5 1 EIMS Portal Description EIMS Web Portal is the optimum solution that integrates all of department s front and back-office related processes to deliver real-time, accurate, on-demand information system that helps increasing the productivity, speed-up the process time in providing information efficiently and minimize the delay or manual errors. This portal has role and component based highly secured system which provides separate view for the logged in user as per their rights and privileges. It keeps information secured and provides the view on a need to know basis. 2 Basic Definitions 2.1 Web Portal A Web portal or public portal refers to a Web site or online services and web applications. Portals provide a way for enterprises and organizations to provide a consistent look and feel with access control and procedures for multiple applications and databases, which otherwise would have been different web entities at various URLs. Web portals may offer other services such as , news, information from databases etc. The features available may be restricted by an authorized and authenticated user (employee, member) or an anonymous site visitor Features of Web Portal The general concept of portals focuses on: Providing staff with a single point of access to business systems All needful Information and services Aggregating organizational information into a single location Providing staff with a single user experience that crosses information systems and technologies Tailoring (customizing or personalizing) information to the needs of individual staff (or groups of staff) Reducing (or eliminating) the need of multiple logins ) Uniform Resource Locator (URL): A Uniform Resource Locator, abbreviated URL, also known as web address, is a specific character string that constitutes a reference to a resource. In most web browsers, the URL of a web page is displayed on top inside an address bar (Ex: World Wide Web: The World Wide Web (abbreviated as WWW or W3 commonly known as the web) is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet. With a web browser, one can view web pages that may contain text, images, videos, and other multimedia and navigate between them via hyperlinks Domain name: A domain name is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or control on the Internet. Domain names are formed by the rules and procedures of the Domain Name System (DNS). Any name registered in the DNS is a domain name. 6 2.6. Hypertext Transfer Protocol: The Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is an application protocol for distributed, collaborative, hypermedia information systems. HTTP is the foundation of data communication for the World Wide Web. Hypertext is structured text that uses logical links (hyperlinks) between nodes containing text. HTTP is the protocol to exchange or transfer hypertext. Ex: HTTP Secure: Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is a communications protocol for secure communication over a computer network, with especially wide deployment on the Internet. Technically, it is not a protocol in and of itself; rather, it is the result of simply layering the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) on top of the SSL/TLS protocol, thus adding the security capabilities of SSL/TLS to standard HTTP communications. Ex: Web Browser: A web browser (commonly referred to as a browser) is a software application for retrieving, presenting and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. An information resource is identified by a Uniform Resource Identifier (URL) and may be a web page, image, video or other piece of content. Hyperlinks present in resources enable users easily to navigate their browsers to related resources Types of Web Browser: Web Browsers are software installed on your PC. To access the internet user needs internet web browsers, such as Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. On the Web, when you navigate through pages of information this is commonly known as web browsing or web surfing. 8 4 EIMS Portal Features The Key Features for the MPWRD Portal are as follows: Maintain department information and bulletin board, etc. Make available all the documents such as government orders, office orders, training literature etc. in text forms on the intranet Maintain knowledge base for WRD. Maintain links to various manuals, handbooks, rules and guidelines specific to WRD Provide all the data/information necessary to support formulation of various policies by the department from time to time and shall also help in entry of data/information regarding implementation of each policy formulated by the department in order to help understand the response and any need for change/ enhancement Provide a system for maintaining all the data/information required for carrying out long term and short-term plan, covering all aspects of operation of WRD Maintain details of Intranet policies Provide links to sites of interest for WRD officials such as CWC, PWD, enext Tenders, Ministry Of Water Resources, MP Government and other Government Portals Host EIMS modules. EIMS Portal gives search facilities for retrieval of data. On the search screen the user is required to enter key phrases to enable search.
