2 Medical Assisting (Clock Hour Program) The Medical Assisting program is a 1,300 clock hour program which provides the knowledge and skills to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Medical Assistant necessary to gain entry-level employment in a health care setting. The Medical Assisting Program is a one-year (starting in August of each year) vocational program which consists of daytime classes during the fall, spring, and first summer semesters and an externship in a physician s office during the second summer semester (a six weeks practicum). Upon completion of the program, students will receive Occupational Completion Point certificates in Basic Healthcare Worker (90 hours); Medical Office Receptionist (100 hours); Phlebotomist, MA (75 hours); EKG Aide, MA (75 hours); Medical Assistant 1, 2, and 3 (960 hours) as per the Florida Department of Education Frameworks. 3 Clinical Skills: Take and record vital signs and blood pressure Give injections Draw blood for laboratory analysis (venipuncture) Assist the physician with physical examinations and minor surgical and medical procedures Teach patients treatment regimens Additionally, the medical assistant will possess appropriate communication and interpersonal skills required by medical personnel, will understand legal and ethical responsibilities of healthcare workers, and will demonstrate knowledge of blood-borne diseases including HIV and hepatitis. The medical assistant is computer literate and has competent math skills required to work in a physician s office. He or she will also be aware and practice proper methods of infection control required by OSHA. The medical assisting graduate will be CPR certified. Q: What are other occupations in this career? 4 Q: What are the testing requirements? TABE scores of 10 or higher in the categories of Reading, Mathematics, and Language are required for successful completion of the program. If a student scores less than the minimum required score, the student will be advised for self-remediation or tutoring services. The TABE is required for entry into a program; however, the test is an exit requirement. This means that a student who does not achieve the minimum required score will not receive credit for the OCP or the certificate, until the TABE score is met. TABE scores are valid for a period of two years. 5 FINANCIAL AID Students requiring financial assistance are directed to the Office Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs (OFA & VA) (850) for information on numerous grants, and scholarships available. Short-term loads are available at registration. Inquiries should be directed to the Student Affairs Office on the Warrington Campus. Students needing assistance for an education are encouraged to seek every avenue of financial aid available for that purpose. Financial counseling, as well as help with the application process, is available.
