6 Description 2 Description This application note describes how to access a remote network of WAGO Ethernet controllers via an analog dial-up connection. The dial-in connection is established through the 3Com analog LAN Modem model: Office Connect Dual 56k LAN Modem. This application note describes: - The configuration of the LAN Modem, - configuring a dial-up connection under Windows 95, Windows NT4 and Win2k, - accessing the Ethernet controllers from the WAGO-I/O Pro 32 software. The dial-up connection then allows the following to be carried out: - Remote maintenance: Operating, monitoring and programming of WAGO Ethernet controllers using the Wago I/O Pro 32 software. Data transfer: Data transfer with any program which uses the Modbus-TCP protocol. (e.g.: VB6 or VBA applications with ActiveMBT components.) The general arrangement is shown in the following schematic diagram: PC WAGO-I/O-PRO 32 User-Application RS232 Telephone network Modem WAGO-I/O LAN-Modem 2.1 Required hardware and software The connection was tested using the following hardware and software: Description Manufacturer Type Ethernet Controller WAGO OfficeConnect Dual 56k LAN Modem 3Com 3C888-ME Analog modem serial (Test1) ELSA Microlink 56k Analog modem PCMCIA (Test2) Xircom Private telephone exchange (PBX) AGFEO AC141 WebPhonie plus Operating systems Microsoft Win2k, WinNT4 (SP6), Win95 WAGO-I/O Pro 32 WAGO V2.1(SP10+)
Implementation 7 3 Implementation The following describes the main steps required to configure and commission the connection. Further information can be found in the documentation for the respective devices. The following diagram shows the configuration of the test arrangement. PC WAGO I/O Pro 32 or other application ip= sm= gw=any Analog modem e.g. ELSA Microlink 56k (virtual) ip= Telephone network Dual 56k LAN Modem 3Com OfficeConnect ip= sm= gw=auto DUN HUB ip= sm= gw= ip= sm= gw= ip= sm= gw= ip= sm= gw= Note Some aspects of configuration are dependent on the configuration of the local telephone network. Above all when using a private telephone exchange (PBX), it is necessary to ensure correct configuration of the telephone connection. Technical details should be clarified between the modem manufacturer and the operator of the private telephone exchange.
8 Implementation 3.1 Configuring the Ethernet controller The IP addresses, the subnet mask and the gateway is configured with the BootP server. The gateway address should be specified as the IP address of the LAN Modem.
Implementation Configuring the LAN Modem (server side) The LAN Modem has a built-in web-based configuration program. Configuration is carried out with an Internet browser using the IP address of the LAN Modem (see figure). The factory default for the IP address is as follows: The web-based configuration program first prompts you to choose and specify a new administration password. The password is intended to limit access to the configuration program. The following window is shown after specifying the password. If necessary, click LAN parameters to disable the DHCP server function.
10 Implementation Configuring Dial-in Access The term 'server side' is used to describe a LAN Modem which receives incoming calls. You can configure up to 10 remote callers. The LAN Modem only accepts incoming calls with the appropriate connection types. The 56K and Dual 56K LAN Modem only accepts incoming calls from other analog devices such as a normal analog modem, a 56K LAN Modem, a second Dual 56K LAN Modem or another analog router. It will not accept incoming calls from an ISDN terminal adapter or an ISDN LAN Modem. In order to configure the server-side LAN Modem to receive incoming calls, it must first be configured for dial-in access. The following three steps are necessary: - Change the user name and password of the remote administrator - Configure global parameters for incoming calls - Create a user profile for each incoming caller with the Dial-In Wizard Changing the password of the remote administrator The user log-in for the remote administrator allows remote dial-in to the LAN Modem solely for the purpose of remote configuration. The factory default for the user account of the remote administrator is as follows: User name: Admin Password: 1234 You can only configure the LAN Modem for dial-in access after changing the administrator password. 1. On the Main Configuration page of the LAN Modem configuration program, click Dial-in and then click Dial-in User. This opens the page "Dial-in User Selection". 2. Click Admin and then click Select. Delete the default password in the password field and specify new password of your choice. 3. Click OK. You can now configure the global dial-in parameters as described in the next section.
Implementation Configuring the global dial-in parameters The global dial-in parameters are used to assign modem line resources for incoming calls and to configure preferences for dial-in authentication. Please carry out the following steps: 1. On the Main Configuration page of the LAN Modem configuration program, click Dial-In and then click Dial-in Global. This opens the page "Dial- In Global Parameters". 2. In the field Channels allocated for Dial-in click "1 if you only want to assign 1 telephone line for incoming calls (default). Click "2 if you want to assign both telephone lines for incoming calls. The two lines can be used either by a single caller with a multilink PPP connection or two callers who dial in simultaneously. To allow both telephone lines to be used by a single caller, check the check box Allow Multilink. 3. Do not check this check box if you only want to allow one line per incoming caller. The field Callback Prefix is used to specify a prefix to the telephone number (e.g. 0 ) which is required to get an outside line. This is normally only necessary if you use a private telephone exchange (PBX). Leave this field empty if a prefix is not required. 4. Choose None in the drop down list LAN-to-LAN Site Number to configure the LAN Modem to only receive in-coming calls from a single-user client.
12 Implementation If you choose None the IP address of the LAN Modem will not be changed. (advanced users may decide to choose None if the LAN Modem was already configured manually for static IP addressing). In the PPP Authentication field check boxes for the authentication types that the LAN Modem should use to negotiate all incoming calls. The types you choose should match those of the dial-up software on the client side. Click Submit when you have finished your entries. The server-side configuration of the dial-in global parameters is now finished. You should now use the Dial-In Wizard to create dial-in user profiles. A separate dial-in user profile must be configured for each incoming caller Creating a Dial-In User Profile with the Dial-In Wizard The following steps are required to create a Single User Dial-In Profile using the Dial-in Wizard: In the LAN Modem Main Configuration page, click Dial-In and then click Dial-In Wizard. This opens the page "Dial-In Wizard Profile Type Selection": Choose Single User from the drop down list and click Next. This shows the page "Dial-In Wizard Password". Specify a user name and password of your choice. This is the user name and password that the remote caller uses to call the LAN Modem. The same user name and password is specified on the remote client in the User Name and Password fields when configuring the connection in Dial-Up Networking.
Implementation 13 Click Next. You are then shown the page "Dial-In Wizard Internet Service Provider Selection". Choose <NONE>, since it is not necessary to allow the remote client to access the Internet via this connection. Now click Finish. After configuring the dial-in user profile with the Dial-in Wizard you can now make more settings on the "Dial-in User Parameters" page. This page also allows you to configure an Advanced Dial-in User profile or to configure a new dial-in user profile without using the Dial-in Wizard. You can configure up to 10 dial-in user profiles. Click Dial-in Users to show the page "Dial-in User Selection". Choose the previously created dial-in user from the drop down list and click Select. Your are then shown the page "Dial-in User Parameters". Choose Single-User Dial-in in the field Type of Use: Single-User Dial-in allows this remote user to call the LAN Modem from a normal analog modem or a second analog LAN Modem, whereby the interconnected PCs can share the same IP address with the help of NAT (Network Address Translation). In the Idle Timer field specify the length of time the LAN Modem should wait without data traffic before dropping the call. The default is 300 seconds (5 minutes). The field ISP Selection is used to choose the provider which the dial-in user can access. You can also specify whether Data Compression should be activated or deactivated. The default is deactivated. Data compression will only be used if it is activated on both ends of the connection. The server-side configuration is now finished. Further help with configuring the LAN Modem can be found on the 3Com LAN Modem Support site at:
14 Implementation 3.3 Configuring a Dial-up Connection (client side) The term 'client side' is used to describe access through an analog modem to a remote LAN Modem. The following description assumes that an analog modem is installed and configured on the client PC. Please refer to the modem documentation for instructions on installing the modem. By way of example, the following description describes remote access using the WAGO I/O Pro 32 software. The same configuration steps are necessary for any other program that is able to make a transparent TCP/IP connection.
Implementation Configuring a Dial-up Connection Profile under Win95 Choose Start ->Programme ->Zubehör -> DFÜ-Netzwerk-> Neue Verbindung Specify name of your choice for the connection and click Next. Enter the phone number of the remote LAN Modem and click Next. Now click Finish. Select the new connection LanModem1 with the right mouse button and choose Properties from the context menu.
16 Implementation Click the tab Server types. Uncheck the checkboxes for IPX and NetBEUI. Click the button TCP/IP Settings. In the TCP/IP Settings window: Click Specify IP Address and choose an unused IP address from the local network (e.g.: ).
Implementation Configuring a Dial-up Connection Profile under WinNT4 Choose Start ->Programs ->Accessories -> Dial up Network Click New Specify a name of your choice for the connection and click Next. Check the checkbox Allow Unencrypted password and click Next.
18 Implementation Enter the phone number of the remote LAN Modem and click Next and then Finish. In the main window, click Further in the context menu and select Eintrags- und Modemeigenschaften bearbeiten... Click the button TCP/IP Settings and choose an unused IP Address from the local network.
Implementation Configuring a Dial-up Connection Profile under Win2k Choose Start -> Einstellungen -> Netzwerk- und DFÜ-Verbindung Double-click on Create New Connection and then click Next. Choose Connect to a Private Network and then click Next. Choose the device (analog modem) with which you want to make the connection and click Next.
20 Implementation Enter the phone number of the remote LAN Modem and click Next. Assign the access rights and click Next. Enter a name of your choice for the connection and click Finish.
Implementation 21 Click Properties and then click the Network tab. Check the checkbox Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.
22 Implementation Specify an unused IP Address from the local network and click OK. You can now establish the connection by clicking Dial.
Implementation Testing the Connection The following steps are required to test the connection: Make a dial-up connection to the 3Com LAN Modem. Use the ping command to test the IP address of the LAN Modem. Use the ping command to test the IP address of the Ethernet Controller. You can open a DOS window with: Start -> Programme -> Zubehör -> Eingabeaufforderung If you get the response Destination Host Not Reachable from the standard gateway of your network card, under Win2k you can temporarily deactivate the LAN connection of the network card.
24 Implementation 3.5 Configuring the WAGO I/O-Pro 32 software Create a new project and choose Online/Communication Parameters in the menu. Click New to create a new entry. Specify a name of your choice for the connection. Choose the driver "Ethernet_TCP_IP" and click OK. You must then specify the IP address of the Ethernet Controller (in this example, ).
