2 Ⅰ. About Using the Network from Research Rooms etc. 1.About Installing New Wiring and Replacing the Wiring Specially applying is not required if you have the wiring in the room diverged by HUB or rooter. In the case of replacing the wiring at the outside of the room, however, please necessarily consult with the Account Section or ICT Room Management Office. When you ask traders, you are required to get the permission of the network administrator. If you replace the wiring without the permission, the network will suffer cruelly from many troubles. 2.About Setting the Network (1) ICT Room Management Office gives a fixed IP address to each machine. Please ask RISO by . RISO: umother@econ.tohoku.ac.jp * If you send an to the above address, it is to reach the network administrator as well as staffs in RISO. Also you can choose either fixed IP address or DHCP when you apply for using a note PC. But please use it only after registration. (2)New machines and network printers or so are set to automatically access to the network and connect to it by default, but please make sure that you have applied for using them. If you haven t, your use shall be limited. Especially you cannot use the DHCP server of unregistered machine from your research room. (3)The procedure of setting is as follows; IP address: What you received after applying Subnet mask: Gateway: WINS Primary: Secondary: DNS: Host name: Please freely choose so as not to be the same to others. 3 (4)Please register MAC address(, synonym of Ethernet address and Physical address ). Please be sure to register the MAC address. If you don t, the machine is thought to be illegally connected. There is a manual to check the MAC address. <E026> (5)Please apply for the ID and password of each server by directly visiting ICT Room Management Office or by (umother@econ.tohoku.ac.jp). (6)Please understand we do not permit setting up such a server as mail server and WWW server as a rule. Then, please use the wireless LAN as long as it is ensured the security. In principle, please use it only in your research room. 3.In Connecting 1) Whenever you use the Internet, please make sure that you use the following proxy server. Proxy server: mercury.econ.tohoku.ac.jp Port: 3128 (2)Please be careful of the security well when you share a file and a printer on the network. If you don t especially need, I recommend you not to share them because of the security problem. (3)Please be sure to update OS and software and connect after checking the security. * Especially, please be careful when you re-install and recovery OS. Because it is possible that your machine will be immediately suffered from virus when you recover the OS of the former version, you need to download and install patch or so on the hard disk. * Be sure to install a piece of anti-virus software. Then please keep paying attention to the limit of the license when the software is pre-installed. * The Graduate School has bought the license for anti-virus software. So please apply to RISO (umother@econ.tohoku.ac.jp) if you hope to use it. (4)You are forbidden using file exchange software of P2P chain software which has many 3

4 problems on the copyrights and security. We would like you to cooperate. (5)We issue Network News by for the newest information on security at any time and please check it. Ⅱ. About Making a Homepage (1) Please make and update a teacher s homepage by yourself. We are ready to give you advice as long as you want when you ask traders or so. Please refer to the manuals on the web to set up directory and so on. <E051> (2)After you making a homepage, please let RISO (umother@econ.tohoku.ac.jp) know about it because we will link it to the homepage of the Graduate School of Economics and Management. The application form is on the site of RISO. <RISO s Homepage> (3)Please apply to RISO (umother@econ.tohoku.ac.jp) if you hope to apply for linking related organizations to the homepage of the Graduate School of Economics and Management. About Using VPN etc. (1)You can use the VPN of the Graduate School of Economics and Management in order to use internal database or so from outside of the university. Please ask to RISO (umother@econ.tohoku.ac.jp) if you want to know how to use and set up it. But we do 4

5 not deal with ADSL. (2)Some circuits at home cannot be not necessarily used. In the case, please ask the above address. Ⅳ. Effective Use of Mailing System (1) If you want to make use of mailing list for seminars and research meetings, we wish the teacher would apply to by or to directly visit ICT Room Management Office. If you want to change the setting, please the above address. If you are a teacher, please apply to RISO (umother@econ.tohoku.ac.jp). (2)We will support you to forward s during a long official trip and to check them at home. Please apply to RISO. (3)Relating to using WEB mail, the Graduate School of Economics and Management makes use of the service of the system called Squirrel Mail with which you can read and write s on the web. If you use this system, you can send and receive s of the Graduate School when you attend a meeting and when you are overseas on business, as long as you are in the situation connecting to the Internet. <ex> To easily send and receive s at the place on official trip (even overseas) with your own note PC To send and receive s with the note PC at the place on business trip To use temporary other PC because your PC in common use is out of order. To check s at home. While it is convenient, sometimes it makes troubles to network if the password is not administrated well and the setting of is not good. 6 (4)Please apply to ICT Room Management Office when you need a bulletin board for your lectures or so. We provide you the system in which you can read and write by portable phone, etc. Because it takes much time, please apply for setting it so as to give us enough time. Ⅴ. About Campus Community Through Campus Community, you can issue various questionnaires and inform useful information such as cancelled lectures to support campus life on the board. In addition, it has been added to the function not only to make a group at every seminar or committee but also to share questionnaires, notices and files between the closed group members since the academic year of It is much easier to use information because you can access to it by PC and portable phone at the outside of the Graduate School. (1) Post a notice on the bulletin board You can post a notice such as cancelled lectures or so to your students. Your students will check the notice with a portable phone or a PC. (2) Questionnaire You can issue a questionnaire to your students. They will answer it with portable phone or PC. It is possible to set in the way that users cannot see the notice before they answer the questionnaire. (3)Using in a group You can make a group as one unit of seminar or committee, and you can also post a notice, issue a questionnaire and share a file in a group. Please try to use the service once. 7 Ⅵ. About Software and Hardware (1)Because of any problems on copyright, we do not lend a software application nor make a copy of CDs. (2)We are ready to help you download and install freeware and each driver, and please call #6325 or send an to RISO (umother@econ.tohoku.ac.jp). (3)The Graduate School of Economics and Management has several licenses of virus detection software. So please apply for using it to RISO (umother@econ.tohoku.ac.jp). But, installing is limited only on the public computers for teachers of the Graduate School. If you hope to use two more machines, or when you buy a new PC, we would like you to buy anti-virus software for yourself as much as possible. (4)If you think, I wonder if it is out of order, please let ICT Room Management Office know about that. In this case, please consult with us early, taking account into the number of RISO s staffs. Then we will examine hardware. If it is not the cause, we may exchange one of the parts. Sometimes by doing so, the problem is solved. Ⅶ. About Using the ICT Room (1)Using rules are written on the handbook of students. If you need, please read them. (2) Using time as follows: Mondays 10:00-20:00 Tuesdays-Fridays 9:00-20:00 To use the Room, you are required to have your own ID and password. Please apply for them at ICT Room Management Office. (3)If you use ICT Room for your lectures and seminars, please make a reservation in advance (by before one week as much as possible) on the web. The URL is as follows: <For Reservation > 7

(4) If you use the Room except working hours, please ask RISO by . Ⅷ. About Remote Log-in Because Telnet had a security problem on remote log-in, we do not give the service right now. Instead of it, please use SSH (Secure Shell). RISO recommend PuTTY as SSH client you can use with Windows. Also please use WinSCP to send and receive files. You can get the manual from the following site: <E048>, <E050> Ⅸ. About Using the Network in Seminar Rooms You can use the wired/wireless LAN in each seminar room. When you use the wireless LAN, sometimes you are required to login with your ID and password. So please prepare for them in advance. The ID and password are given if you have applied for using the wireless LAN. Ⅹ. About Using the Network in Lecture Halls You can use both the wired/wireless LAN and the furnished projector in #1-3 Rooms of the Lecture Hall. Then you are able to use the network with the furnished Windows machine. In addition, you can connect your note PC to the network in each Lecture Hall. Please refer to each manual at each Lecture Hall. 8
