2 2 The Hasso Plattner Institute Brief Introduction The Hasso Plattner Institute for Software Systems Engineering GmbH (HPI) at the University of Potsdam is Germany s university excellence center for IT Systems Engineering. HPI is financed entirely through private funds donated by its founder Prof. Hasso Plattner, who co-founded the software company SAP and is head of one of the institute s research areas. The HPI is the only university institute in Germany offering the bachelor s and master s program in IT Systems Engineering a practical and engineering-oriented study program in computer science, in which 480 students are presently enrolled. The HPI School of Design Thinking is Europe s first innovation school for university students. It is based on the Stanford model of the d.school and offers 240 places yearly for a supplementary study. There are a total of ten HPI professors and over 50 guest professors, lecturers and contracted teachers at the Institute. HPI carries out research noted for its high standard of excellence in its ten topic areas. Research work is also conducted at the Potsdam HPI Research School for PhD candidates as well as at its branches in Cape Town, Haifa and Nanjing. HPI always earns the highest positions in the CHE university ranking. Since the beginning of September 2012, HPI has offered openhpi.de, an interactive Internet educational platform. 5 5 The HPI in Potsdam: the start of a great career Some high school graduates still think computer science is mostly about programming. Many believe that programming skills are essential if you want to study computer science. While both of these assumptions are wrong, it is, of course, an advantage to gather some coding experience beforehand. Our IT Systems Engineering course, which is unique in Germany, has little to do with this stereotype. It covers much more than the solitary encoding of individual programs. In addition to the fundamentals of computer science, we teach our Bachelor and Master students to understand, develop, implement and maintain large, highly complex and networked IT systems. More than just programming skills The students on our Bachelor and Master s programs are highly talented and very dedicated. They relish intellectual challenges, enjoy mathematics, value team work, and appreciate the practical dimension of their studies. Computer science poses an unceasing challenge to those hungry for knowledge. Every day brings new problems from industry and society, which we love to solve. 7 7 The results of two-semester Bachelor project are presented once a year at the Bachelor podium Every year we select the 80 best applicants for our Bachelor program, which starts in the winter semester. There are three selection criteria: the average Abitur (school-leaving examination) grade (51 percent); the average grade (24 percent) in mathematics (weighted double), English, German and, if included, computer science; and our assessment of the letter of motivation in which students explain why they want to study IT Systems Engineering at HPI (25 percent). Postgraduates with an excellent Bachelor degree in IT Systems Engineering or a related discipline from a different university can apply for one of the places on our Master s program awarded to the top 60 candidates each year. 80 Bachelor and 60 Master s students admitted each year The HPI campus in Potsdam Babelsberg, close to Lake Griebnitzsee and the city limits of Berlin, offers study conditions that are usually only available at private educational institutes yet without any tuition fees, as founder and patron Hasso Plattner finances all of HPI s work. 8 8 Studying at HPI Team Spirit in Studies and Student Life A wide variety of opportunities for students HPI student societies give students the opportunity to take an active part in everyday life at the institute. There are plenty of team activities for students to choose from, ranging from sports, dancing, cooking, music, visual arts, merchandising, producing magazines, helping to organize parties or activities for school students, or working on IT-related topics such as websites, apps and robotics. 9 9 Good support from the first day: A three-day orientation session and a mentor for each first-year student ensure a good start at HPI HPI also arranges internships and study visits abroad. Students can develop interdisciplinary soft skills in special, clearly structured classes. With people from more than a dozen nations working together under one roof, intercultural communication is a part of everyday life here. Projects with practical relevance Teams of six to eight students, working independently on their Bachelor projects in their fifth and sixth semesters, develop innovative IT solutions for real-life problems from industry and society. Our project partners are renowned companies and institutions from all over Germany. The students present their results to the public at the annual Bachelorpodium and are prepared for the event by professional trainers and the institute s PR officers. 11 11 Research and teaching closely intertwined Research plays a prominent role at HPI alongside the Bachelor and Master s programs in IT Systems Engineering. The latest findings are continuously integrated into the curricula so that students can benefit. This is one of the reasons why HPI is consistently ranked as having one of the best IT faculties in the German-speaking countries by the German higher education ranking system CHE. Research findings are immediately incorporated into teaching Our Ph.D. programs are a good example of the successful research endeavors at HPI. We offer these programs in each research area and, since 2005, in our multi-disciplinary Service-Oriented Systems Engineering Research School, which is modeled on the Research Training Groups run by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The HPI Research School offers places to exceptionally talented postgraduate and postdoctoral students. The students are supervised jointly by all HPI professors and work on service-oriented systems engineering from the vantage point of their respective specializations. Since the winter semester , HPI also offers a Ph.D. Track, a Master s program designed to lead up to a Ph.D. degree for particularly gifted Bachelor graduates. Ph.D. programs in the Research School The HPI Research School also operates three locations abroad. So far there is one in South Africa (University of Cape Town), one in Israel (Technion, Haifa), and another in China (Nanjing University). They all aim to maintain close and fruitful academic relations with young IT scholars, based on the model of the Research School in Potsdam. In a joint program with Stanford University, we ask why the innovative design thinking method is so successful and what conditions it needs to flourish. HPI cooperates closely with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the field of supply chain management. The institute also has close contact with other universities, primarily in China, the U.S., Scandinavia and Luxembourg. Highest quality of research at the Future SOC Lab Since 2010, HPI has also operated the cutting-edge research laboratory for service computing, the HPI Future SOC Lab. The HPI Future SOC Lab is also open to interested researchers from other universities all over the world. Using the latest hardware and newly developed software provided by partners from the IT industry, the lab provides a realistic environment for the testing of new approaches based on highly parallel computing, on-demand computing methods, and innovative memory organization and access concepts. 13 13 Cutting-edge technology at the Future SOC Lab One such new approach is the full exploitation of the potential offered by the latest multi-core computer architectures. Researchers here are also experimenting with virtualization techniques (methods for the integration or segmentation of computer resources) and cloud computing (which enables users to draw on processing power from external data processing centers accessible via the Internet). Making better use of tomorrow s hardware Researchers have access to up-to-the-minute, actual data provided by large corporations, a resource unmatched anywhere else in the world. At the HPI lab, research is being conducted into how new architectures can be used to process huge amounts of corporate data at previously unparalleled speeds with virtually no time delay. 14 14 Promoting Innovation at HPI Design Thinking: Creative Lateral Thinking in Mixed Teams Rapid visualization of ideas: A design thinking principle Innovations must be user-centered Mindset, method, process there have been many attempts to explain what design thinking is. But as the search for holistic, user-oriented solutions reveals the problem-solving potential of cross-linked thinking and acting in everyday life, we see that design thinking is actually much more it is a living culture of innovation. At the Hasso Plattner Institute, prospective IT engineers and students from other study fields can learn all about how this method works in detail. Schools of innovation in Potsdam and Palo Alto Design thinking is taught at the HPI School of Design Thinking in Potsdam and the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford University. Researchers from Stanford University and HPI also investigate the method in a joint program. It was Prof. Hasso Plattner who initiated the creation of both innovative facilities, and he sponsors them generously.

15 15 Creative ideas are developed in multi-disciplinary teams Using the design thinking method, small teams of four or six students from various subject areas are able to come up with better and more practical solutions than individual experts or singlediscipline groups ever could, in areas such as labor market issues, encouraging people to save energy at home, or introducing new purchasing possibilities for food retailers. Creative advantage for multi-disciplinary teams The supplementary training in creative lateral thinking extends over one or two semesters and involves two days attendance per week. It is intended for students from different disciplines who are nearing the completion of their studies. The course begins with a D-camp to familiarize students with the method. After that, participants are taught how to apply design thinking using multiple projects focusing on increasingly complex problems. These real-life projects come from partners in industry, politics and society. The chalk and talk teaching method is unknown at the HPI School of Design Thinking. Instead, small student teams from very different fields, each supervised by several coaches, learn to work together through mutual exchange and interaction. Additional training for students from all areas of study Instead of a lecture hall there are learning spaces furnished with movable red sofas and colorful seating cubes. The creative process is traced visibly and tangibly using hundreds of neon sticky notes, sketches, lists on mobile display panels, and prototype designs for new ideas. The teaching staff is made up of professors and assistants from various universities, and the language of instruction is English. 16 16 Cooperation at HPI A Close-knit Network of Key Contacts Open to new partners The Hasso Plattner Institute has established close ties with partners from the fields of education, academia, business, public administration and healthcare. This network is always open to new partners with a view to enhancing the benefits for research and teaching. Projects with ICT companies HPI professors work on exciting, application-oriented research projects in collaboration with renowned international companies such as Microsoft, IBM, Siemens, SAP and Deutsche Telekom, as well as with public institutions and SME partners. This intensive exchange between researchers frequently stimulates new developments in IT Systems Engineering. The IPv6 Council: Working on the Next Generation Internet In the German IPv6 Council, we are committed to helping introduce quickly and comprehensively the data traffic regulations for the Next Generation Internet here in Germany that have already been implemented abroad. We constantly contribute our expertise to the German government s IT Summit process. Under the umbrella of our Youth Academy, we offer customized events for school students who would like information on our IT Systems Engineering programs or who have a general interest in mathematics and information technology. For example, HPI runs a Youth College for school students in grades 7 through 12 who, in addition to their normal studies, are also interested in regularly participating in exciting IT tasks. 18 18 HPI s founder Exceptional and Exemplary Commitment Patron and HPI Professor in one HPI, founded in 1998, is a unique institute in Germany. Affiliated with the University of Potsdam, HPI is, however, completely funded by a private donor: Professor Hasso Plattner co-founder, former CEO and supervisory board chairman at global software company SAP. A dynamic patron dedicated to science and academia, Plattner holds the Enterprise Platform and Integration Concepts chair, regularly gives seminars, and actively advances research and development at HPI. Findings in Plattner s area of expertise are paving the way for highspeed databases, which help large corporations and institutions carry out flexible analyses of huge amounts of data in a matter of seconds rather than days, as was previously the case. 19 19 The award-winning founder of HPI on campus Plattner has received numerous awards for his entrepreneurial and academic merits. In addition to the non-profit Hasso Plattner Foundation for Software Systems Engineering, as the sponsor and sole shareholder of HPI he has set up another charitable foundation, the Hasso Plattner Förderstiftung. This foundation supports projects beyond the realm of science and academia, such as the fight against AIDS and projects for disadvantaged children and teenagers both in South Africa. Plattner s foundation is also involved in cultural projects and the conservation of historical buildings and monuments. It provided funding, for example, for the reconstruction of the historical façade and copper roof of Potsdam s City Palace. Since January 2014, this building has housed the Brandenburg state parliament. These graduates are highly sought-after as junior executives. 22 22 HPI Graduates An HPI Degree: Your Ticket to a Great Career A practice-oriented study program and work on excellent research enable a smooth career start HR managers regard an HPI degree as a mark of quality. An HPI education has helped many of our alumni to find a friend for life, and the HPI seal of quality is a ticket to outstanding career opportunities. A great number of graduates have their employment contracts secured before they complete their degree; others need to make just a few applications before they are swiftly accepted into a new job. A number of HPI graduates go on to be successful founders and managers of start-up companies. A female IT specialist in Silicon Valley Example 1: Dr. Anja Bog. She was one of the first women to graduate from HPI with a Ph.D. Since early 2013, the IT specialist from Saxony-Anhalt has been working in the SAP labs in Silicon Valley. Her focus is on the development of innovative applications to improve healthcare through personalized medicine. The analysis of genome data plays an important role in her job. Bog and her team aim to help scientists in university hospitals or at pharmaceutical companies identify the links between a person s medical condition and his/her DNA. This should mean that patients receive faster and more targeted treatment with fewer side effects. Bog hopes to improve the tools used to analyze the data. Engineer at Facebook Example 2: Jonas Gebhardt. Following his Master s degree, Gebhardt started working as a front-end engineer at Facebook in California. In Menlo Park, he primarily works on web products of Instagram, a platform that allows users to upload photos and videos and to edit them using different filters, and to finally post them via the Instagram network. Gebhardt is tasked with developing and optimizing products in close collaboration with a handful of engineers and designers. He also works with Facebook s user interface specialists to develop components for shared use that improve user experience.

After completing his Bachelor s degree at HPI, Schmidt- Bielicke moved to Munich to work for automotive manufacturer BMW. At subsidiary BMW M GmbH, he is responsible for designing the electrics and electronics features of the company s especially sporty M cars. His scope of responsibility encompasses all systems, from engine control to driving dynamics control and infotainment. Schmidt-Bielicke provides the framework for functional and software development and ensures that the complexity of the so-called E/E systems is manageable. Working in a multi-project environment, he has to take individual project demands and building-block objectives into account. Software architect at BMW Example 4: Marvin Killing and Christian Reß. The two HPI Master s degree graduates founded PlaytestCloud GmbH ( while they were still studying. Their online platform helps companies in the booming mobiles games sector to design their products to be more customer-oriented and user-friendly. The concept behind the startup came about as a result of a business plan competition initiated by the Hasso Plattner Institute and Hasso Plattner Ventures in 2012, which Killing and Reß won. 26 26 Studying and Working in Potsdam HPI: Connecting Two Capitals Benefit from the advantages of two capitals The HPI campus in Potsdam s Babelsberg district is right on Berlin s city limits. HPI therefore connects the Brandenburg state capital with Germany s capital city, which together form one of Europe s largest and most diverse centers of science and research. HPI staff and students can benefit from all the advantages offered by the two cities as well as the beautiful surrounding scenery.
