1 INTRODUCTION Netumo is a monitoring platform to help you monitor domain names, websites, and internet hosts from within the same console ensuring that they are always up. Netumo gives you the option to be notified immediately when something happens, thus you are alerted when your online presence is at risk or of low quality. Web hosting companies have different ways how they gauge their uptime with most state that they have 99%+. Netumo gives you the ability to really gauge this metric using its reports. This guide will guide you through the various features of Netumo helping you along the way understand them and configure them correctly. Netumo does not require installation and all the features can be accessible through a web browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 10+), Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Apple Safari. Netumo is also free and all you need is to create an account. 2 CREATING AN ACCOUNT The first step for Netumo is to create an account. You can do so by entering your preferred username. This needs to contain only letters and no spaces. The address is important as this will be where all notifications are sent. It is important that you enter a secure password which is of at least 8 characters long with some digits (or non-alphabetical symbols).
Figure 1 - Netumo Signup Please note that Netumo will send an to validate your address. You are required to click on the link within the validating authenticity and correct delivery. Failure to do so will get your account to be suspended. 2.1 ADDITIONAL SERVICES LOGIN You can also log in using either Google Accounts of Facebook. To do so click on the Facebook or Google button and allow access to your account. Once done make sure you have entered a valid address when prompted on screen. Google and Facebook login are a more secure way of how to log into Netumo. 3 ADDING A WEBSITE DOMAIN With the simple wizard you can quickly start monitoring your first domain and website. Step 1 Select Next to continue Netumo Manual 1
Figure 2 - Wizard Step 1 Step 2 Enter a friendly name for your website such as MyWebsite. Step 3 Figure 3 - Wizard Step 2 Enter the website and address such as Netumo Manual 2
Figure 4 - Wizard Step 3 Step 4 Select the notifications that you wish to get delivered, including and twitter. For twitter you need to click on the to successfully receive private twitter notifications. Figure 5 - Wizard Step 4 4 DASHBOARD The Netumo dashboard (shown in Figure 6) gives you a quick overview of the status of your domains and websites. The dashboard is divided into 4 main sections 1. Overview Here you see an overview of your domains and monitored websites/hosts. For any issues such as domains due for renewal or websites which are down correct signs are displayed. 2. Website/Host List Netumo Manual 3
This is a list of websites and/or hosts monitors that are currently being checked. You also see the last time the website was checked and the result. 3. Domain List This is the list of domains that you have monitored and their due date. 4. Latest Response time This is a graph which shows the time taken (in milliseconds) for your websites and hosts to serve the content. Lower values are preferred, since high values indicate that the site is taking longer to serve the content. Typically values should be less than 2000 ms. Netumo Manual 4
Figure 6 - Netumo Dashboard Netumo Manual 5
5 DOMAINS Netumo can monitor your domain names registered with any registrar. When any of them are due for renewal Netumo alerts you using any of the different notification mediums. A domain name typically is registered by you with a specific registrar. Netumo works with total independence from your registrar and does not contact it in any way in order to correctly identify the status of the domain. To view all your monitored domains click on the Domain menu and select Manage. Figure 7 - Manage monitored domains 5.1 ADDING A DOMAIN MONITOR To add a domain under monitoring click on the Domains menu then click Add Domain. In the screen enter the domain name, typically mydomain.com, or mydomain.co.uk. (Do not include www since this is not required and not part of the registered domain name.) You can ask Netumo to retrieve the fields automatically by clicking on Retrieve WHOIS Data. This command would query what is publicly available about the domain. If you have hidden the contact information then different data could be provided. Netumo Manual 6
It is mandatory to fill in the Registration date and Expiration Date. Figure 8 - Add Domain Monitor You can also fill in the Registrar URL, i.e. the registrar under who you registered the domain, the person who registered the domain and registrant address. Finally in the notes section you can enter any information that you wish, for personal note keeping. Once all this is done click on the Create button to create the domain monitor. 5.2 MODIFYING A DOMAIN MONITOR To modify a domain monitor you can click on the domain and the Edit domain screen appears. Here you can quickly modify the details. Netumo can automatically modify some details for you such as expiry date when it detects that a domain has been renewed. Netumo Manual 7
6 WEBSITES/HOSTS Netumo allows you to monitor websites and/or hosts and check that the returned content is correct. This ensures that they are not just responding but all systems are intact. To view websites that are monitored under Websites click on Manage. Figure 9 - Manage Website/Host Monitors In this section you can add a website monitor by clicking on the Add Website or modify any of the existing ones. 6.1 ADDING A WEBSITE MONITOR To add a website monitor is very easy. Click on the Add Monitor under Websites to get started. The Add Website/Host to monitor screen appears. Netumo Manual 8
In this screen you are required to enter the details for the monitoring. The most important pieces are: 1. A friendly name. This can be any name you give to your website. 2. The URL which is the address you use for your website. This can include the protocol such as The above are the minimum and you can click on Add Monitor for Netumo to start the monitoring of the website. Alternative details: Figure 10 - Add Website/Host Monitor 1. Group You can group your websites into different groups for easier management. You can also manage your groups by clicking on Manage Groups from the Websites menu. 2. Frequency You can specify the time that Netumo uses to check the websites/hosts. The default is 15 minutes. 3. Match code or content Netumo Manual 9
For websites or hosts you can specify if Netumo should check the returned content. This is particularly useful to detect if your site has problems and the returned content different from what you specify. It is not suggested to enter the whole HTML syntax in this section and only a part of it. The HTML code can be obtained by opening the website in your favorite browser (Internet Explorer/Chrome/Firefox/Safari) and right click on the page and select View Source. When you click on Add Netumo will verify the website and check that it s alive and correct. If not you are prompted to verify your settings Website Credentials It is possible to enter website credentials for websites which ask for http credentials. Enter the username and password in the section provided Notifications In the notifications section you can select which notifications can be enabled for this particular monitor. You can enable , twitter or SMS notifications. Notifications are only sent once every hour, when a site is down and once again when the site is back up. 7 REPORTS It is possible to generate reports for website/host monitors to give you a trend over time of the history and uptime of the service. Netumo Manual 10
Figure 11 - Netumo Reports Uptime The Uptime charts shows in a donut the percentage amount that the site was up, the timeouts encountered and any errors encountered. For optimal websites the OK percentage should be 100%. If you have timeout issues check why your website is taking too long to load. Normally timeouts are an indication that your server is over its capacity. If you see No Match values it could mean that at some point your website encountered database issues Response Times The response times chart shows the time taken for the server to respond to a request from Netumo. Response times are in milliseconds (ms) and the lower the better. Higher response times could be a Netumo Manual 11
result of the server being over its capacity, or there was a peak in traffic. Ideally response times should be less than 2000ms on average Status Codes Each web request returns a status code with ranges of 200 to be OK while other values indicate other issues. This chart below shows the majority of status codes that can be returned. Status Code Name Description 200 OK Connection is a success and content returned. 204 No Content Connection is a success but no content is returned. 300 Multiple Choices There are different choices that the client may follow. 301 Moved Permanently The URI has been moved to another resource. 307 Temporary Redirect Page has been redirected temporarily to another source. 400 Bad Request The request cannot be completed due to bad syntax 401 Unauthorized You do not have the necessary permission to access the resource. 403 Forbidden You do not have the necessary permission to access the resource. 404 Not Found Resource has not been found 405 Method Not Allowed Such a request for that resource is not allowed 500 Internal Server Error Generic error message from the server 501 Not Implemented Request method not recognized by the server 502 Bad Gateway The server acting as a gateway received an invalid response 503 Service Unavailable The server is currently unavailable 504 Gateway Timeout The server acting as a gateway received a timeout 505 HTTP Version Not Supported The server does not support the HTTP Protocol version Up or Down If you want to see which days the server had the most issues you can check this chart. The Up Down per day shows the amount of times the site was down or encountered a timeout. 7.2 ADVANCED REPORTS In the reports section Netumo offers numerous graphical reports to represent the data in different views so that you can easily spot any trends. However different users have different requirements and certain scenarios might require specific targeted reports which would not be one of the standard reports. We have thus made available the raw monitoring data, giving all users flexibility to create their own reports in Microsoft Excel or other spreadsheet software. All monitoring data is exported (and available for download) as a CSV file with the following columns: Column Name Status Date Time Description OK / Failed / Timeout Date of monitoring Time of monitoring Netumo Manual 12
Time Taken Status Code Time taken for the event to be carried out in milliseconds. (ms) HTTP Status Code returned. 8 PROFILE In the upper right section there is important profile information. 8.1 MANAGE PROFILE In the Manage menu clicking on your username brings up the Manage Profile section. In this section you can manage your details including, address, address and also phone number. Please fill in all details. Particularly important fields: The address is required for all notifications, both for domains notifications and also website/host notifications. Mobile The mobile number is required for SMS notifications. Please include your country code. Twitter username The twitter username is required for twitter notifications.
