16 Plan your programme of study Our flexible degree structure gives you the freedom to study almost any combination of subjects, take papers from a variety of management disciplines, and shape your qualification to suit your personal interests and professional career plans. Choosing your papers Papers are the building blocks for your subjects and your qualification s programme of study. You will complete your undergraduate qualification by passing a certain number of papers at 100 (first-year), 200 (second-year) and 300 or 400 (third or fourth-year) level. However, students may also take up to 40 points in either of the Summer School semesters (T and S). To take higher-level papers at university, you normally have to pass lower-level papers first (100 or 200 level). 17 Accounting Accountants often hold high-level management positions where financial control, decision making, legal compliance and leadership skills are essential. Why choose Accounting? Accounting is often called a common language of business, because it underpins almost all business and organisational activities. An understanding of the role of accounting in organisations is important for all managers, regardless of their area of specialisation. Financial accountants process and communicate financial information; management accountants prepare data for management decisions; tax accountants provide tax compliance advice; and auditors check the financial reporting of organisations. Commercial law and how it relates to the conduct of business in New Zealand is also relevant to accountants. Study accounting at Waikato and any of these careers are possible. Learn from the best at a school where the academic requirements of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), CPA Australia, or ACCA accountancy professional institutions can be met with an appropriate selection of papers. Qualifications available Your subject is a professional area of study that you focus on for your qualification. Accounting can be taken as a first major for the qualifications listed below, or as a second major for most other bachelors degrees. Practical papers MSYS319 Industry Experience 2 STMG495 Industry Experience 4 STMG499 Report of an Investigation Students tend to feel both excited and apprehensive about STMG391, which is a capstone paper of the Bachelor of Studies degree. The compulsory third-year paper gives teams of students the opportunity to apply all the skills and theory they have learnt over the previous two years to produce a solid business strategy. Accounting graduate Megan Popplestone (pictured above, centre), who began working at KPMG in April 2015, says she expected the notoriously difficult paper to be time-consuming, competitive and involve lots of late nights. But she was blown away when her team, the Strategic Avengers, ended up winning the 37th WMS Case Competition last year with their brilliant business growth strategy for Tainui Group Holdings Ltd, which aims to become a $5 billion business by All of the finalists had to present their strategies and face a grilling from a panel of external judges. There are so many aspects to creating a business strategy that need to be taken into consideration. Just one small gap and the entire thing falls to pieces, says Megan. The greatest learning was how to combine the individual strengths of everyone in her team to create a well-rounded, successful strategy, and more jokingly, operating on low levels of sleep. After a five-year career in the hotel industry, Violet was eager to study overseas in an English-speaking country like New Zealand. Having worked her way from front desk and food/beverage operations to a marketing communications role at the new Crowne Plaza Hotel in North Chengdu, she wanted to sharpen her skills in public relations even further. Violet says the 12-month Master of Professional degree at Waikato, with its combination of theory and practice, was ideal for her needs. At first she found her classes quite challenging, but the way that lecturers encouraged students to think critically and act practically has been fantastic for her personal growth, she says. Violet also gains hands-on experience of public relations with a three-month internship at CLIM Systems in Hamilton. 78 The University of Waikato

See the Waikato School Student Handbook for the rules and requirements for all qualifications, subjects and papers, visit handbook A few years ago Sport Waikato CEO, former All Black and Waikato rugby legend Matthew Cooper decided he needed to get some formal qualifications next to his name. He says what really sold him on the postgraduate diploma was Waikato School s strong reputation. I knew I d be challenged and that what I learnt in the lecture theatre would be applicable at work. Although it was certainly no walk in the park, Matthew says it has changed his leadership style for the better. I m more skilful at handling problems and conflict than I used to be. I m better at understanding human behaviour and using that to get good results. The overall programme has taught me the art of listening and asking a lot more questions in my leadership role. He thinks his decision to study sent a strong signal to staff that you need never stop learning. Waikato School Undergraduate and Graduate Prospectus
