1 Instructions for field-testing the elena mobile app ***Field testing begins on 1 October and runs through 15 November, 2015*** Instructions on how to download and use the elena mobile phone application Thank you for agreeing to serve as an elena mobile phone application (mobile app) field-tester. These brief instructions will enable you to download and start exploring the mobile app. As an important output of the field-testing is feedback on ease of navigation among first time users, instructions on how to use the mobile app will be minimal. However, detailed information on what content is included in the mobile app and how to navigate can be found in the Help section of the app, which is accessible from anywhere within the app. How the elena mobile app works The mobile app is a standalone app that works anywhere no internet connection required. In order to keep the content on the mobile app current, however, the mobile app links to the elena website periodically and receives content updates such as newly added interventions, guidance documents and systematic review information when they are added to the website. Such content updates require internet connectivity via Wi-Fi or cellular connection and are scheduled on a weekly basis or whenever the mobile app is opened if it hasn't been used for an extended period of time. The mobile app has been designed to keep downloading and updating times and corresponding data usage to a minimum. What the mobile app is The mobile app is a useful tool providing much of the content on found on the elena website which can be used anywhere in the field, on a flight or anywhere else that internet connectivity is unreliable or non-existent. Some content, including full text of all relevant WHO guidance documents, links to the original systematic reviews and related information contained outside of elena on the WHO website, is not included in the mobile app. We are currently exploring ways to include this content in future versions of the mobile app. What the mobile app is not The mobile app is not a replacement for the mobile version of the elena website. In settings where internet connectivity is strong, the mobile version of the elena website gives users the full content of the elena website, including links to the full text of all relevant WHO guidance documents, systematic reviews and other related information on the WHO website, all customized for viewing and use on mobile devices. Simply visit in the mobile web browser of your choice. 1

2 Instructions for field-testing To begin the field-testing process, take the following steps: Downloading the app Downloading requires internet connectivity via Wi-Fi or cellular connection. Please note that tablet devices (e.g. ipads, Samsung Galaxy Tabs, etc.) are not supported at this time. Please address any questions about downloading the mobile app to 1. For iphone 1a. Your phone must be an iphone (4s-5s/c) running ios version 8.0 or later. 1b. You will receive an invitation via from the itunes Store to test the beta version of the elena mobile app using TestFlight with the Subject line TestFlight: You're invited to test ELENA. (AngloMediaSA is the name of the company developing the mobile app). 1c. Prior to tapping on the link Open in TestFlight, you will need to download the TestFlight app onto your iphone. TestFlight can be found in the App store and is free of charge to download. 1d. Once TestFlight has been downloaded, go back to the invitation and tap on the Open in TestFlight link in the invitation on your iphone. 2

3 1e. TestFlight should open automatically and show the screen to the right. Tap on the open button. 2. For Android Depending on the model of your phone, the following screenshots may look different. 2a. Your smartphone phone must be running Android 2.3 or later. 2b. You will receive a link to download the beta version of the mobile app in an with the Subject line You're invited to test ELENA. 2c. Before downloading the mobile app you will need to enable your smartphone to directly download apps. On the smartphone go to Settings, scroll down to Security, and select Unknown sources. Selecting this option will allow the installation of apps outside of the Google Play store. Depending on the device, you can also choose to be warned before installing harmful apps. This can be enabled by selecting the Verify apps option in the Security settings. 3

4 2d. Download the APK file. While downloading do not go to other websites or download other apps. 2e. Go to your App drawer and tap Downloads (Screen 1). Here you will find the file you just downloaded (Screen 2). Open the file and install the app (Screen 3). 2f. Once you have finished installing the mobile app, go back to Settings, scroll down to Security, and deselect Unknown sources (see step 2c). Deselecting this option will once again prevent the installation of apps outside of the Google Play store. Using the app Important: please note that when using the app for the first time, the app must be opened while your phone has a cellular or Wi-Fi connection so that the most recent database of nutrition interventions can be loaded into the app. Opening the app for the first time without an internet connection will result in the app not containing any interventions and may cause it to crash. We recommend opening the app immediately after downloading to ensure the database is imported correctly. 3. When opening the mobile app for the first time, the introductory screen will appear as shown at the right. From here you may immediately start browsing or go directly to the Help section which provides detailed information on what content is included in the mobile app and how to navigate the mobile app. 4. Familiarize yourself with the app by exploring. Touch any and all navigation buttons; don't worry, you can t break it. At any time you can go to the Help section by tapping on the Help icon in the lower left hand corner of the screen. 4

In addition to offline use, try to open and/or use the app whenever you have an internet connection; preferably at least once a week or whenever you have internet access if you aren't connected for longer than a week. This allows the mobile app to check for updates. 5. Use the mobile app as often as you can for as long as you like, until 15 November It is recommended that the app be used as frequently as possible for the full month if possible, before completing the survey, so that you become familiar with the navigation and can answer questions about frequency of usage. 6.
