Each girl is encouraged to develop her potential in a caring Christian environment by fostering her pursuit of personal and academic excellence. 3 3 A Christian School: value added education WELCOME to our 13th NSW edition of the annual publication, Which Christian School. Since our first edition, we have seen a significant increase in the number of students attending private schools including Christian Schools. In fact, of all non-government or Independent Schools as they are known, 85% have a religious affiliation. Why this growth? Enrolments in Christian schools continue to grow as an educational alternative that places the education of our young people firmly within a framework of meaning and purpose that reflects the spiritual values of parents. This guide focuses on the non- Catholic sector because they fall outside of our current distribution channel. It features schools which wish to be identified as providing education based on Christian teaching and values. These schools have responded to our request for their free listing as a Christian school. They are listed alphabetically to simplify your search. Some 50 schools have taken space to show you more of their specific features. We have listed the appropriate page number where you will see their advertisement. These schools are also listed on our website All schools listed in this free guide are committed to providing excellence in educating your child in a positive and caring Christian environment. The goal is to equip them to become well integrated as adults to take their place in an ever changing world. Finally, we wish to thank Dr Geoff Newcombe, Executive Director of the Association of Independent Schools of NSW, the Association of Independent Schools of Qld and Linda Vining for their articles. Tom Glynn Publisher, Which Christian Guides PS. Please be sure to use the front panel on this Guide to direct it to the attention of other appropriate people and to file it for future reference. 5 5 Dr Geoff Newcombe Executive Director, The Association of Independent Schools of NSW Why a Christian School? IT is telling that in this day and age, the strongest growth across all schooling in Australia is occurring in independent schools. As around 85% of all independent schools are faith-based, and Australia is a predominantly Christian nation, it is therefore no great surprise to find that much of the growth in the sector in recent years has been among Christian schools, representing many different Christian denominations. Why the influx to such schools? An oft-repeated answer in surveys of parents as to why they chose a particular independent school for their child is that the school's values and ethos accords with their own. Clearly, the strong emphasis within Christian schools on compassion, assisting those less fortunate, tolerance and acceptance of difference, and celebrating the diversity and common ground between us rather than highlighting difference, strikes a popular chord with Australian families. Values It is also interesting to note that many of the parents who choose a Christian faith-based school for their children are not necessarily of the same denomination or faith as the school. It is not unusual for a Christian school to enrol students from Islamic or Jewish families, or those who don't hold any specific religious beliefs. It is the universally held common values of these schools, along with the pastoral care programs and, often, the sense of community and identity that is developed and encouraged, that are also central to their popularity. The right to choose the type of education your child receives is something that, in Australia, we often take for granted. However, despite our good fortune and the excellent quality of our education system overall, there continue to be many who oppose the mere existence of independent schools often on the spurious grounds that they are divisive to the community or that they foster inequality in our society. Perform Clearly, this could not be further from the truth. Independent schools and their communities, Christian and non-christian, perform wonderful work in their own and increasingly other communities even in other countries. They encourage and promote unity and cooperation. We must continue to support the right of all Australians to choose the type of education that best suits our children. This means that faithbased schools remain an important and critical part of our society and we should exercise that freedom of choice. I trust that this Guide will assist you in making the choice that best suits your child's needs and helps to fulfil his or her potential in life.
6 6 Choosing an Independent School CHOOSING the right school for your child can be a challenging task. A clear sense of the kind of school and education you are seeking will make the process easier. Schools will have information they can send to you, e.g. curriculum, fees, ethos. A visit to the school can also help. Schools will welcome your visit. Some initial questions to consider when choosing the school/s may be: 1 Is it important that the school is single sex or co-educational? 2 Is the size of the school important? 3 Do you want a primary school, a secondary school, or a combined primary and secondary school? Does the school have boarding facilities? 4 What are the school values? Is it important that the school has a particular religious affiliation or educational philosophy? 5 Is it important that the school is close to where you live? Is transport available? Is out of school hours care and vacation care available? 6 What fee levels are you prepared to pay? What are the arrangements for paying fees? 7 Are there particular school subjects which are essential, such as access to study of a specific language? Enrolling your child, however young, establishes a partnership between the parents and the school. 7 7 Having made a shortlist of possible schools, here are some other questions to assist you in making a decision. This is not an exclusive list and there are no right or wrong answers. Different schools operate from different philosophical bases and it is important to choose the school that best meets the needs of you and your child. 1. How does the school challenge and extend students of all abilities? What does the school offer that makes it unique? 2. What structures are in place to ensure a caring and nurturing environment in the school? Is counselling available? 3. How available to parents are teachers? Heads of Schools? The Principal? 4. How often does the school communicate with parents? What form does the communication take? 5. What is the staff:student ratio? What is the average class size? What is the access to computer facilities? 6. How are student study habits encouraged? 7. Does the school have a comprehensive curriculum? How does the curriculum meet the needs of your child? 8. How does the school provide support for students with specific learning, language and/or cultural needs? 9. What are the school s reporting and assessment procedures? 10. How does the school measure its academic performance? How does the school report to parents about the National Assessment data for literacy and numeracy? What were the Year 12 results for the last 2-3 years? Are these readily available? 11. Does the school have a homework policy? At what year level do examinations start? 12. How is career advice given? Is there a readily accessible careers counsellor? 13. What are the main post-school destinations of students from the school, such as tertiary study, training and/or employment? 14. What co-curricular activities are offered such as sport, music and camps? Is there an additional charge for such activities? 15. What national competitions do students participate in? What community events do the school and students participate in? 16. Does the school seem to be proud of all its students? Are diverse student achievements celebrated in school publications and events? 17. What orientation procedures are there for new students and parents? 18. What policies and procedures are in place to ensure the safety of your child, such as child protection, harassment and bullying? Organising a visit to the school/s may help in assessing some of these aspects. Visiting is best done during school hours as it enables you to obtain a sense of the school tone and the relationships within the school community. 1. Is the school welcoming? 2. Do the students seem happy? Are they welcoming to visitors? 3. Is there a sense of pride in the school maintenance? Are the grounds well cared for? 4. What facilities are there? Are they in use? 5. What is the level of supervision during recreation times such as recess and lunch? 6. How do the students relate to each other? How do they relate to staff? 7. Do the staff relate well to each other?
8 8 Contents Are you a resilient parent? Dr Linda Vining is the director of the Education Expo - AT school, teachers put in a lot of effort into developing resilience in students. But parents need to be resilient too. Resilience is the ability to weather storms and bounce back from life's challenges. Resilience is largely a learned set of skills, so it follows that parents who display resilient behaviour can create a family environment that fosters resilience in their children. Here are ways you can become a more resilient parent. 1. Emotional regulation Resilient parents see joy and humour in life. Sure, even resilient people experience negative emotions - sadness, anxiety, frustration and anger, but they express their emotions without hurting others and they do not use language that stings and ridicules. For example, a resilient parent will say, I feel very upset by this situation, rather than You make me so angry. 2. Impulse control Parents want it done NOW; children want it done later, maybe. A resilient parent is patient and does not make instant demands or hasty decisions. They like time to consider the upside and downside of a decision by saying, Let me think about it for a while. Resilient parents stay cool in tense situations. They forgive easily because they know it is not productive to harbour anger, resentfulness and revenge. They accept imperfections in others and are slow to criticise. 3. Problem solving Resilient parents look for the cause of a problem and then calmly think their way through it. They carefully consider how best to apply their limited resources to finding a solution. They work through issues and aim to maintain good relationships. They may not be able to make the problem go way, but they can find ways to live with it, work around it or manage the pain. 4. Realistic optimism Realistic parents have a sense of mastery because their view of life is realistic and so they have achieved positive outcomes before. But beware: optimism in the extreme can be a drain on resilience. People whose optimism runs beyond the bounds of reality tend to underestimate risk and may be blind to serious problems and fail to take appropriate action where hardship and uncertainty exist. 5. Empathy Resilient parents talk less and listen more. They ask questions to gauge how other family members feel. They make time for togetherness to enjoy their child's company and learn about their goals and interests. They don't overuse the word NO. Instead they try to say YES most times, and encourage exploration and independence. A checklist... Do you... Act, not react Work through problems Communicate positive andnegative emotions Keep cool in tense situations Say YES more often than NO Look for the joy and humour in life
