6 A RICH, DIVERSE STUDENT EXPERIENCE Imagine performing with students from Japan, Germany, China, and Mexico, or liv- ing in a dorm with friends who come from four different continents and vastly different lifestyles. Walnut Hill, perhaps more than any other high school, maintains a culture of mutual respect, understanding, and acceptance that elevates everyone s thinking. 8 WRITING, FILM & MEDIA ARTS The Writing, Film & Media Arts Program at Walnut Hill offers student artists a nurturing environment in which to develop a unique and powerful storytelling voice. Whether their primary creative interests lie in crafting poetry, developing screenplays, creating short films, or engaging in another form of filmmaking or writing, this major will unite students in their collective passion for weaving text and images to produce compelling narratives. Students will be exposed to an array of mediums designed to strengthen their craft and technique, choosing from classes such as fiction, screenwriting, poetry, cinematography, and filmmaking. Opportunities in the program range from intensive studio courses to one-on-one tutorials with faculty, rich collaboration with other students and departments, fieldwork, and master classes with notable visiting artists. Through course selection, students can shape their experience to align with their specific artistic area of interest. Graduates of the program will master both the creative habits and the technical skills necessary to succeed in their future pursuits as artists and as individuals.

10 MUSIC Our internationally acclaimed Music program attracts talented students from around the world. It is the unique program draws students directly into the life of Boston s professional music community, allowing them to study

11 only program in the United States linking a major conservatory (New England Conservatory) with an independent school. This in a conservatory environment while receiving a standard of artistic and academic training unique at the secondary school level. 13 A CHANCE TO EXPLORE Clubs and activities provide Walnut Hill students with a path to fun, friendship, and personal growth. Some students choose to make a difference in the community by working with Walnut Hill s chapter of Artists Striving to End Poverty (ASTEP), the Community Service Association, AIDS Action, or the Environmental Club. Others spend their free time exploring different aspects of their creativity by singing with the a cappella group Mixed Nuts, helping to edit the yearbook, or organizing Film Club screenings. There are also countless opportunities to explore Boston and Natick through organized excursions, and to stay fit by participating in athletic activities such as soccer, skiing, and archery, or enjoying the on campus Fitness Center. 14 A CHALLENGING COLLEGE-PREPARATORY CURRICULUM Our academic program has been developed specifically to both leverage and foster the excellent habits of a young artist s mind careful observation, critical thinking, and a desire for deep and enduring understanding. Our students enjoy a unique advantage: they can pursue their academic and artistic studies on a single campus, taught by faculty who respect and accommodate the demands placed on each student. The academic faculty at Walnut Hill has chosen specifically to teach talented young artists, and prioritizes hands-on, project-based learning.

17 DANCE Our Dance curriculum provides a preprofessional training program designed to develop strength and flexibility through a pure classical technique. This approach ultimately gives a dancer the greatest freedom and facility to pursue his or her own personal expression, and to adapt to the eclectic repertoires found in dance companies today. At each level, a schedule of classes has been created to develop the physical and technical strength that propel a student toward artistic growth. Appropriate performance opportunities further provide the challenge necessary for a young dancer to develop confidence and stage presence. 20 THEATER The objective of the Theater program is to develop skilled and disciplined young actors. We strive to challenge students both artistically and intellectually in order to facilitate their growth as complete theater artists. Our comprehensive curriculum includes Acting, Musical Theater, and Dance, combining rigorous training of the mind, body, and voice, forming a solid technique and approach to the craft. In addition, students develop an understanding and appreciation of design and production through a curriculum that is one of the finest of its kind in the country.

23 VISUAL ART Working under the guidance of professional artists/teachers, Visual Art students gain experience and skills in a range of mediums and artistic processes. These students are working to build a well-balanced portfolio that will be acceptable for admission to the nation s top art colleges and universities. Within each studio course, students are introduced to a variety of techniques upon which to build their craft. Over time, students learn to develop their own personal artistic language. As they continually acquire and improve upon essential fundamental art skills composition, form, light, color, line, shape, texture, etc. students learn to think and problem-solve creatively, as individual young artists.
