Welcome New Teachers! Ms. Roberta Haines Second Grade Ms. Roberta has worked with students of all ages for over a decade. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Theatre Design from Wisconsin Lutheran College, and her teaching credential from Cardinal Stritch University and Montessori Certification from University of California, Irvine. Ms. Lauren Kimball Kindergarten 2 Ms. Lauren has most recently taught Kindergarten in San Francisco. She has a Bachelor of Arts in World Arts & Cultures and Environmental Studies from UCLA and her teaching credential Masters degree in Education from the University of San Francisco.
Isabelle Cordemans 2nd-3rd and 4th grade Art Teacher Mme. Isabelle Cordemans is a practicing artist and exhibits internationally (currently Belgium and Michigan, USA) She graduated from The Royal Academy of Art in Antwerp, Belgium and from the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna, Italy in painting. I am very excited to be guiding the students in their art discoveries this year. I will expose them to a large variety of materials and techniques, referencing existing artists and letting the children delve into their own creative endeavors. We will focus on life drawing to understand that The arts make vivid the fact that neither words in their literal form nor numbers exhaust what we can know. E. Eisner. I see the classroom as a workshop where it is important that each student has time to collaborate and observe others work and communicate what is seen. While observing, our mind/hand connection is fully absorbed in a creative interaction between seeing, making decisions about color and shapes, and teaching us that there is no right way, just the observed and the expressed way. We will explore patterns, grids, space, shape, color, light and textures. The children will be guided in the direction that works best with their natural inclinations but will also expose them to completely foreign ways of addressing a project. Coach Spencer Athletics and Wellness Program Coach Spencer has coached and taught athletics in several schools in Southern California. He has a Bachelor s of Science degree in Kinesiology Athletics from California State University, Northridge and a Masters degree in Education from Concordia University.
Ms. Katelyn Ward In-house Substitute Teacher Ms. Katie has taught Kindergarten through 3rd grade in her home state of Wisconsin as well as in Mexico. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and English as a Second Language from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and teaching credential from the State of Wisconsin and awaiting confirmation from the State of California. Allise Leffen Pelham 4th and 5th Grade Art Allise Pelham is a native of Upperville, Virginia, about 60 miles west of Washington, D.C., and a professional portrait and landscape artist with over 20 years of experience working with children. Her natural emphasis in the classroom is on fun, and challenging her students to greater heights in creativity through play. It s clear to the children that we are working towards a goal, but each step forward is rewarding and beautiful in its own right we re just having the best time getting there. She received her BFA in Figurative Drawing from the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC, in In 2010, she was awarded her MFA in Figurative Painting from Laguna College of Art & Design (Laguna Beach, California), where she also won several awards for portraiture. While her own works currently tend toward realism, she is often inspired by the creative solutions to problems she has presented to her classes, and delights in knowing that they learn from each other. For examples of her work, please visit; Philosophy Design is all around us. A short walk down your street will reveal an overwhelming number of thought-provoking examples both natural and man-made. These examples provide great opportunities to talk about our fundamental visual language: The Elements and Principles of Design, Basic Perspective, & Color Theory. These building blocks, spiced with personal expression and meaning (yours, mine, or anyone else s), can often be recognized as what we call Art.
Tina Hamersley German K2 2nd and Foreign Language Intensive Levels 1 & 2 I received my education degree in Bremen and a teaching certificate in Lower Saxony, Germany. I want to help each child to understand and to express his or herself in German, at an age-appropriate level. With role play and hands-on activities we will learn German language through our traditions of food, songs, games, and stories. For example, we will play games with colored blocks to learn the colors, sing a song to learn the parts of the body, bake German bread together, and prepare a German breakfast to learn about different foods. In the German 1 and German 2 class, I want each child to expand their German skills, to activate and build on the knowledge of German they already have, and to feel more comfortable expressing themselves to each other in German. They will learn to introduce themselves and their families, talk about their hobbies and their life in California. We will read short German stories together, sing, and play games. We will role play a visit to the doctor or a meeting with their friends in town, so that they gain more confidence and practice in speaking German. I will introduce the children to German holiday traditions and food, which we will prepare and enjoy together. The Book Fair Is Coming! October By Maria Onesi The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to the Willowbrook Campus from October 16-23rd! Join us in our goal of raising $12,000 for new books this year! Our students are full of excitement and energy during our annual Scholastic Book Fair! They make lists, often choosing to spend recesses browsing and learn that there is no greater joy than finding a good book or discovering a new author. Please join us again this year in indulging your children s love of reading by making your book purchases with us. It is a great time to do some early Christmas shopping, before the rush of the Holiday Season. Scholastic rewards us with Scholastic Book Dollars, based on our total sales from the Book Fair. We use these Book Dollars to build up our classroom libraries across all age groups. In September, we used $6000 to acquire books from the proceeds of last year s Book Fair. With this money, we purchased a variety of Big Books, picture books, and novels for children from preschool through 6th grade. Have some time to help us out? If you d like to meet other Anneliese families, work the cash register, help with setup or take down, or help students make book selections, we would love your help! If you can help in any way, please contact Chris McLaughlin, our Book Fair Parent Chair, with your contact info and availability. Her address is abebabyandella@yahoo.com
Plein Air Painting by Michael Thomas One of the great highlights of 4th grade is The Plein Air Paint Out with award winning artist, Jeff Sewell at Heisler Park. Our adventure started with a visit to the Irvine Museum and continued with a live demonstration by Mr. Sewell in the 4th grade classroom. He demonstrated his painting techniques for creating a plein air painting. It is incredible to watch a complete painting unfold before our eyes. Mr. Sewell and other professional artists will provide our students with the incredible opportunity to create their very own mini-masterpiece of our local ocean landscape. CARPOOL CHAMPIONS Challenge Let s Go Even Greener with the Green Team Carpool or Ride the Shuttle! Thanks to our many families who have registered for our Inter Campus Shuttle or Ridgecrest Park Bus this fall. We are so pleased that 12 to 14 children are riding on any given day, from Ridgecrest Park and to and from the campuses. Kudos to all of you for taking advantage of the free ride and doing your part to reduce traffic and emissions in Laguna Canyon. We would like to encourage even more of you to register your children to ride the shuttles so that we can do even better at reducing traffic and idling time. The Green Team has placed a white board in the garden Outdoor Classroom with the heading CARPOOL CHAMPIONS. Your child should log each ride on the whiteboard. All carpoolers or shuttle riders who ride consistently every week will join Maestra Juliana and Ms. Jaynie for a party in December to celebrate the positive contributions to the environment. Information on the Shuttle routes, drivers and schedules are available at your campus office or the Parent Portal under School Forms.
SEEDS Receives Grants The Laguna Beach Garden Club has graciously donated $500 to SEEDS in support of our garden program. The funds will be used to acquire more native, drought-tolerant plants, more organic seeds, and other garden supplies! A big thank you to the lagunabeachgardenclub.org for their support! The John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Foundation--Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Mazmanian SEEDS received a $5,000 grant to purchase additional instruments for Anneliese Schools from The John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Foundation through the generosity of Daniel and Mary Mazmanian. Our Orchestra/Band and lower grade instrumental music program will greatly benefit from this grant!
