6 6 Description 2 Description This application note describes how to access a remote network of WAGO Ethernet controllers and the IPC family of products through a high-speed Internet connection. The connection is established with a high-speed Internet connection attached to a Linksys Router (WRT54GS was used in this example) to communicate to a remote site. This application note describes: The configuration of the Linksys router Configuration of the WAGO Ethernet device Remote maintenance with CoDeSys Accessing the Ethernet device with an internet browser Linksys Router Remote Computer connection to the Wago Controller Internet ` 3 Setting up the router on the network The following will describe how to configure the router to handle the TCP/UDP communication from the Internet and direct them to the appropriate devices. 3.1 Connect to the router settings Connect the WAGO device to one of the Ethernet ports on the back of the Linksys router (labeled 1 though 4). The Internet port is used to connect to the high-speed modem.

7 Setting up the router on the network 7 To access the router s Web-based Utility, launch Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox, and enter the router s default IP address, , in the Address field. Then, press Enter. A password request page will appear. Leave the User Name field blank. The first time you open the Web-based Utility, use the default password admin. (You can set a new password from the Administration tab s Management screen.) Click the OK button to continue. In the main screen, go to the section marked LAN. This is where the IP address and subnet mask for the router are defined. Enter the new IP address in the Local IP Address field and choose the correct subnet mask from the drop down menu. Once the changes have been made click the Save Settings button and continue to the next step. 3.2 Configuration DDNS Settings The Linksys router offers the ability to connect using the Dynamic Domain Name System (DDNS) feature. DDNS lets you assign a fixed host and domain name to a dynamic Internet IP address. This is useful when you are hosting your own website, FTP server, or other server behind the Router. Before you can use this feature you will need to sign up for DDNS service at or DDNS service providers. Once a host has been registered with one of the DDNS services, click on the DDNS link under the Setup tab to configure the router.

8 8 Setting up the router on the network Once at the DDNS screen, enter the user name and password of the DDNS account in the appropriate fields. Then add the host name that was created when the account was setup. This enables the Linksys router to update the current IP address of the router every time the DHCP server provides a new dynamic IP address to your router. This eliminates the need for a computer to be on the LAN to update the IP address to the DDNS server or remember the IP address when retrying to connect to your WAGO Ethernet device. 3.3 Port Forwarding In the default setting, the router does not route messages to a specific device on the network. In order to communicate with the WAGO device from outside the local area network, the router needs to be setup to direct the traffic to the correct device. 9 Configuration of the WAGO Ethernet device 9 To setup the Linksys router to handle the correct incoming traffic to the control, the port forwarding must be enabled to direct the data to the correct IP address. In the configuration web page of the router, select Applications & Gaming -> Port Forwarding. Enter a description of the port in the Application field. In the Start and End fields, enter that port range that the IP packets that will pass to the corresponding IP address. Verify that the checkmark is present in order for the forwarding to work. Click on Save Settings to set the parameters in the router. 4 Configuration of the WAGO Ethernet device In order for the WAGO device to be able to communicate over the Internet, communication settings must be correctly configured. The example below shows how to setup the WAGO Ethernet Controller.

10 10 Configuration of the WAGO Ethernet device 4.1 TCP/IP Settings Connect to the Wago Ethernet device in your LAN (Local Area Network) by opening Internet Explorer and enter the IP address of the WAGO device. Select the TCP/IP link. If a login prompt appears, enter the following: Username: admin Password: wago Enter the correct IP address, subnet mask, and gateway. If the source address of the communication is outside of the subnet range, the communication packet will go thought the gateway. Press the SUBMIT buttons to save the changes to the controller. Cycle the power on the controller to apply the new settings.

11 Configuration of the WAGO Ethernet device Port Settings The port settings link on the WAGO device web site gives the ability to select what type of communication protocols the device will accept. It is important the only ports that are open are the ones that will actually be used; otherwise the WAGO device will be exposed to an unnecessary security risk Warning Change the Administrator s account password in order to prevent unauthorized access to the WAGO device settings and files. Go to the Security link to change the password.

12 12 Remote maintenance with CoDeSys 5 Remote maintenance with CoDeSys When the WAGO device and the Linksys router are properly configured, CoDeSys can be used from a remote site to create a new internal program or to modify it. Create a new project or open an existing project. Select Online -> Communication Parameters. When the Communication Parameters Dialog box opens, click on New to add an additional connection to the CoDeSys gateway. Under the device table, select TCP/IP and enter a unique name to describe the channel communication. Click OK to create the connection channel. Once the channel has been created, change the value of the IP address to the hostname that was created with the DDNS. Click the OK button to save the new communication channel. Select Online Download to transfer program changes to the remote device.

13 Accessing the Ethernet device with an Internet Browser 13 6 Accessing the Ethernet device with an Internet Browser Once all of the router and WAGO Ethernet device settings are properly set, it is easy to bring up the main webpage of the WAGO device. Open your favorite browser and enter the hostname that was created with the DDNS server and press Enter. When the setup has been completed, the remote site will have the same access to the WAGO device as with a direct connection from a local computer.
