1 VOLUNTEER SERVICES DEPARTMENT ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION ASSIGNMENT TITLE Burn Center Nursing Unit Volunteer PURPOSE Volunteers work under the supervision of Burn Center Staff consisting of recreation therapists, pastoral care, nursing, OT and PT. Volunteers will assist in facilitating activities for both children and adults; activities are designed to improve the physical, emotional, social and cognitive functioning of patients and are part of individual treatment plans. Other goals may include decreased effects of isolation, increased adjustment to disability, and increased confidence. Volunteers may complement patient care; no assessments, not directly responsible for patient care. SUPERVISING PERSONNEL Director, Volunteer Services Nurse Manager or designee TRAINING and EDUCATION Must complete general orientation provided by the Department of Volunteer Services. Participate in on-the-job training provided by staff or trained volunteers. DAYS, HOURS, LOCATION Daily 8:30AM 9:00PM NC Jaycee Burn Center, 5 th Floor, Memorial Hospital ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Assist in feeding patients or encouraging them to eat as appropriate per nursing. Provide patients with recreational resources such as cards, games, reading materials. Initiate various activities, i.e. playing tapes, VCR/DVD, or video games, reading, or writing Assist with socialization of patients. Transport patients; i.e. conference rooms, family waiting area, therapies. Play with children.

2 2 Help with stocking of supplies Clean equipment, make bed rolls and other duties as requested Help with clerical and other duties as needed. PROCEDURES Sign in and out in the Volunteer Office. Volunteer picture ID badge must be worn at all times. Cranberry volunteer jacket or cranberry or blue polo shirt as appropriate should be worn even when gown or scrubs are worn. Pick up the phone outside the unit and tell then you are a volunteer. Wash hands using soap dispenser for infection control. Report to Burn Center HUC or designated staff to be checked in. Report to staff for patient updates and assignments. Tell staff when you are leaving the unit. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Must demonstrate competency in age specifics, HIPAA, and HEOSH information. Must be able to communicate with diverse population. Must be able to follow directions from staff. Understand the need for confidentiality and ability to maintain such. Knowledge of hospital layout, especially those areas that relate to needs of your unit. Must be able to walk for long distances. PERSONAL SKILLS, ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE Must be a self-starter Ability to work with detailed information and follow directions. Have a friendly, positive attitude Ability to converse in Spanish is very helpful PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting and reaching Ability to push/pull up to 25 pounds Must be able to read and speak English in simple, understandable terms Must have intact sense of sight and hearing PATIENT POPULATION SERVED Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and possesses the ability to respond to age specific issues and data reflective of the patient s status. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for the following age groups: Neonate, Infant, Child, Adolescent, Older Adult PROTECTED HEALTH INFORMATION

3 3 Will limit access to protected health information (PHI) to the information reasonably necessary to do the job. Will share information only on a need-to-know basis for work purposes. Access to verbal, written and electronic PHI for this position has been determined based on assignment responsibility. MACHINES, TOOLS and EQUIPMENT Telephone, copier, FAX, computer and required application, and wheelchairs. LENGTH OF COMMITMENT A minimum of a 2 hours shift is expected. Prefer a one year commitment. Check-in with Burn staff and ensure your badge is visible above the waist and you are wearing the approved volunteer uniform before working with any patient. 2. Always knock on the patient s door before entering. 3. Share comments, concerns and observations with any member of burn center team. The patient's nurse is always available in an emergency. 4. Check with staff before sending toys or games for patients to use in their rooms. At times volunteers may be asked to clean toys. 5. Remember and respect the patient s right to privacy. All information about patients is confidential. 6. When gathering supplies, knock before entering the hydrotherapy rooms. 7. Do not assist with dressing changes by physically touching the patient. 8. Never transport specimens. 9. Never put yourself in a situation where you would come in contact with body fluids. 10. Wear gloves as needed (per infection control policy). Wash hands between patients, when touching possibly contaminated surfaces, and after glove removal. 11. Scrubs are allowed for volunteers in the Burn Center, given the nature of the environment. Scrubs are allowed only in the center, not out of the unit, - always wear volunteer jacket and nametag - even over scrubs. 12. When holding infants/toddlers a gown must be worn. You must change gowns before holding a different child. 13. When working with patients on Isolation Precautions you must observe the designated precautions. 14. Wash hands before leaving Burn Center; and inform staff that you are leaving. 15. If you would like to extend your shift or add a shift, please check with the supervising staff for approval. You or the staff member must inform the HUC that you will work an additional shift. Volunteers may not come to the unit unless the time has been previously scheduled or they have been called in by the staff.
