC. Students are required to take a pre assessment (practice) test prior to taking the actual TSI. Students must earn qualifying scores to take courses. Test score requirements vary by course. 7

Eligibility: TSI Scores ALL DC COURSES REQUIRE QUALIFYING SCORES IN ENGLISH AND READING: English: with essay of 4+ Essay score of 5 alone Reading: MATH SCORES REQUIRED FOR PARTICULAR COURSES: Math: Minimum 343 for BIOL 1406/07 Minimum 337 for ECON 2301 Minimum 350 for PRE CAL MATH 1414/2412 8

Eligibility : PSAT PSAT (Dual Credit Only) Exemption in all areas: Combined score of 107+ English/Reading Exemption: Score of 50+ Math Exemption: Math

Eligibility Qualifying scores for courses are subject to change by SPC at any time. LVHS must follow the scores required by SPC. 11

How many courses are allowed? Students may take up to two (2) DC courses during a regular semester. No DC is offered during the summer. Course availability is determined by SPC. 12

Transfer of Credit? The acceptance of transfer DC hours is determined by the accepting college/university. Texas public colleges/universities accept DC hours. The course(s) may count as core or elective hours. Private colleges/universities may or may not accept your DC hours. You are responsible for checking with the college of your choice regarding the transfer of DC credits. Some colleges/universities allow programs within the institution to determine the acceptance of DC hours. 13

ON CAMPUS DC INSTRUCTION On campus courses are taught directly by LVHS teachers who have been approved by the Alamo Colleges Board of Trustees. Teachers receive a stipend paid by the Alamo Colleges. Advantages to On Campus Instruction: Direct contact between teacher and student daily. 23 ONLINE COURSES Online courses are taught by SPC professors who may or may not know DC students are enrolled in their courses. DC Students are college students. Online students are expected to complete and submit all assignments on time. Enrollment in online courses is encouraged for independent, mature students who can manage their time wisely. 23

ONLINE COURSES Online students deal directly with professors through online contact. Because the courses is a college course, the Family Education Right and Privacy Act (FERPA) denies parents access to student information. Note: All online students are required to print official online grades for LVHS. The official grades are required for the courses to be entered into LVHS records. 24

ONLINE COURSES For each online course a student takes, the student is assigned a course period in the Online Computer Lab. The computer lab is under the supervision of a teacher. The assigned lab period affords the student the opportunity to work on online courses. Online students must use the Online Computer Lab assignment to work on online courses. 25

DC Grades A final course grade of C or higher is required to receive high school credit in a DC course. If you earn a D, you will be dropped from the DC program and you cannot reenroll. Grades: DC College Letter Grades will be converted to the following numeric grades on the transcript: A = 95 B = 85 C = 75 D= 70 F = 50 32

DC Courses Grades: High School Weighted Courses DC courses are recorded as weighted courses to be used in calculating numeric grade average (NGA). The NGA is used to calculate class rank. Eight (8) points are added only when calculating the NGA. The 8 points will not show in the semester grade posted to the transcript. The 8 points are not included in the calculation of the college 4 point GPA system; that is based entirely on letter grades: A = 4 points; B = 3 points; C = 2 points; D = 1 point; F = 0 points. 33

Dropping DC Courses: College Consequences Changes and/or drops from college courses are penalty free only within the first 10 days of the college semester. After the first 10 days, a penalty will be reflected on the student s college transcript in the form of a W for withdrawal grade. 34

Dropping DC Courses: College Consequences Alamo Colleges publicize a specific drop-date each semester: Students may withdraw from a course during the first 10 days without any consequences. Withdrawals after the first 10 days but prior to the official drop-date will result in a withdrawal (W) on the student s college transcript. DC students will not be allowed to withdraw from a DC course after the drop-date. The student will remain enrolled and receive the grade earned. 35

Deadlines La Vernia High School follows all deadlines set by the Dean of Arts and Sciences-Interim, SPC. La Vernia High Schools sets DC deadlines to meet those set by SPC. 36

Deadlines Adhering to the deadline is critical. It ensures you enrollment in the courses you select. Online students are vying for slots in courses with all other online students to include other online DC students and all online college students. Slots in online courses fill quickly; therefore, DC packages must be submitted on time. LVHS submits all packages at one time to SPC. 37

Facts to Remember DC grades count! Grades earned in DC effect high school and college GPA. LVHS graduates can begin college on academic probation because of grades earned in DC. Academic probation will effect your ability to secure financial aid. 38

Facts to Remember SPC will only post DC hours to an SPC transcript after a student graduates from high school. LVHS will deliver all DC graduation transcripts as a group to SPC directly. Requests for SPC transcripts are handled directly between SPC and LVHS graduates. Each DC semester course in which you earn a B or better counts as one advanced measure. Your can earn one advanced measure for HIST 1301 and one advanced measure for HIST Four advanced measures are required under the DAP. 39

Facts to Remember AP courses can also earn the student college credit. College credit is determined by the score earned on the AP Exam. A score of 3 is the minimum for college credit. Contact the college/university to determine if the school accepts AP credit toward college credit and the score necessary to earn credit. 40

High School Weighted Courses DC courses are recorded as weighted courses in calculating numeric grade average (NGA). NGA is used in calculating class rank only. Eight (8) points are added to the numbers only when calculating the NGA. The 8 points will not show in the semester grade posted on the transcript. 41

COLLEGE SAVINGS!!!!!!! Currently, LVHS DC students do not pay tuition or any fees for the courses that are taken under the program. Students do pay for the text if one is required. During school year, $313,000 will be saved on tuition and fees that would regularly be charged. Currently, LVHS DC students can earn up to 28 hours of college credit during high school. Most colleges consider 30 hours as a year of college work. Our students can graduate with enough hours to have completed almost a full year of college. 42
