1 MEDICAL ASSISTING ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE DEGREE ADMINISTRATIVE MEDICAL ASSISTING CERTIFICATE CLINICAL MEDICAL ASSISTING CERTIFICATE Overview of program being proposed. Criteria A: Mission Background and Rationale The role of the Medical Assistant has been expanded significantly over that last 10 years. The Medical Assistant is expected to possess greater skills and flexibility of roles. The job analysis using the DACUM process found that a wide range of skills and a broad understanding of ambulatory medical care are required for the Medical Assistant to function effectively. Bringing the Medical Assistant curriculum in line with the State requirements for certification is part of the TAACCF Grant. Catalog Description MEDICAL ASSISTING ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE DEGREE is designed around the Model Curriculum established by the California Community Colleges Chancellor s Office for preparation for the State Exam for Medical Assistants (CCBMA). This program provides the students with the opportunity to develop the necessary administrative and clinical skills needed to be an effective medical assistant. Upon completion of the program students can be employed in various healthcare agencies. Program Requirements (see Appendix) Program Goals General Education Pattern: 29 units Core Courses: 9 units Administrative Courses: 11.5 units Clinical Courses: 11.5 The student recognizes the need to become lifelong learner in order to keep current in healthcare issues related to the Medical Assistant Role. 80% of students will pass the state exam.

2 Labor Market information detail. Criteria B: Need Enrollment and Completer Projections Students would enroll with an application process through counseling. There is an estimated enrollment of 40 students in Program/Certificates annually with completion of either the Program and/or the certificates. This program would be offered to all of the Cerro Coso Community College Campuses. Similar Programs There are no other programs in our service area. Labor Market Information Health Careers Occupation Report Medical Assisting Industry Report: According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, Medical Assisting is one of the nation's fastest growing careers with an expected growth of 34% between 2012 and Approximately 62 percent of medical assistants work in physician offices; 13 percent work in public and private hospitals including inpatient and outpatient facilities; 11 percent work in other health practitioner settings, such as chiropractor's and optometrist's offices. Employer Survey This Program is in response to community needs in both the IWV and ESCC areas. This Program is being funded through the TAAACCCT Grant. Employer Relationship We have Advisory Groups in both the IWV and ESCC areas that are representative of the industry and employers in the areas. Members of Advisory Committee Debi Earls, Susan Batchelder, Kathleen Aleo, Sharon Brown, Yvette Matthiessen, Royce Cornett, Ruby Allen, Debbie Booth, Sandy Gilliam, Annette Hodgins, JD Wright, Amy Fuller Recommendations of Advisory Committee Advisory Groups from both ESCC and IWV requested a MA program to provide a more structured base for their Medical Assistants. The increased need for Medical Assistants within the communities and industry is the driving force behind this revision and creation of the Medical Assisting Program at Cerro Coso Community College.
