1 Math 046 Online Course Syllabus Elementary Algebra and Geometry THIS IS AN 8 WEEK CLASS Carol Murphy, Professor CRN # Online office hours: Tuesdays from 8 9 pm Office Phone: Fall Other online Office hours will be announced later Cell Phone in case of emergency: Please through WebCT only COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES COURSE DESCRIPTION Prerequisite: Mathematics 35 which has been changed to MATH 38 with a grade of C or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Level M30. Advisory: English 50 and 55 with a grade of C or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Level W4 and R4. Elementary Algebra serves as the foundation for other math courses and is the first of a two semester integrated sequence in algebra and geometry. This course covers the real number system; the writing, simplifying, solving and graphing of linear equations and inequalities; operations with polynomial functions; solving systems of equations and their applications; and the properties of lines, angles and triangles. This course satisfies the AA requirement, (FT) This course has its final in a proctored environment. You can either take it on one of the scheduled times below or find a qualified proctor to proctor your final. I have attached the proctor form as a link on our MATH 46 HOMEPAGE. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. Apply the order of operations in simplifications 2. Translate verbal expressions into algebraic expressions, and simplify them 3. Apply properties of equality to solve linear and absolute value equations and related application problems 4. Solve linear inequalities in one variable

2 5. Identify functions, use appropriate function notation, determine the domain and range of functions from their formulas and graphs, and apply the algebra of functions 6. Identify the properties of a linear equation in two variables including the slope and intercepts, determine the different forms of the equation of a line, and graph lines 7. Solve systems of linear equations in two variables 8. Perform basic arithmetic operations with polynomials 9. Factor polynomial expressions using a variety of methods and solve polynomial equations by factoring 10. Perform arithmetic operations involving rational expressions and solve rational equations 11. Identify important geometric shapes and properties involving lines, angles, and polygons 12. Tussy and R. David Gustafson, Thomson/ Brooks Cole, ISBN X A graphing calculator is useful but not a necessity for Math 95. This text may be ordered through the Online Bookstore or if you are on campus, you may purchase your textbook directly from the San Diego Miramar College Bookstore. If you purchase your text through another vendor, you will need to purchase an access card to work on the tutorial that is used with this course. You must have an access card to work in WebAssign. Either the access card will come with your text or you will have to purchase an access code through WebAssign.. Purchase your access card as soon as you can so you can start using the WebAssign tutorial through the link. The link is also found on our Math 46 home page. The class key for WebAssign for Elementary Algebra CRN is: miramar The 2 math Homework assignments per chapter and 1 test per chapter will only be found on the WebAssign Website. You must log onto this site and do your work there to get credit for that portion of the course. Buy your book as soon as possible to avoid falling behind in the course material.
