1 1314 Online College Algebra Course Description Burrus 1 This is not a self-paced course. Over the course of the semester, you will study linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, radical, absolute value, logarithmic, and exponential functions and their graphs; characteristics of other basic functions, graphing techniques, and operations on functions; systems of equations; and matrices. This is material that will provide a firm foundation for a variety of future courses as well as teach you critical thinking and processing skills. Our purpose is to help make you successful in all degree fields! Requirements for this class Access to a computer with high speed internet on a regular basis Firefox and Chrome are the recommended browsers for proper functionality of MyLabsPlus. Use of Explorer is not recommended, MLP will not display properly. Ability to use that computer to access web-based content Access to your Weatherford College student account All Exams will be administered at the Weatherford College Testing Center or preapproved Testing Center at a community college or university near you. Testing hours can be found on the WC website or Moodle. Textbooks/Course Material Option 1:Highly Recommended: College Algebra, 11th Ed., Lial, Hornsby, Schneider, and Daniels, Pearson-Addison-Wesley, 2013; and bundled with MyLabsPlus Access Code Option 2: Stand-alone Student MLP Access Code (does contain the companion e- text) Basic Scientific Calculator (non-graphing calculator) is required for some objectives of the course. Calculators that have excessive text and storage capabilities are not allowed; this includes the graphing calculators. The textbook bundled with plus access code can be purchased from the WC bookstore. This bundle is specific to Weatherford College and has special pricing. The stand-alone access code can be purchased from the WC bookstore or purchased on the MyLabsPlus
2 Burrus 2 site once the term starts. A basic scientific calculator is needed for a couple of sections from chapters three and four. Otherwise no calculator will be used. ***Important Note: Remember that technology/internet use can be interrupted at times. Access to a paper copy of the text is recommended. Learning and practice can continue if technology issues arise. Purchasing the bundle containing the code and textbook from the WC bookstore is HIGHLY recommended. The cost for the bundle is usually much less expensive than purchasing book and code separately. This course has two major components Moodle, where you are now, provides the weekly structure of the course. It contains initial information, weekly scheduling, printable notes, audio lectures, forums, grades and a link to the MyLabsPlus site. Moodle should always be the first link to the course. MyLabsPlus contains all homework, quizzes, and tests as well as additional resources found in the Multimedia Library such as the e-text, power points, section videos, etc. prepared by Pearson. The official Weatherford College MyLabsPlus site is Audio Lectures and Printable Companion Notes Audio lectures consist of examples that would be worked in a classroom setting. My voice is sync d with the writing. You may to download these audio lectures to your computer or tablet. This will allow the file to open properly and the audio to function without the constraints of your Internet browsers. However, if downloading the files is not an option, please use the following steps to disable the default PDF viewers for each of the recommended browsers. You will only need to disable the default viewers onetime unless you update your browser during the course of the semester. If your browser updates, then you may need to repeat these instructions. Companion printable notes can be accessed as well. These will enhance the audio lectures. Disabling the Default PDF Viewer for Internet Browsers
3 Burrus 3 FIREFOX: If you are using the Firefox browser, then please go to this website to disable built-in PDF viewer so that you can use Adobe Acrobat PDF reader. CHROME: If you are using the Chrome browser, please type chrome://plugins/ into your browser and disable the Chrome PDF viewer. Live Webcasts I will conduct the live webcasts twice a week using Big Blue Button. Big Blue Button is a function found in Moodle. Times are to be determined. Webcasts will provide opportunities for students to ask me questions about homework assignments. These sessions are recorded for future reference. Java (the latest version) is a free download and is required for the webcasts. Download it. Java is not part of the Browser Check in MyLabsPlus. Homework Homework is assigned in MyLabsPlus. This is your first stop for completing your homework AFTER you have read the corresponding section in the text and watched the pencasts (located in Moodle). There are due dates but do not get behind and wait until the last minute to complete it. There are no homework extensions. Homework assignment questions are set to unlimited, so you can keep trying questions with different numbers. MASTERY ASSIGNMENTS are also found in the list of homework questions. These assignments are set to three tries per question. Quizzes Quizzes are also found in the homework list of MyLabsPlus. Quizzes are set so that three attempts per quiz is allowed. The MLP Gradebook will take the best of three scores per quiz. These quizzes will be part of your overall homework grade for the course. Testing Three unit exams (online) for this course and a final exam (online) will be administered. The unit exams are found in the homework list of the MATH1314 course. The Final Exam is found the MMT1314 section of MyLabsPlus. All exams will be proctored in a preapproved Testing Center. Proctoring is free of charge if you use a WC testing site. Other sites must be pre-approved by me and students are responsible for testing fees.
4 Burrus 4 Grades Grades are calculated according to the Course Master Syllabus. Late assignments will not be accepted. There are not assignment extensions. Students must adhere to all due dates and dead lines. 15% Homework/Quizzes 65% Major Exams 20% Final Exam In the event that a unit exam is missed, a grade of zero will be recorded. This will be the lowest major exam score and will be replaced with the final exam score. In the event that two or more major exams are missed, a grade of zero will be recorded for each additionally missed major exam. There will be no final exam score replacement for these additionally missed major exams. I replace your lowest major exam score with the final exam score. I also drop three homework assignments, with the exception of the Mastery Assignments, and two quizzes at the end of the semester. There is no extra credit. Communication Check your WC daily. This is our primary means of communication. When ing me always include the course in which you are enrolled. Posts from our Announcement Forum and Class Question Forum which are found in Moodle will also send and to your WC account. Check the forums daily. WC Technical Support The WC Technical Support can assist with Moodle, Campus Connect, WC , and help you make sure your settings are correct for MyLabsPlus. The number is We also have Tech Stop located in the WC Library. They can offer help as well. Pearson Technical Support for MyLabsPlus For Technical support assistance, you can speak with a technician 24x7 by calling: or selecting the Support tab on the MyLabsPlus website. 5 Burrus 5 Clearing Browser History Clear your browser history and cache often. This is necessary if MyLabsPlus fails to open. It is advisable to have both Firefox and Chrome installed on your computer. Sometimes when one browser fails the other will work. Academic Honesty Weatherford College expects its students to maintain complete honesty and integrity in their academic pursuits. Cheating, facilitating cheating, or any other violation commensurate with the Academic Integrity Policy will result in disciplinary action, including a grade of 0% for a graded activity. Additionally any electronic device that is visible during a quiz or test will result in a grade of 0% for that assignment. This score of 0% will not be replaced with the Final Exam score. Incidences will be handled according to the Weatherford College Student Handbook. How to Get Started... And Crucial Tips 1. Remember that this is not a self-paced course.
