1 Math 120: Fundamentals of College Math Mathematics and Statistics Department, University of Nevada, Reno Section 1001, TuTh 2:30-3:45pm, FH 106 Section 1002, TuTh 1:00-2:15pm, FH 207 Fall 2014 INSTRUCTOR INFORMATION Instructor: Adrienne Petersen Office: DMS 233 Office Hours: TuTh 11am-1pm by appointment REQUIRED MATERIALS Textbook: Fundamentals of College Mathematics: Custom Edition for UNR (Also available online at Calculator: Scientific or graphing calculator required STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES 1) Upon completion of this course, students will be able to formulate and use mathematical models to analyze real-world situations. 2) Upon completion of this course, students will be able to determine and implement an appropriate method of solution for financial problems. 3) Upon completion of this course, students will be able to solve basic probability problems. COURSE DESCRIPTION Set operations, probability, statistics, consumer mathematics, linear, exponential and logarithmic functions with emphasis on problem solving and applications. Math 120 is a core mathematics course intended for students who wish to major in a non-quantitative discipline. Math 120 is not a preparatory course for Math 126 or for any other mathematics or statistics course on UNR campus. To review or prepare for 126 you should enroll in Math 096. Any course that lists Math 120 as a prerequisite accepts a higher level math or stats course in its place. Credit may not be received for MATH 120 if credit has already been awarded for Math 126 or above. Math is a two semester alternative to Math 120 for students with disabilities. PREREQUISITE One of the following: ACT 22, SAT 500, Math 096 C/S, Accuplacer EA 80 and CLM 55 GRADING Your course grade will be determined by the following: Homework 20% Exams 60% Final Exam 20%
2 The grading scale will be as follows: A % C % A % C % B % D % B % D % B % D % C % F % No rounding up will be done, no exceptions. You need at least a D to pass this class and earn core math credit. HOMEWORK All homework assignments are to be completed on Due dates will be posted online and will typically be midnight on the day after lecture. It is your responsibility to keep up with the homework and due dates. You may work on your homework after the due date with a 50% penalty until midnight of the night before the next exam. You are allowed to work on homework with your classmates, a tutor, or in the math center. Getting help on homework is encouraged and is not considered cheating. All students must register for this course online by going to and following the instructions. You will need a valid address, course ID (The course ID for this class is petersen23573) and student access code (comes with textbook or is purchased online) to register. All students must register by Friday, August 29. If you need assistance registering, please call tech support at EXAMS There will be 5 exams and a comprehensive final exam. Please see the class schedule below for exam dates. All tests will be 100% multiple choice. Calculators will be allowed on all exams. You may use 1 page (front and back) of formulas for all exams. You must have your UNR ID with you for all tests. If you are late to an exam 10% will be deducted from your overall score. Any student participating in official school activities that will interfere with tests must make arrangements with me two weeks prior to the test that will be missed. Any student requiring accommodations through the DRC must schedule their exams on the same day as the in class exam. No early or late exams will be given. Your lowest test score (excluding the final) will be dropped at the end of the course. If you have a documented medical emergency, family emergency, travel plans, etc on the day of a test you can take the missed test as your drop.
