1 VPN: Virtual Private Network - Description Marist College uses the Cisco Systems VPN Client, Version to establish a Marist College IP address for the user, regardless as to how they connect to the Internet. Sometimes you will hear this referred to as tunneling. The primary intent for this type of application is to permit a staff member to connect to specific resources on campus, which they normally use from their office behind the Marist firewall. A good example of this would be an IT staff member monitoring a server they administer from home, or a vendor remotely connecting to make adjustments to their application residing on a Marist system. This document outlines installation and setup very briefly. It consists mainly of screenshots. Installation Download the small zipped installation client to a location onto your desktop from the webpage: Then extract it [unzip it] by double-clicking on the compressed file and double-click on the setup file that WinZip or WinRar create to install it. Installation will require a reboot. NOTE: If your machine does not have a compression/decompression application like WinZip, WinRar or PKZIP you may download an evaluation version. Search for ZIP software on your favorite search engine. Although the client will run on a system with as little as 32MB.of RAM this is highly discouraged for what should be obvious reasons. Use a system with at least 64MB or more. At this time, the client has been successfully tested with dial-up MARSLIP, AOL, and MSN, Verizon DSL, Road Runner and Optimum Online. 1

3 Click Finish to complete the installation. Your machine will reboot. When back at a ready state, navigate through your Programs menu below to locate the VPN Client. 3

4 Creating a New Connection You could connect as part of a group or via an identity digital certificate. Here at Marist College we use group. When you have selected VPN Client in the above step, the following screen will display: Choose Connection Entries, New 4

5 The following screen will display: All fields will be blank. Fill them appropriately for your role. For example, give the Connection Entry a unique name, fill in an appropriate Description. In the Host field, type: v1.marist.edu Select Group Authentication In the Name field, enter the name of the IPSec group to which you belong. This entry is case-sensitive. This group name will have been issued to you by the Marist College IT Staff. In the Password field, fill in the PW given to you, TAB down to Confirm Password type it again. When complete, Click Save. You are now ready to connect. Double click this entry in the Client, you will be prompted for your individual userid and password. This is your Marist ID such as Jxex. Again, you will have received this account and password from Marist IT Staff. When you connect successfully, you will see a screen which displays the Marist Fox. Click continue to connect. When connected, you will see a lock in your system tray. This is the VPN Client. 5

6 How to get help & Troubleshooting The VPN Client comes with a context-sensitive HTML help system. You can display help in the following ways: On the Program Menu, select Start > Programs > Cisco Systems VPN Client > Help. Press F1 at any window while using the VPN Client. Select the Help button, on windows that display it. Select Help from the menu that appears when you click on the icon in the title bar. or call Marist HelpDesk at NOTE: Windows XP built-in firewall will prevent Cisco VPN client from connecting. In the event that the client cannot connect, check that you do not have it inadvertently blocked by Zone Alarm Pro or Tiny Personal Firewall or any one of the other thousand different personal firewall applications one could have. 6
