4 Why POLAND? Photo: PAP l Poland is a fascinating country that serves as the geographical and cultural crossroad of Eastern and Western Europe. Located at the center of the Northern European plain, Poland has been a nation of survivors since the foundation of the first Polish state more than 1000 years ago. Through its turbulent history its people have managed to maintain their identity and today the country enjoys a crucial position as the largest of the former Eastern European states and one of the most populous members of the European Union. l Poland is a member of the European Union. It joined the Schengen Area in As a result passport checks are abolished on Poland s borders to Germany, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Lithuania. It practically means that people admitted to the Schengen Area can travel hassle-free between 24 countries of the Schengen Area without internal land and sea border controls, from Portugal to Poland and from Greece to Finland. Krakow the city of the oldest Polish HEI, Jagiellonian University l Thanks to its location, Poland occupies a special place in the European Union. Poland s border on the Bug river became the EU s eastern border. In the wider geographical and geopolitical sense Poland occupies a central position. More and more foreign investment from Western Europe is to be shifted to Poland, as well as from the US and Asia. Poland s geographic location facilitates logistics activities and forecasts indicate an increase in the number of immigrants to the country. l Polish institutions of higher education participate in international student exchange programmes and engage in bilateral agreements and individual exchange programmes pursued by particular schools. All of these initiatives enhance the development of relationships between Polish and foreign institutions of higher education. The 2 Study in Poland

Warsaw University is ranked first in the Top Coder international IT ranking, it outperformed such great institutions as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A representative of Poland also leads the Top Coder individual ranking. l Polish universities offer high quality studies and are an integral part of the European education space. 10 Akademia Wychowania Fizycznego i Sportu im. Jędrzeja Śniadeckiego University of Physical Education and Sport in Gdańsk Address: ul. Kazimierza Górskiego Gdańsk Phone: [email protected] University of Physical Education and Sport in Gdańsk The history of the Academy officially commences on 1st September 1952 when the Technical School of Physical Education was founded and started to operate in Gdańsk. However, the breakthrough year for the Academy, was 1958 when the Technical School of Physical Education was transferred to a new location at Wiejska Street in Gdańsk Oliwa. In the following year, the Technical School was transformed location into The Teachers School of Physical Education and in 1969 became the University School of Physical Education. The major didactic aims of the Teacher s School were to prepare qualified Physical Education teachers (PE teachers) and to familiarize the students and the graduates with various organizational forms of sport in schools and extra-school environment. The year 1962 opened the access to studies for working teachers who had secondary education. In this period, the sport and didactic premises were enriched with a six-lane swimming pool, three sport halls, a pitch with a 400- metre six-lane track, six small pitches and two tennis courts. In the same year, the Centre for Olympic Training was opened, which at that time effectively contributed to development of sport life in Tri-city. The University School provided education for PE teachers for primary, secondary, vocational schools, PE instructors, recreation instructors and sport managers to satisfy the needs of the wider extra-school circles. The University School was also responsible for academic research in the fields of sport and recreation. The academic year 1973/1974 was of prior importance for the University School. At this time the educational and academic research as well as organizational standards allowed the School to obtain and officially bear the name of one of the most distinguished Enlightment scholars, Jędrzej Śniadecki. The patron of the school laid the foundations of the physical education process in his work On Physical Education of Children. In the year 1981, the School obtained the status of academy. In consequence, Jędrzej Śniadecki University School of Physical Education changed its name into Jędrzej Śniadecki Academy of Physical Education in Gdańsk. The following years abounded in constant organizational, academic and didactic development of the Academy. The breakthrough years in this decade were: 1992 when the Academy obtained the right to confer the title of PhD of Sport Sciences, and 1999 since when the Academy obtained the right to confer habilitation title in the field of Sport Sciences. The above events, in particular the latter one, have moved the Academy to a university level. All these developments supported by new academics who have been acquired from other universities allowed to broaden the didactic offer and to open three new courses of: Physical Education, Public Health and Tourism and Recreation. Following the provisions of the Higher Education Act of 5 December 2001, the School obtained the official name of Jędrzej Śniadecki Academy of Physical Education and Sport in Gdańsk. Today the School has the academic staff of 188 academics, including 47 professors and 80 doctors, who conduct lectures, tutorials, workshops and seminars. More than 4200 students attend the full-time, non-full-time, extramural and evening courses, both BA and MA studies. The Academy also offers postgraduate courses. In 2007, Sport and Physiotherapy studies were opened. These developments have effectively enriched the didactic offer of the Academy. Our students can also enjoy multiple opportunities to improve their qualifications, master their skills, receive appropriate training in the fields of physical education, sport and/or recreation and obtain various certificates in the area of physical education, sport, tourism and recreation. The Academy additionally provides other forms of supporting careers, for example, complimentary courses for recreation therapists and tour guides, in order to meet the demand. Today the Academy is under the process of restructuring and is working on new development strategy. l BSc Physical Education l wychowanie fizyczne Physical Education l sport Sport l fizjoterapia Physiotherapy l turystyka i rekreacja Tourism and Recreation Facts & fi gu res: Established in 1969 l 188 academic staff l 3149 students l located in the centre of Gdansk l 103 Olympic Games participants (athletes and coaches) l 22 Olympic medals ( ) Contact: Student Recruitment Office: ul. 34 Pultusk Academy of Humanities About School. Great works are often inspired by a human dream. Such was, as quite a number of the founders declare, the origin of Pultusk Academy of Humanities (formerly: Pultusk School of Humanities), a school for higher education opened in a small town, actively pursuing its statutory activity and providing its students with quality education. The ATENA Academic Education and Research Society, the founding body of Pultusk School of Humanities, by making its successful attempt at turning that idea into reality, over 10 years ago, made it possible for lots of young people to obtain higher education. The history of Pultusk Academy of Humanities is a continuation of the history of Pultusk School of Humanities established on 14th July, That was when the Minister of National Education entered the School into the national Register of Higher Education Schools. It was also then that the School was authorized to run undergraduate-level courses in the following fields of study: Polish Language and Literature, History, Education Studies. A year later (on 28th April, 1995) the Minister of National Education authorized Pultusk School of Humanities to launch courses in some other fields of study as well, i.e. in Administration, Political Science, and Environmental Protection. On 30th September, 1996, the Minister of Education, under a resolution passed by the Main Council for Higher Education dated 18th September, 1996, authorized the School to run graduate degree programs. The meaningful high-standards education delivered at the School, the educational efforts of all its lecturers, and the eagerness of its students were rewarded on 26th March, 2001, when the Central Commission for Academic Titles and Degrees, after seeking an advisory opinion of the Main Council for Higher Education, authorized the School s Faculty of History to confer doctoral degrees in History. On 22nd April, 2002, similar authorization was granted to the Faculty of Political Science. Moreover, under the Decision of the Minister of National Education and Sport of 17th November, 2003, the School was permitted to conduct undergraduatelevel courses of study in yet another field: Tourism and Recreation. On 2nd July, 2004, the Minister of Education authorized Pultusk School of Humanities to run undergraduate-level courses of study in the field of Sociology. Consequently, the School is currently able to provide higher education in seven fields of study. On 22nd March, 2002, Pultusk School of Humanities was Akademia Humanistyczna im. Aleksandra Gieysztora w Pułtusku Pultusk Academy of Humanities address: ul. Daszyńskiego Pułtusk, Poland phone: fax: [email protected] named after Aleksander Gieysztor (Wyższa Szkoła Humanistyczna im. Aleksandra Gieysztora w Pułtusku), an outstanding and world famous historian, co-founder of the School and its ex-lecturer of a long standing. The School was also a dream that had come true to its more than thirty thousand alumni equipped with knowledge and competence acquired under the guidance of the School Faculty made up of more than a thousand members, including outstanding scholars. All this has been achieved within as little time as one decade only. Ten years have been enough time for the School to arrange for its own educational facilities, including the impressive Central Library named after Andrzej Bartnicki, the First Rector of Pultusk School of Humanities. The Academy of Humanities Central Library was founded in Its contemporary building which has all the essential amenities expected of a modern library, comprises a total of 2000 square meters of floor space, opened its doors in the academic year Under Decision of the Minister of Science and Higher Education dated 19th September, 2006, Pultusk School of Humanities has been renamed Pultusk Academy of Humanities, AH. l administracja Administration l bezpieczeństwo narodowe National Security l filologia polska Polish Language and Literature l historia History l pedagogika Education Studies l politologia Political Studies l socjologia Sociology l turystyka i rekreacja Tourism and Recreation Facts & fi gu res: Founded in 1994 l 156 academic staff l students (75% women) l 262 doctoral students l 34 foreign students Contact: Bureau for Regional and International Cooperation l ul.
