2 BACKGROUND: The Academic College of Tel Aviv-Yafo MTA The Academic College of Tel Aviv-Yafo (MTA) was founded seventeen years ago by the Municipality of Tel Aviv-Yafo, Tel Aviv University and the Israel Council of Higher Education (CHE) as an independent public college financed by student tuition and government subsidies. MTA's 3,800 students study in four undergraduate schools (Computer Sciences, Management and Economics, Behavioral Sciences, Government and Society) and two graduate programs (Computer Sciences and Psychology). Students in these programs have consistently demonstrated a high standard of academic excellence in relation to graduates of other programs from comparable institutions of higher learning in Israel. Alongside its academic commitments, MTA goes to great lengths to use its resources and know-how as levers for social and educational change in Yafo and the culturally diverse neighborhoods of south Tel Aviv. Operating eight large-scape community outreach programs that address the needs of more than 1,500 elementary and high-school students, MTA is making great strides towards building a strong, lasting bond with the community that surrounds it. The School of Management and Economics MTA's School of Management and Economics is one of Israel's foremost educators in the field of economics and business management. Since its establishment in 1994, the School has earned a reputation of excellence, renowned for its active engagement with the business community and its hands-on, practice-focused curriculum.

Dean Israel (Izzi) Borovitz: Professor Emeritus of Computers and IT Systems at Tel Aviv University and former Chairman of El-Al Israel Airline and CEO of Kenafayim Ltd., Israel Borovitz is an outstanding scholar who combines diverse academic know-how with extensive business and managerial experience. StartHub Program for Professional Entrepreneurship A Local Program for Ventures with Global Reach StartHub operates an intensive 24-week non-degree program for inventors and entrepreneurs of all ages, cultures, religious backgrounds; and from various walks of life who share two main qualities: a desire to transform ideas into successful businesses and the lack of experience and know-how to do so. A unique curriculum that combines individual mentoring with lectures by some of Israel's most prominent businessmen and entrepreneurs, StartHub ensures an educational experience complete with brainstorming and interaction with key members of Israel s business community. The StartHub accelerator for entrepreneurs has demonstrated a significant success rate with over 80% of participants graduating from the program; of those, 95% have active startup ventures functioning 6 months later.

4 Participants of the StartHub program gain valuable connections to fellow entrepreneurs and mentors who are able to assist them with idea generating and inspiration, access resources they would otherwise not be able to receive, obtain 1 on 1 mentorships, attend numerous lectures each week on every aspect of business development including legal and accounting services, marketing, financing, and opportunities to pitch their venture to angel investors and venture capitalists. The StartHub Center is located on the upper floor of MTA's School of Management and Economics and is set apart from other teaching areas to provide an effective collaborative workspace for participants. It is stylishly furnished and equipped with everything from individual work stations for the startups to conference rooms, broadband Wi-Fi internet, presentation facilities and a fully-stocked kitchen. Each term, the facility will house 18 startups, serving 72 entrepreneurs throughout the course of the year. The goal of the program is to increase and expand opportunities available to early stage startups and provide the support they need to make an impact in Israel and globally. 5 The establishment of an Academic College campus in Yafo is the pinnacle of the projects that the Municipality of Tel Aviv-Yafo is undertaking to improve a longneglected area of the city. I have always believed that the best investment in the future was in education; and higher education is the surest vehicle for social and economic mobility. Further, I am convinced that by the establishment of an academic institution in one of the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in the city and country, we are providing an incentive to local residents, many of whom are talented but have not had the opportunity to study. I am personally committed, as are all members of my administration, to see this vision become a reality. The construction of the new campus continues. Yet much effort and many resources are still required to complete the project.
