2 INTERSESSION SECHEDULE
3 MIDDLE SCHOOL EXPERIENCES 6th GRADE Epicenter: Hike to the epicenter of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake to see the source of such destructive power. Mix in fun games, activities and maybe even some hot chocolate at the end for a great day outside. (Billings and Hose) Exploratorium: Spend a day at one of the most innovative and fun science centers in the world. Build on your STEAM tinkering skills at their tinkering studio and expand your scientific knowledge by playing with the many hands-on exhibits (Kenyton, Christopher) Monterey Bay Aquarium: Engage in the Aquarium s hands on Stingers to Spines lesson in their Discovery Lab followed by an opportunity to explore the aquarium. (Hernandez, Douglas) 7th GRADE Año Nuevo Elephant seal: Observe the behavior of Elephant seals at the largest colony of Elephant seals in the Northern Hemisphere at the peak of their mating season. (Hernandez, Douglas) 8th GRADE San Jose Tech Museum: Discover the science and engineering behind Roller Coasters. Explore kinetic and potential energy, friction, and the engineering process by designing your own rides. (Tropp, Seales) Indoor Skydiving: learn about the physics of skydiving and take flight the Bay Area s only indoor skydiving center- ifly (Tropp, Hose)
4 9th & 10th GRADE EXPERIENCES Coastal cabins (overnight) Get outside and come visit the Vida Verde site in the gorgeous San Gregorio valley. This trip will offer a variety of experiences including: hiking, beach going, environmental learning, campfires, yoga, campcraft, tea-drinking crunchy fun and bonding. (Hanson, Myers, Pattison, Poirot) 18 students max Marine Sciences in Monterey Want to get outdoors for fun activities while learning about the local marine environment and the organisms that live there? Join the marine science excursion on a kayak tour of Elkhorn Slough, a trip to a local marine research center, and an afternoon at the beach where we will experience the amazing diversity that the Monterey Bay has to offer. Must be able to swim. (Kirlin, Binnert) 13 students max Culinary arts and farm tours Our culinary arts and farm tour will include an opportunity for students to place their hands in the soil, work with seeds, understand the origins and life cycle of food, and engage the concept of slow food and sustainability. You will learn how to prepare delicious, nourishing meals to care for yourself, others, and the environment. This two-day experience will give us an opportunity to engage as a community and practice the Art of Living Well in a Place. (Overstreet, Lecocq) 18 students max
5 Music in the Mountains (overnight) Two days of singing, playing, and sharing our love for music. What we do will depend on participants interests, but the experience may include: Songwriting and parody writing Campfire sing-along Barbershop tags Chant workshop Jam session or small bands Drum circle Circle singing We ll organize a talent show at the end of the trip, where individuals and groups can perform a tune practiced during the two days. (Elizai, Lewis, Johnson) 18 students max SF Murals and Mexican History Spend the day in San Francisco learning about murals and help create a mural for Kirby. Day 1: We will cover the history of murals, the contemporary mural movement in San Francisco, and the mural painting process. We will also visit the Mexican and Latino Art Museum. Day 2: Work together to create a mural at Kirby. (Terrell, Soetaert, Martinez) 13 students max Green Screen Acting and Theater Come have a fun experience learning about film acting and using a green screen in the process. Film acting is very different than stage, so come get advice and learn the subtleties of film versus stage acting. You will also get to learn more about the camera work and filming side of the process. (Taylor, Karter) 13 students max **All experiences are free unless a price is specifically listed
6 11th & 12th GRADE EXPERIENCES Tech Tours Come join in a unique opportunity where you will have a chance to learn about technology from the business and maker perspectives. We will spend a day visiting various sites in Silicon valley and the second day in a builder lab taking on a project of your choosing. (Perkins, Lucas, Zinman) 16 students max Engineering and Chemistry Join us in two fabulous one-day field trips that include meeting a panel of UCSC professors and working in a university-quality chemistry lab. In the second field trip we will tour the internationally recognized Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories. LLNL manages the world s fastest computer and houses the world's most powerful laser. The National Ignition Facility. NIF successfully achieved fusion ignition, is able to reach temperatures of 100,000,000 Celsius and pressures of 15,000,000 atmospheres! (Jackson, Malek, Landaverry) 15 students max Project X Day One: a series of experiences and experiments designed to shake up the way you look at your surroundings and your community. We will go to some classic and unexpected sites nearby. Day Two: produce a project, designed with the rest of the group, that reacts to what you ve experienced on Day One. This day will be almost entirely designed by you and your fellow students and will result in a shareable public product. (Olsen, Campbell) 20 students max
7 The Mindfulness Package: Silence is Golden This retreat is designed to help students escape the stress of flashing phone screens and looming college deadlines. We will leave technology and work/school demands behind, and venture into the world. On Day 1, we will hike, meditate, and practice yoga in silence. On Day 2, we will break our silence to spend a day gardening by the ocean at The Homeless Garden Project and/or gathering refuse at a local beach. (Reid, Kirk) 12 students max Bay Area College Tours Take a college tour at a few local colleges UC Berkeley, University of San Francisco, Santa Clara and Mills (depending on interest). Tours and info sessions usually begin at 10 am and 2 pm, so it will be a full day. (Brooks, Bensley) 18 students max Solo Quest: Death Valley (overnight) A five day personal exploration to Death Valley. This experience will include a 1 day/1 night solo that individuals may use as an opportunity mark their transition into adulthood. This unique experience will provide students with a chance for great personal growth through connection with the natural environment, the support of peers, and the solo experience. This event will include primitive camping and each individual will need basic camping equipment. There will be multiple group meetings leading up to the event, including one meeting on Tues Jan 12th. We will depart after school on Wed Jan 13th and return on the evening of Sunday Jan 17. (Billings, Schindler, Lee, and outside leader) 8 students max Must submit a 1 page (min) statement about why you would like to participate or why now is the right time. **All experiences are free unless a price is specifically listed
