2 BILLINGS WEST HIGH SCHOOL 2201 St. Johns Avenue Billings, MT (406) STUDENT REGISTRATION GUIDE SCHOOL YEAR REGISTRATION INFORMATION Each year it is important for you to reflect on your academic accomplishments and plan for the coming year. Plan seriously. Choosing courses is one way of saying who you are and where you are going. It is the general practice of Billings High Schools to allow students who meet enrollment standards to enroll in the courses and programs of their choice. You will register for courses once a year. Each fall you will be informed of the curriculum offerings for the coming year. At this time you will be advised and assisted by your counselors and teachers in completing your course selections for the coming year. Time for selection and possible revision of course selections will be provided but all course decisions will be final as of an announced date usually about May 1. It is from your course selections that the final determination for the number of sections per subject and district requirements for the hiring of teachers is made. 3 DEFINITIONS OF TERMS USED IN THIS GUIDE Credit: In the high school years, grades nine through twelve, a unit of credit (one credit) is awarded for the successful completion of the work of any class meeting one full period per school day for an entire school year. A course meeting one full period per school day for one semester is worth.5 (one-half) credit. A Required Course: A required course is one which must be successfully completed before graduation. Extra-Curricular Activity: Any student activity offered outside the regular school curriculum but sponsored and supervised by the high school is an extra-curricular activity. No credit is granted for extra-curricular activities. Pupil Load: All students will be enrolled in six periods of approved scheduling. In addition, each student must be enrolled in a minimum of five credit-bearing classes. Prerequisite: A prerequisite is a requirement that must be fulfilled before a particular course may be taken usually the completion of a more basic course. Some courses have prerequisites; some do not. Enriched (Honors): An enriched course is one that follows the Billings Public Schools curriculum at an accelerated or enriched pace. Students must meet established criteria prior to enrollment (standardize test scores, middle school grades, etc.) Please see your current math, science or English instructor if you are interested. Testing generally requires scores above the 90 th percentile. Valedictorian Criteria In order for a student to be considered for Valedictorian status, a student must receive.5 credit each of the 8 semesters of high school in an enriched program (Honors)
4 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS To graduate from a Billings public high school, a student: 1. Shall have earned in four years of high school, the following required fourteen and one half (14 ½) credits plus an additional six and one half (6 ½) elective credits: 4 credits in English 2 credits in Mathematics 1 credit in World History 1 credit in American History ½ credit in American Government and ½ credit in a Senior Social Studies course 2 credits in Science (1 Biological and 1 Physical) 1 ½ credits in Physical Education and Health (1½ years) 1 credit in Visual or Performing Arts 1 credit in Practical Arts 2. Shall have earned a minimum of (21) credits in grades nine through twelve. 3. Shall have been in attendance in grades 9-12 in an accredited junior and/or senior high school for no fewer than 8 semesters. NOTES: a. A student complying with the above meets the graduation requirements of the Montana State Board of Education. b. A senior transfer student who does not desire a Billings public high school diploma should, at the time of enrollment, make arrangements with the principal for the eventual transfer of credits earned in Billings to the school from which the student does desire to graduate. c. Not more than one semester of attendance or two (2) credits earned through approved correspondence or extension courses from accredited institutions may be applied toward graduation from a Billings public high school. (This exception to rule (3) must have the PRIOR APPROVAL OF THE PRINCIPAL.) d. The following courses will meet the definition of Practical Arts: Business Career Center Computer Apps Construction 1 & 2 Accounting 1,2,3,4 Mechanics 1 & 2 Personal Finance Environmental Studies Desktop Publishing Interior Design Advanced Computer Apps Horticulture Managerial Science Technical Geometry/Geometry in Construction Marketing Engineering Design Electronics 1 & 2 Café Protégé Computer Manufacturing 1 & 2 Computer Language 1,2,3 Home Improvement Tech Lab Urban Ag/Botany Medical Careers (.5 credit) English Biomedical Science Westward Animation Lab Kodiak Web Page CNC Machining Family & Consumer Sciences Culinary Essentials Textiles 1,2,3 Family Life Consumer Housing Culinary 1 & 2 Single Survival Industrial Arts Tech Ed 1, 2 Woodshop 1,2,3,4 Drafting 1,2,3,4 f. A student who drops a course after the seventh week of any semester will receive a failing grade in that course. CLASS ASSIGNMENT: Class assignment and advancement is dependent upon credits earned and years in attendance: Freshman Sophomore Junior Senior fewer than 5 credits 5 or more credits 10 or more credits 14 or more credits -5-
