2 Executive Officers Report 26 years ago on the 28 September 1988 the Christian Schools Sports Association was formed and became an incorporated body. Many of our founding Principals have retired in the past few years leaving the responsibility of upholding & maintaining their vision to foster Christian thought and practice through sporting events within and between schools with you and me. Many outside the Associations may ask Why have a Christian Sports Association? The motto of Covenant Christian School is "All Knowledge through Christ". They state:..the Christian believes that there are no neutral facts, that everything is related to God and has significance beyond this life.... Christian education involves every subject of knowledge..... Christian education requires a Christian point of view for the whole curriculum; a God-centred program in every department... A Christian School seeks to be Christian every hour of the school day. As sports teachers and coaches we have a unique relationship with our students. We have the opportunity to share our faith with them and show them what it means to be a Christian both on and off the sporting field. By doing this we are not only proclaiming the Kingdom of God but bringing glory & honour to our Lord Jesus Christ. A former coach from Washington Redskins Vince Lombardi was famous for his statement: Winning isn t the most important thing: it is the only thing Shortly before Vince Lombardi died he declared: I wish I d never said it. I did not mean for people to crush human values and morality As Christians good sportsmanship should be our Golden Rule. We should encourage our students to treat others as we would like to be treated. We should desire for our opponent what we desire for ourselves. The desire to win should not take precedence over being honest and showing respect. This is how we can honour God. It is however important to remember that we must always point our students to Christ. If we only focused on good sportsmanship we would not be any different to the secular sporting world that also encourages fair play. The CSSA Committee of Management is responsible for reviewing and implementing Policies and Procedures to ensure that the Association s aims are achieved. Part of the review process undertaken in 2014 was to fine tune the CSSA Constitution and in particular our Statement of Affirmation and Membership requirements. These changes will ensure that as we move forward we do not compromise on what we believe to be important as Christian Educators. In 2014 the Committee of Management also appointed Amanda Butterworth as the Assistant Executive Officer into a permanent part-time position. This has been a very successful appointment with Amanda introducing & implementing many new ideas into the Association. I have appreciated Amanda s input and Godly wisdom on many issues and look forward to working with her in the future. I m sure you all agree that Amanda is a very valued member of the team. 3 I would like to thank the Committee of Management for their ongoing support and commitment to CSSA. In particular I would to thank the representatives from Country schools who spend many hours travelling to Sydney in their own time for meetings. The insight they give from a country schools perspective is invaluable and ensures that the needs of all schools in our association are taken into consideration. Finally I would like to thank our hard working state convenors who back up year after year after year. Their continued support and commitment to CSSA means that we can offer our students the best opportunity to compete in a wide variety of sports to represent their school and Association using the gifts and talents God has given them. 23 Primary Sports Reports In 2014 Christian Schools Sports Association (CSSA) has 76 member primary schools with nearly 10,000 primary aged students. In order to serve our member schools and students, in accordance with our Statement of Aims; In 2014 CSSA organised and ran 5 State Championships (Athletics, Swimming, Gymnastics, Cross Country, Biathlon) 8 Gala Days (Cricket, Basketball (2), Netball, Football, Golf, Softball, Tennis) 2 NSW Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Trials (Boys Football, Netball, Girls Football) and 6 Cricket and AFL Fun Days, for Primary aged students in our schools. 440 of our Primary students competed at NSW CIS Gala Days / Championships OR were nominated to try out for a NSW CIS team. 74 of these students were selected to represent NSW CIS at NSW Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA) events. 14 of these students were selected to represent NSW PSSA at School Sports Australia (SSA) events. One student Cassandra Fayers of Maitland Christian School won the SSA event for the second year in a row Cross Country. Others performed extremely well at these high levels and their achievements are listed on the relevant sport page. 24 Primary Sports Reports AFL In 2014, CSSA in cooperation with AFL NSW/ACT, ran 3 AFL Fun Days. These days are designed to introduce children to the game of AFL by participating in a series of skills sessions and then using the skills in a game situation. The aim of the day is FUN. Fun in learning skills, fun in competition, fun in playing games and fun in participating in community with peers from other schools. 56 Secondary Sports Reports In 2014 Christian Schools Sports Association (CSSA) has 63 member secondary schools with over 15,000 secondary aged students. In order to serve our member schools and students, in accordance with our Statement of Aims; In 2013 CSSA organised and ran 5 State Championships (Athletics, Swimming, Gymnastics, Cross Country, Triathlon) 4 Gala Days/Championships (Cricket, Netball, Football, Golf) 3 Trials for NSW Combined Independent Schools (CIS) teams (Football, 15&U Netball, Open Netball) 9 Gala Days incorporating trials for CIS teams (Hockey, Volleyball, Touch Football, Rugby Union (2), Softball, Basketball (2), Tennis). 850 of our Secondary students competed at NSW CIS Gala Days / Championships OR were nominated to try out for a NSW CIS team. 102 of these students were selected to represent NSW CIS at NSW All Schools events. 12 of these students were selected to represent NSW All Schools at School Sports Australia (SSA) events. One student Sarah Easthope of Penrith Christian School was selected to play in the Australian School Girls Football Team. Others performed extremely wee at these high levels and their achievements are listed on the relevant sport page.
