2 Theme Negotiating adolescence is a challenge for any young person but it is particularly difficult for looked after and adopted young people and care leavers, including those on remand. Although these vulnerable young people experience a wide range of health inequalities, and high levels of mental and emotional health difficulties, professionals may find it difficult to engage with them to address difficulties with school, relationships, sexual health, bullying, including through cyber-space, selfharming and other challenging behaviours, and to safeguard them from child sexual exploitation. This fascinating conference will consider the evidence base and assist health, social care and education professionals to understand these issues and risks, and how to approach them. The themes of engagement, health promotion, building resilience and developing skills for the adult world, all of which are required to promote health in the broadest sense, are considered throughout the conference. This conference contributes to the following competencies described in the 2008 BAAF Job Descriptions and Competencies for Medical Advisers in Adoption and Fostering: A 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, B 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 12, E 1, 2, Aims to explore ways to engage with looked after young people who can be difficult to reach to appreciate the range of challenges to mental health and well-being in today s world, and consider various interventions to highlight recent research on child sexual exploitation and service responses to it to consider ways to prepare adolescents and support care leavers in the transition to adulthood to examine the health needs of young people on remand to learn about innovative approaches to service development and interventions Who should attend Agency medical advisers, named and designated doctors and nurses, GPs, health visitors, school nurses, midwives and specialist nurses for looked after children, health professionals for disabled children, designated heads and teachers for looked after children, social workers, children s guardians, adoption and fostering panel members, independent reviewing officers, mental health workers, psychiatrists and psychologists working with looked after and adopted children.
