1 Carolinas College of Health Sciences General Education MAT : COLLEGE MATH (ONLINE) Mymathlab course ID: mbayabu21347 Course Syllabus Fall 2015 Course: College Mathematics Instructor: Matamba Mbayabu Credit Hours: 3.0 Office: Room 260 Course Time: Online with optional meetings on Fridays at 3:00 4:20 Prerequisites: High School Mathematics Phone: Course Description: A fundamental college-level math course that includes the following interesting topics: Inductive and deductive reasoning, mathematical models, problem solving, number theory, rational and irrational numbers, fractions, decimals, simple equations, proportions, direct and inverse variation, scientific notation, percent, linear equations, regression, graphing, measurement systems and conversions, area, perimeter, circumference and volume, & probability theory. Emphasis is given order of magnitude estimating and the use of mental cross-checking to insure accuracy of calculations. Developing good study skills, mastery and proficiency with the content via online homework, as well as facility with using the graphing calculator and computer, are objectives of this course. Required Text: Blitzer, Thinking Mathematically, 6 th Ed., Pearson. You must purchase a mymathlab code in order to have access to both the text and online homework assignments. [see Page 7 for details] Recommended Calculator: TI-83 series or TI-84 General Education Goals: After completing General Education Courses at Carolinas College of Health Sciences, students will demonstrate the ability to: - communicate effectively, either in written or oral format. - understand the fundamental concepts and applications of the natural and life sciences. - analyze and understand the influence of different environmental, social and cultural contexts in shaping human thought and behavior. - think critically, apply abstract concepts, and draw conclusions from course concepts. Course Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the student should:

2 1) Have become literate in the terminology of basic mathematics, using terms such as proportional, percentage, linear, area, volume, positive and negative, numerator and denominator, micro, milli, kilo, etc., in their proper context and with facility. 2) Be able to use metric and U.S. customary units in reasonable estimations and accurate calculations involving physical quantities. 3) Demonstrate proficiency with the basic tools, techniques, and procedures through which calculations are made and simple equations are solved to determine the value of unknown quantities. To a large extent, this will be accomplished through the solution of a large number of practice exercises found in the required texts and/or provided by the instructor. 4) Demonstrate an overall understanding of essential mathematical concepts. Course Expectations and Philosophy: Part of your career competency is the responsible handling of numerical calculations. Regardless of your current interest or skill level, clearly written answers and efficient reasoning processes are absolutely necessary for your success. Therefore, the cultivation of a constructive and cooperative attitude toward the subject matter, fellow classmates, and the instructor, as evidenced by regular attendance and consistent effort with homework assignments is an expectation of this course. Caring, commitment, teamwork and integrity are more than nice words surrounding a logo! Online Course: This course is an online course using the Moodle online learning platform. A general college orientation to this learning platform is available in addition to the course specific orientation on the first day of class. You will be required to access the internet as well as software programs including but limited to Microsoft word, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and Windows Media Player. Should you be unable to access these software applications from your home, you may use the Computer Resources lab at the college to complete assignments. The Moodle online learning site is Evaluation Methods: There will be four regular tests of equal weight. No test grades will be dropped but the final exam will replace the lowest test score if it's higher. If you miss any test, then you must take the final exam. A mandatory course Pretest is given on the first day of class and Post-test at the end of the course to assess your content knowledge and growth. The final examination counts 25% of the total grade. Note: If a student s overall test average is a 92%, or if every test is a 90% or above, then that student may be excused from the final exam, provided all assignments have been submitted and no tests have been missed. Grading Scale: Grading Components: A = Written Homework: 25% B = Tests (total of 4) 50% C = Final Exam 25% D = Total 100% F = x <

3 Course Evaluations: Near the conclusion of this course, students will have the opportunity to evaluate the course and instructor by completing evaluations available online through Moodle. Evaluations are completed anonymously. The primary goal of this process is improvement of instruction. To this end, evaluations are available to the instructor only after grades have been submitted for the class. The course evaluation must be completed to receive credit for this course. The instructor will receive notification that students have completed course evaluations. If you do not complete the course evaluation by the last day of classes, you will receive an "I" or an incomplete grade for the semester because you have not completed all of the course requirements. See the CCHS Catalog/Student handbook regarding policies and procedures for the conversion of I grades. Course Policies: Exam Grading Policy: Failure to follow instructions may affect how the scanning machine reads and records answers. Scores are determined solely by the marks read by the scanning equipment. Therefore, with the exception of hand-written short answer and essay questions, answers written on the exam will not be graded. Errors in bubbling the exam score sheet will not be reversed. Once exams are available for review, students have one week to dispute any exam questions. No exam question(s) can be disputed once a week has lapsed. The faculty decision regarding the dispute will be returned to the student within five (5) additional business days and the decision will be final. Make-up Policy: In general, exams and/or course assignments should be made up within five (5) business days of the original exam date. Attendance: 2 consecutive weeks of absences may result in dismissal from the course. Honor Code: Academic integrity is a key value of a credible academic community. All college employees and students are expected to honor this value and protect the reputation of the college s intellectual community. All work created for the college by members of its community must be completed by the individual to whom the work was assigned without unauthorized assistance of any kind. Violations of academic integrity include, but are not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, self-plagiarism/multiple submission, falsification/fabrication, complicity, interference, or facilitating such activities. Failure to comply with academic integrity standards may result in actions up to and including dismissal from the college. The college s academic integrity policy is available in the college s policies and procedures accessible through the college s information portal, from the provost, deans and directors of the individual academic programs and administrative departments, and is summarized in the college s personnel handbook and college catalog and student handbook. 3

4 Plagiarism Detection: Carolinas College currently holds a licensing agreement for use of a plagiarism detection and prevention tool that is an electronic web-based service. The tool helps users detect and prevent plagiarism from sites and full-text published internet sources. As your faculty member for this course, I may use the tool to either require you to submit your written assignments electronically for review of your own work or I may submit text from your assignments. Additionally, the AHEC digital library, can be accessed 24/7. Please call Learning Technology Specialist at for updated hours of operation. Student Support: Tutoring and additional support resources are available through the Student Success Center in Room 213. Contact the Student Success Coordinator at with any questions. Students who are making unsatisfactory academic progress in courses will receive a Midterm grade of a D or F and should consider seeking assistance. In addition, students can withdraw from a course before 75% of the semester has elapsed (November 13, 2015) and receive a grade of either WP or WF, depending on their progress in the course as of the last day of attendance. Failing to withdraw from a course prior to the withdrawal deadline results in a grade of F. Student absence from class does not constitute an official withdrawal. 4

8 CAROLINAS COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES MAT : College Math It is expected that all students promote amongst themselves the highest standards of ethical conduct. Students are expected to demonstrate honesty and integrity in both the classroom and clinical setting. Each student is responsible for maintaining, upholding, and promoting honesty, trust and respect for self and others. The honor code serves as the basis for student behavior and places responsibility for abiding by the code on the student. Violation of the honor code will subject a student to disciplinary action, up to and including administrative dismissal without eligibility to be readmitted. Any person who has reasonable cause to suspect a student of violation of the honor code should report the relevant facts to the dean of student affairs and enrollment management. Honor Code violations include the following: A. Academic dishonesty includes the following actions and behaviors: a. Cheating Offering, providing or accepting unauthorized support or assistance in completion of any task, project, academic assignment, or test. The use or attempted use of any unauthorized information, material, or assistance in completing any assigned task, project, assignment, or test. b. Plagiarism Representing the ideas, language, or created work of another person or persons as one s own or as the college s own. (See Academic Integrity policy for specific definition and examples). This includes violation of copyright law. c. Self Plagiarism/Multiple Submission Copying portions of any original assignment for credit and submitting them as original work in more than one course without prior approval of the course instructor and/or duplicating submission of a prior original work without proper citation and reference of that prior work. d. Falsification/Fabrication Falsifying information for any reason or fabricating information, grade, data, citation, or reference or in completion of any project or academic assignment. Falsification or fraudulent alteration of academic or college records, including application for admission. e. Complicity Collaborating in or facilitating any of the above actions or assisting in the creation of a paper, project or other creative work that another person then presents as his or her own project, assignment or test. f. Interference Intentional interference with or alteration or destruction of another person s project, assignment, or examination. B. Clinical dishonesty includes the following actions and behaviors: a. Having another person perform one s assignments without instructor permission. b. Collaborating with others on assignments if contrary to stated rules. c. Falsifying patient records or communicating false information about clinical care or clinical experiences. d.
