1 Trident Connector Family Offers the Versatility and Reliability Required in Industrial & Transportation Applications Industrial and transportation applications require robust connections with superior performance characteristics so as to remain connected and prevent failure during operation. Because of the many uses within these arenas, connectors must also be diverse and versatile in order to suit a variety of application-specific criteria. In the 1960s, ITT Interconnect Solutions developed the Trident circular connector product line, which was derived from the MIL-C specification. The Trident connector family has since been expanded to include rectangular plastic connectors; as well as circular metal and plastic connectors in sealed, unsealed, and shielded metal versions. The Trident connectors are available in a variety of layouts ranging from 2 to 48 pins, using signal and mixed layouts in combination with power contacts. Custom layouts are also available upon request. Trident connector family The core of the Trident product line is the stamped and formed T2P crimp contact, available in standard (13-amp) and high-conductivity (16-amp) versions. The stamped contacts are manufactured to precise tolerances, while offering improved performance and strain relief. Versatility is further realized in the other offered contact options including machined crimp for durability in applications with higher mating cycles, solder Page 1 of 5

2 cups for medium volume and prototype applications, PCB for board level connections, and coaxial contacts. In addition to the contact options, other key design elements include a new stainless steel clip with three prongs, resulting in increased contact retention forces, reduced insertion force, improved contact alignment, and simple contact disassembly. 3 The stainless steel three-prong clip provides enhanced features over comparable connectors available on the market All of these features were added to provide the customer with quick and seamless operation. In practice, improvements in the contact alignment result in secure connector mating while reduced insertion forces allow for both ease of assembly and disassembly, both in terms of the connector itself and in terms of harnessing. The increased contact retention forces provided by the threepronged clip further enhance reliability. Additionally, the new shape and the stability of the steel prongs allows for replaceability of the contacts in both the Neptune and Neptune metal connectors. The connector is available with five single-row contact arrangements and the mating plug accepts all Trident signal crimp socket contacts. 4 Snap Together The snap together rectangular plastic connector system is ideal for circuit boards and internal wiring due to ease of assembly and removal of equipment (such as fans, motors, and transformers). The cost-effective connector features integrally-molded latches & connector polarization and can employ stamped or machined contacts. Available with membrane wire seals that meet IP67 requirements, these connectors feature stainless steel bayonet pins and the plugs are available with either high-strength metal or corrosion-resistant plastic coupling rings. 5 The Trident Slimline, Snap Together, Ringlock, and Neptune Metal connectors are all certified to meet North American UL approvals, while the Neptune Metal connectors also meet Canada s CSA specifications. The design benefits of the Trident connectors are not limited to their superior performance features. The connectors in the Trident product line are all 100% intermateable and interchangeable with existing ITT contacts. This affords customers much more flexibility in terms of mixing contacts to best suit their application criteria. Being able to mix contacts also allows end users to utilize contacts they currently have in stock, providing complete backwards compatibility. Existing Trident crimp tooling and all extraction tools fully support the new design. To achieve the best performance in terms of contact fit and alignment, ITT recommends updating all crimp tooling for the AWG contacts. This consistency in tooling affords customers significant time and cost savings while allowing a seamless transition to the new contacts. While the Trident connectors are ideally suited for industrial and transportation applications, including power supplies, electrical controls, motion control and industrial automation; harnessing and cabins, vehicle accessories, dashboard interfaces and transmissions, the connector family is expanding into other markets as well. Due to the contact configurations, alignment, specifications, versatility, and stability, the Trident contacts may be implemented into other connector systems where higher packaging density is required. These additional connector systems include vending machines and PCB s in dashboards, along with possible applications in defense and mass transit applications.
