2 Saturday March 9, 2013 Fee: $70.00 Registration begins: Jan 22, 2013 Innovative Approaches to Preschool Literacy As early childhood educators, we know how important it is to help young children develop early literacy skills. We know that familiarity with print as a communication tool, interest in stories and poetry, and recognition of the relationship between letters and sounds are essential to being ready to learn to read. There is much we can do to help young children develop essential pre-literacy skills that have little to do with learning the A, B, Cs. Come to this short course to learn about phonemic awareness, an essential element in preschool literacy. You will learn how to work with children s natural tendency to PLAY with sounds and words to strengthen their reading readiness. You will learn correct pronunciation of the 44 basic phonemes in the English language. We will play games that you can use every day with young children to teach sound segmentation, sound stretching, sound matching, and sound substitution. You will leave with a full toolkit that will help you get started on building young children's phonemic awareness, an important pre-cursor to being ready to read. Presenter: Dianne Liscumb Dianne is a trained and experienced Orton Gillingham tutor working with children with dyslexia and other learning challenges. Through her work, she has learned some easy-to-use activities that give young children the language experiences necessary for learning to read when they enter the school system. Dianne firmly believes in learning through fun. Saturday March 23, 2013 Fee: $35.00 Registration begins: Jan 22, 2013 Maximum participants: 20 The Wonder of Felting: Painting with Wool Experiences with unspun sheep's wool, offer a wide range of learning possibilities for young children and Early Childhood Educators. The properties of natural wool appeal to the imagination in a vivid way. During this workshop, participants will be introduced to forms of wool fibers, experience the process of wet wool felting and explore creative ways of incorporating this oldest technique in storytelling and other areas of your program. Presenters: Ana Vojnovic ECE. ITE. SN. & Nora Mejia B.Ed. ECE. Ana is completing her BA in Early Childhood Education and has a Diploma in Fine Arts. She is a textile artist and is interested in the innovative design of Early Childhood settings as well as promoting Inquiry Based Learning. 3 Saturday April 27, 2013 Registration begins: Mar 1, 2013 Saturday May 25, 2013 Registration begins: Mar 1, 2013 Maximum participants: 50 Relationship Matters: Understanding Resistance and Defiance in Children Children are naturally inclined to resist and oppose when feeling pressed upon or controlled. Although the reaction is quite normal and even healthy in certain circumstances, its manifestations and impact can be highly disruptive and disturbing, making life difficult for parents, caregivers and teachers. Counterwill can take many forms from negativism to noncompliance depending upon the age and personality of the child. We will discuss the meaning of this deeprooted instinct as well as the dynamics that control its existence and expression. Strategies for dealing with resistance will be provided. Presenter: Deborah MacNamara, PhD Dr. Deborah MacNamara is a counsellor with a private practice in Vancouver and is on faculty at the Neufeld Institute. She works with parents, educators, child care and mental health professionals in making sense of kids from the inside out. Deborah also provides individual counselling for adolescents who are facing transition issues into adulthood. Deborah has over 20 years experience as a counsellor and teacher working in educational and community mental health settings. She writes for a number of newsletters, parenting magazines, blogs and is currently working on a book about young children with Dr. Neufeld at the Neufeld Institute. Special Brains, Special Needs What forces detract from the brain s ability to learn? Children today have challenges such as ADD, ADHD, learning delays, nutritional deficiencies, dyslexia, sleep disorders, oppositional disorders, learned helplessness and many, many more. Discover how to engage and work with children so that they can self-regulate and caregivers reduce their own stress. Gain some practical skills and strategies for helping children to succeed and be active participants in the process of learning. This practical, relevant and meaningful workshop is full of hope and optimism for the future. These strategies cost nothing, take little time to prepare and can be used at a moment s notice. If you want to help children in today s world, you need to begin with their brain. Presenter: Gary Anaka Gary is a Learning Assistance specialist with over 30 years of classroom teaching experience. He has presented professional development workshops to thousands of teachers, caregivers, parents and children all over BC since His energetic and lively sessions model meaningful and practical support for helping children to reach their potential. Gary s sessions are always filled with humour to grow the brain and optimism to support teachers, caregivers and parents to help children to become life-long learners.
