1 1 Further Information Job title NIHR BioResource IT Systems Administrator Grade 7 Salary range 28,695-37,394 Staff Group Department / Institution Academic Related CIMR: Medical Genetics Role Summary Role-specific information The role of this post is to support the information systems of the NIHR BioResource. The NIHR BioResource aims to recruit in excess of 60,000 volunteers and patients by The NIHR BioResource is modelled on the Cambridge BioResource (CBR, ( which is an already established panel of over 15,000 volunteers who have provided clinical information and samples that allow them to be recalled by genotype and/or phenotype for experimental medicine studies and early phase clinical trials in local clinical research facilities. The NIHR BioResource is initially involving the NIHR BRCs in Cambridge, London, Newcastle and Oxford and the NIHR Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit (BRU) in Leicester; with its headquarters housed in the Cambridge Clinical School. The NIHR BioResource aims to provide a unique and powerful resource for studying disease mechanisms and for characterising the benefits and limitations of emerging therapies, aiming towards future trials that incorporate disease mechanistic knowledge and studies and that are personalising therapies based on stratifying patients/individuals at risk of disease by disease-associated phenotypes. The design of the NIHR BioResource, modelled on the Cambridge NIHR BioResource, is based on two stages. Stage 1 encompasses the enrolment of research volunteers (both healthy volunteers and patients) onto volunteer panels at local BioResources to include collection and storage of contact information, personal details, including lifestyle and health information and collection of biological samples (DNA, serum, plasma) and sample storage. Stage 2 involves recalling these enrolled research volunteers according to their genotype and/or phenotype to participate in research studies. The appointee, reporting to the NIHR BioResource Information Systems Manager, will play a major role in implementing and administering the NIHR BioResource core team s IT infrastructure, including: User management Security Disaster recovery and backup Equipment provisioning

2 2 Server setup and maintenance Hardware / office software support Liaison with service providers for coordinated user support Equipment audit IT infrastructure strategy support The role will also involve helping with the identification and implementation of mechanisms for data exchange with collaborators in the NIHR BioResource, including the eight BRCs/BRUs, researchers and clinicians, and organisations such as, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, INTERVAL team, NIHR BioResource - Rare Diseases and the European Bioinformatics Institute. NIHR BioResource Organisation Chart Head of IT (vacant) IT Systems Analyst Senior Data Scientist Information Systems Manager (vacant) Data Scientist X Software Developer Clinical Informatician Key Responsibilities Key duties and responsibilities 1 System Administration Coordination of user account setup and management with service providers Responding to communication with internal and national security bodies where necessary Setup and maintenance of linux servers Setup and maintenance of IT services based on web client and databases Implementation of backup for provided services Implementation and audit of security policies Monitoring of server and services statuses with estimates for further growth Evaluating service providers. Holding responsibility for running and testing the backup for main systems % time spent/ frequency 30%

3 3 2 User Support The role holder provides daily support to all members of staff, advising users on correct use of equipment. The role holder is responsible for: Inducting new staff to system use Providing wireless service delivery to staff and visitors Explaining security policy to all staff Monitoring issues being resolved by service providers such as Clinical School Computing Services (CSCS) and University High Performance Computing (HPC) Service Receiving and responding to verbal queries from staff and ensuring their resolution. Instigating and receiving/responding to s from staff, including helpdesk computing staff Assist in resolving hardware and software faults 3 Office and Network Computing Support Delivering rolling programme of equipment to the NIHR BioResource core team Maintenance and update of Linux and if necessary Windows workstations Requesting configuration setup for printers & photocopiers 4 Teamwork Teaching/Documentation The role holder is required to keep intranet documentation up to date in addition to authoring new content, and managing existing content. Part of this activity is to provide guidance and documentation to the IT core. The role holder is responsible for: Writing and publishing internal documentation and relation for the above Writing up statistical results using complex figures to aid senior managers decisions Apprising staff of Data Protection rights and responsibilities with regard to confidential data including patient and clinical data, University of Cambridge security and network usage policy as well as other services provider policies 5 Project Support The role holder is responsible for providing project support to the core IT team, by means of: Identifying, designing and implementing connection mechanisms to enable the IT team to set up and maintain secure data exchange protocols with collaborating bodies Configuring and maintaining suitable production, test and development environments 6 Equipment Audit The role holder is required to keep staff up to date with software and equipment deployment both with deployment of new technology or re-deployment of existing technology and maintain asset registers. 7 Strategic Planning 20% 15% 15% 10% 5%

4 4 The role holder is expected to keep abreast of modern developments in IT, and is expected to advise improvements to the Information Systems Manager, and help plan and deploy service. Project managing the specification and implementation of the NIHR BioResource IT and networking infrastructure. Planning implementation of hardware and software upgrades Monitoring of approved network security policies Designing and implementing data exchange within approved security policies and data transfer protocols Negotiation and procurement of computing equipment, printers and consumables through University-approved providers. 5% Person Profile The role holder is responsible for implementing and supporting software and hardware solutions for the NIHR BioResource, with a user base of approximately 25 research assistants, administrators, nurses, informatics, data science staff and management. The role holder is specifically responsible for providing database and application server maintenance, backups, software and hardware audit, monitoring issues being resolved by service providers, procurement and negotiation of computing equipment and services, strategic and operational support for data exchange mechanisms within the NIHR BioResource collaborative framework. Education & qualifications Specialist knowledge & skills Interpersonal & communication skills Educated to degree level in a scientific/technical discipline or equivalent experience Linux server management and per service optimisation Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows 7 environment MySQL database maintenance and performance Good LDAP and Active Directory understanding Bash scripting TCP/IP and networking SFTP/SCP/SSH protocols along with security compliance and standards Hardware and software troubleshooting Collation, analysis and dissemination of technical information Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills Excellent verbal and written communication skills, enabling communication with all levels of staff Ability to prioritise and plan work efficiently, and

School of Clinical Medicine The School of Clinical Medicine at the University of Cambridge ( the Clinical School ) is one of the UK s leading medical schools. Its strength is built on close relationships with pre-clinical science and translational partnerships with NHS organisations. Organisation of the School The School of Clinical Medicine comprises 12 formal Departments (Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Medical Genetics, Medicine including Anaesthesia and Clinical Pharmacology Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Oncology, Paediatrics, Public Health and Primary Care, Psychiatry, Radiology, Surgery and Clinical Neurosciences) which map onto service delivery within the University Hospital and undergraduate and postgraduate clinical teaching. Alongside departments, the School maintains a number of cross-departmental institutes to bring together researchers with cognate interest. At present, there are three institutes: Cambridge Institute for Medical Research; Institute of Metabolic Science and Institute of Public Health with a fourth planned (in Cardio-Respiratory Medical Research). Cambridge University Health Partners is based on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus at Addenbrooke s Hospital.
