Access your University on your Windows Computer Introduction The University of South Wales offers all enrolled students the use of a free personal account which up until now has only been available via Unilife, but can now be accessed using your mobile device. Your account includes a calendar, notes and an address book to organise and store your contacts, and provides more than 30Gb of storage space. on your Windows Computer How to... Access your University UNI - WINDOWS Step 1/1 - Setting Up Your Windows Computer To use your University on your Windows computer you first need to configure the device to connect to the University servers. As the University student is run by Google, configuring the University system is similar to setting up a Gmail account. Alternative Address In addition to your primary University , you can send and receive via an alternative [email protected] address. Please see our How To... Use Your Alternative guide to assist you in setting up your device. documents/download/28/ The example pictures in the following pages are using Microsoft Outlook 2010 installed on Windows 7, but can be easily configured for use with other devices as long as they support the IMAP protocol, see page 8 for server details. NOTE It is your responsibility to get your computer connected to a internet service provider. If you are experiencing difficulties, your service provider website or support service will be able to assist in getting your Windows computer connected. 1
2 On your Windows computer, click on the Start Menu, then All Programs, then Microsoft Office Click on Microsoft Outlook
3 Microsoft Outlook 2010 will now display a setup wizard on screen, click on Next to start. You will now be asked whether you would like to setup/configure an account, select the Yes radio button, and then select Next to continue. 3
4 Upon selecting Continue, the wizard will ask you to enter account information, do not enter anything at this point, and select the Manually configure server settings or additional server types radio button instead, click on Next to continue. The wizard will now ask you to choose which service you wish to setup, select Internet , then click on Next to continue. 4
5 You will now be prompted to enter some of the mail server details, please enter the following information. Your Name: Enter your name Address: Enter your University address (i.e: Account type: IMAP Incoming mail server: imap.gmail.com Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com Username: Enter your University address (i.e: Password: Enter your current University password. Select More Settings... to continue. HINT Placing a tick in the Remember Password box will allow Outlook to remember your password. 5
6 The More Settings... box will now appear, click on the Advanced tab, and enter the following information. Incoming server (IMAP): 993 Use the following type of encrypted connection : SSL Outgoing server (STMP): 465 Use the following type of encrypted connection : SSL IMPORTANT Click on the drop-down menu and select SSL before typing in the incoming and outgoing port numbers, the incoming port (IMAP) number will likely change to 993 by default, but the outgoing server (SMTP) will default to port 25, please delete and type in 465. Then select the Outgoing Server tab, and enter the following settings. Place a tick in the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication tickbox. Select the Log on using radio box. Username: Enter your University address (i.e: @students.southwales.ac.uk) Password: Enter your current University password. HINT Placing a tick in the Remember Password box will allow Outlook to remember your password. Select OK to proceed. 6
7 Microsoft Outlook 2010 will now attempt to send a test message to confirm the mail server settings have been setup correctly. Select Close to finish, Microsoft Outlook 2010 should now open, and display your University . You can now send / receive your University on your Windows computer. 7
8 For users who have devices other than ios, Android, Blackberry, Macintosh OS X or Microsoft Mobile, the University IMAP settings are as follows. INCOMING Server address : imap.gmail.com Port : 993 Security type : (SSL) always OUTGOING Server address : smtp.gmail.com Port : 465 Security type : (SSL) always Other University guides available.
