Each year, this sell-out event helps the JCC to fulfill a major mission: to assist children with physical, emotional and developmental disabilities. Through the support of our generous and caring community, the JCC has been able to enhance our offerings for this special population. We now offer more than 70 weekly/monthly programs to meet the needs of more than 500 children, who are often excluded from vital educational and recreational opportunities simply because appropriate programming is not available to meet their special needs. Our goal this year is celebrate all we have accomplished in the last ten years and to raise more funds than ever so we can grow and sustain our programming for years to come. As in years past, the Classic will feature a 11:45 am shotgun start, a Million Dollar Shoot Out, as well as hole-in-one competitions, prizes, awards and a 50/50 raffle. The day will also include breakfast, lunch, a lavish cocktail reception and dinner. Golf pros will also be available throughout the day to help players fine-tune their skills. A major highlight of the Classic each year is a live, silent and fisherman auction that take place during the cocktail reception and dinner. The auction, which adds exponentially to the event s fundraising goals, features unique, hard-to-get items. The JCC always looks to ensure that no child in our community is denied basic life experiences and we are devoted to finding new and innovative ways to provide for children with disabilities, explains JCC Executive Director Avi A. Lewinson. The annual Golf Classic is one way we succeed in this effort, and to be celebrating our 10th anniversary is a major milestone. In spite of the challenging financial times we are currently facing, our community continually demonstrates their shared concern and support and we are extremely grateful for this outpouring of generosity. There s still time for our community to help us reach our goals by donating to our auction! We can be so much more successful with your help. Can you donate a service, product or item that you think might be of value to others? Some examples might include a visit with a celebrity, a week (or weekend) at your vacation home, tickets to a sporting event, a round of golf at your country club, concert tickets, a backstage tour or an internship at your company for a high school or college student. Please be creative! Your contacts and possessions may prove to be valuable treasures for someone to bid on! To date, proceeds from the Classic have provided summer camping experiences for children with cancer and other blood disorders; the chance for children with special needs to participate in our nursery school and summer camp; the opportunity for developmentally disabled children and teens to acquire valuable life skills to improve their daily lives; and the chance for people of all ages with special needs to participate in Special Games Special People, a fun-filled day of sports and camaraderie. So, Play fore! the Kids and feel like a winner. For more information about sponsorship opportunities and participation, please contact Sharon Potolsky at or spotolsky@jccotp.org. For those who have never explored this part of our Talmud, Pir kei Ah vot consists of a series of Jewish teachings, aphorisms and brief expositions. Many of them come to reinforce the utter sanctity and utmost significance of our Written and Oral Traditions. Many others focus on Jewish ethics and morality, presenting us with the wisdom of decent Jewish conduct and behavior in all spheres of life. Reciting and studying Pir kei Ah vot is a timely exercise, say our Sages, because there s something significant about the summer; its long days and hot weather, that can be transformative. The summer gives us an opportunity, not only to study, but to learn some important life lessons. During the summer, children, young or old and even adults can learn about getting along and cooperating with one another. In supervised environments, especially in the framework of summer camp, they learn about social skills what they are, how to use and abide by them; the benefits of success, the frustrations of failure. It s an ideal chance to drive home lessons in good manners, ethical and moral values and habits. Compared to the academic year, the camp season is very short; but its impact is profound. During the school year, interactions are mainly between teacher and students, while in a camp setting, Renovation Update the focus is just the opposite. Every moment is filled with friendship and socializing. Surely, these days, when our kids spend the majority of their time texting friends in the next room or in front of their computers playing the latest video games, human relations have become more of an art form than a natural impulse. The interactions nurtured in camp, however, whether it s amongst the campers themselves, between the campers and the staff, or within the members of the staff, are a cultural and social imperative. There is another invaluable and indispensable virtue to our Jewish camp setting, borne out, again, by a whole slew of recent studies: being Jewish. Few surroundings foster more positive and constructive Jewish feelings than the Jewish camp experience. The number one positive Jewish experience cited is not Shul, not youth groups, not a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, but the camp experience. It allows our kids to freely and comfortably live their Jewishness and absorb its values. It helps us to develop an affinity for the pursuit of a Jewish future. And that makes it a Jewish imperative. As we wish all of you a Chag Shavuot Samaeach and a healthy, productive and happy summer, we also urge you to give your children the gift of a memorable and meaningful Jewish camp experience. B vracha, Avi. A. Lewinson On behalf of our Boards of Directors and Trustees and staff we wish you and your family a Joyous Shavuot See holiday closings on left. Construction is booming on the fourth phase of our exciting five-phase renovation. Current enhancements include: transforming classrooms 1-6 and the nursery activity area in the Rubin Nursery Wing; reconfiguring the entire second floor hallway, including the old conference rooms and Marcus library; and building the new, welcoming front entrance and lobby. In spite of all the recent bad weather, construction has progressed on schedule. All the exterior work for the second floor expansion is complete; the exterior of the Rubin Nursery Wing is rebuilt; and our workers are currently framing out the new second floor space that will house new interior meeting rooms, offices and classrooms. The new entrance and lobby are also taking shape. The frame for the new, two-story atrium is complete and work is underway on the new lobby elevator, as well as the two entrances and vestibules. To ensure a welcoming approach to our facility, site work has also begun on a new front circle, which has been completely redesigned, along with new sidewalks that will extend around the front of the building from the enclosed outdoor playground to the entrance of the new Russ Berrie Family Health and Recreation Complex. We appreciate your cooperation and patience during this very exciting transition. Construction on this important phase will continue through the end of this summer and the entire renovation will be finished by the end of January Just imagine: in no time at all the JCC will be completely upgraded with a warm and welcoming new atrium and lobby; 12 sunny new nursery classrooms, brand new offices and meetings rooms, a friendly new senior adult suite, a chic new Youth Center and our fantastic, already complete, new fitness facilities. To stay up-to-date on every phase and stage of development, please refer to signage that is displayed throughout the building. If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the renovation please do not hesitate to us at renovation@jccotp.org. Stay tuned for more exciting news!

The adventure began at the home of Elvira & James Grau, in Cresskill, NJ, where more than 150 participants enjoyed a breakfast that featured natural food chef Bethenny Frankel, creator of the widely popular Skinnygirl Margarita, and New York Times best selling author of Naturally Thin and The SkinnyGirl Dish. Bethenny shared some of her healthy cooking tips, which has made her famous as a culinary celebrity, and also discussed her role on Bravo s hit series The Real Housewives of New York City. It was only two years ago that Ginny Shulman attended Lavish Lunches for the first time and learned about our senior adult programs. At this years breakfast Ginny shared her personal experiences and expressed how grateful she was to see so many people supporting such valuable programs for seniors in our community. Both Ginny s mother and mother-in-law attend the Program at the JCC. Having my mom and mother-in-law attending this program together is wonderful, said Ginny Shulman. It gets them out of the house and has greatly improved their quality of life. My husband and I are very happy for this and it is also very comforting to know that down the road, the senior programs at the JCC are waiting to enrich the lives of so many others. Lewinson The Computer Learning Center: Fun at Any Age The JCC Computer Center for Adults has been opening many exciting doors for its students. Some have found jobs that utilize their new computer knowledge, while others enjoy a stronger bond with their children and grandchildren by learning and internet skills, and still others, like Mary Mandel, came to the Computer Center to learn the skills she d need to design her own greeting cards or, most recently, to write her autobiography for her children and grandchildren. Mary Mandel Mary is a dedicated, 85-year-old perpetual student, who has been taking classes at the SeniorNet Computer Center for about 10 years, learning skills that have made her life easier and more enjoyable. She has recently been ill, and despite her chemotherapy and other fatiguing medical treatments, Mary attends two classes each week. My oncologist tells me to go out and have fun, so that s what I do, says Mary. And for me, fun is coming to the Center, where I get to socialize with some very special people, and learn valuable skills that occupy and interest me. Coming to the JCC for these classes does me a world of good and I m so grateful to have this Center available to me. Mary Mandel lives in Tenafly and has been a JCC member for many years. Before taking computer classes, she attended many programs, lectures, concerts and Seders, crediting the JCC for enriching her life.
