1 POSITION DESCRIPTION/PERFORMANCE STANDARDS POSITION: Surgical Technologist DEPARTMENT: Surgery Position Purpose The Surgical Technologist is responsible for assisting the surgeon and/or Registered Nurse (RN) in the operating room during surgical procedures as a scrub person, surgical assistant, or auxiliary person under supervision of the RN. The surgical technologist demonstrates competence to assist RN in developing a plan of care based on age specific needs and data collected. All services are provided in a professional manner and with respect for the dignity of the patient unrestricted by consideration of social or economic status, personal attributes or nature of health problems. Adherence to policies of all regulatory bodies is expected. The surgical technologist must meet competency skills. POSITION REQUIREMENTS Education: High school graduate or hold equivalent certificate. Graduate of a Surgical Technologist program. License and/or Certificate: Certification as a Surgical Technologist in the State of Louisiana preferred. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS Position Reports To: OR Manager Interpersonal Relationships: As a representative of Park Place Surgical Hospital, all comments, attitudes and behavior have a direct effect on the facility s image and perceptions of quality service. Interaction with patients, families, physicians, co-workers, vendors, etc. must be in a manner that is friendly, supportive, courteous, respectful, cooperative and professional. The behavior should promote an atmosphere of teamwork, which is congruent with facility standards and guidelines to promote positive relations. In order to prevent fraud and abuse of Federal and/or State statues, all duties and actions will be performed within the organizational Corporate Compliance Plan and Code of Ethics. Physical Demands: Lifting equipment of various weights and sizes, positioning patient and standing for extended periods of time. Also, possibility of cuts, burns, and needle sticks, communicable diseases, exposure to radiation during fluoroscopy along with exposure to chemicals and steritants. One may be subject to unpleasant odors and sights from surgical procedure and may require the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as some tasks involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues. Good speech, hearing and sight (including clear visual acuity) and color perception are essential. 1

ACCURACY OF WORK Evaluates and obtains proper equipment and supplies for procedure/patient needs: inspects/uses electrosurgical active electrodes appropriately identifies instruments/instrument sets sets up back table correctly/passes instruments for procedure understands surgical procedure/appropriate instruments for procedure Inspects Operating Room for cleanliness, completeness and proper arrangement of furniture and equipment Accountability for competence in creating and maintaining a sterile field Functions competently in general, orthopedic, plastic, urology and gynecological cases Documents care provided utilizing approved documentation on system (signs count sheet) Ability to function in emergency case by locating emergency or specialty case supplies and equipment Understands and obtains pulled case/procedure cards in a timely and efficient manner Assists in preparing peri-operative site and always assures that the patients privacy, safety and comfort had been maintained Assumes independent ability to complete competencies Monitors and controls aspects of the environment and performs actions that demonstrate accountability 5
