2 STANDARD COLLEGE HISTORICAL BACKGROUND STANDARD HEALTHCARE SERVICES INC., COLLEGE OF NURSING (STANDARD COL- LEGE) IS A PRIVATELY OWNED INSTITUTION LOCATED IN FALLS CHURCH, VIRGINIA, THAT IS DEDICATED TO EXCELLENCE IN ALL AREAS OF NURSING EDUCATION AND PRACTICE. STANDARD HEALTHCARE SERVICES INC., COLLEGE OF NURSING WAS FOUNDED IN 2004 BY ISIBOR JOY NOSEGBE A REGISTERED NURSE AND A CERTIFIED LE- GAL NURSE CONSULTANT WHO CURRENTLY SERVES AS THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF- FICER OF THE INSTITUTION. THE STANDARD HEALTHCARE SERVICES INC., COLLEGE OF NURSING (STANDARD COLLEGE) PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM WAS ESTABLISHED AS A STAND-ALONE PRE- LICENSURE PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM IN 2007, WHEN THE FIRST CLASS WAS AD- MITTED. STANDARD COLLEGE PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM HAS PRIDED ITSELF ON MEETING THE REGIONAL HEALTHCARE NEEDS OF THE METROPOLITAN DC AREA THROUGH PROVIDING PERSONALIZED, HIGH-QUALITY EDUCATION FROM QUALIFIED, DEDICATED AND SUPPORTIVE FACULTY, STAFF AND ADMINISTRATION. THE ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE IN NURSING (LPN TO RN TRANSITION PROGRAM) WAS APPROVED BY THE VIRGINIA BOARD OF NURSING IN MAY THE PRACTICAL NURSING AND THE RN PROGRAM HAVE MAINTAINED A NCLEX PASS RATE GREATER THAN 90%. 3 PHILOSOPHY MISSION STATEMENT The STANDARD HEALTHCARE SERVICES, INC. COLLEGE OF NURSING (Standard College) mission is to provide the classroom instruction and clinical nursing skills development necessary for the students to become competent Licensed Nurses in the healthcare field. The purpose of Standard College Nursing Program is to provide a quality education in a positive and affirming learning environment. Standard College strives to ensure the development of the skills, abilities, attitudes, habits and ethics that will result in a satisfying personal and professional life as a Licensed Nurse. VISION The STANDARD COLLEGE of Nursing will be a hallmark Nursing Education Program, providing high quality nursing education that efficiently and effectively meets the needs of the students and the regional community. GOALS 1. Participate fully in the PN/RN programs such that our mission, vision, goals and outcomes are in alignment with the larger goals of STANDARD COLLEGE. 2. Develop faculty as a community of healthcare professionals who are dedicated to excellence in teaching, scholarly activities, practice, leadership and professional community service. 3. Deliver high quality education to students engaged in comprehensive programs of learning that emphasizes caring, critical thinking, problem solving, communication and ethical decisionmaking. We believe that: 1. The nurse is an important part of the healthcare and nursing team. 2. An advisory committee is essential for involvement in guiding and directing the implementation and evaluation of our nursing program. 3. Community resources should be integrally involved in the implementation of this nursing program. 4. The nurse should be educated in an organized and cohesive educational program based on sound nursing theory. 5. The nursing education curriculum shall include classroom, laboratory and supervised clinical experiences provided in accordance with the law. 6. The nursing education curriculum shall be planned to include a logical sequence and continuity in the learning process for adult learners. 7. The nursing education curriculum shall utilize clinical facilities in which the student will have the opportunity to work with equipment and procedures that are used in healthcare facilities. 8. The student will have the competencies to obtain licensure as a practical nurse or registered nurse, to provide competent nursing care to patient and their families and to subsequently become employed in the healthcare field as a licensed nurse. 3

4 PROGRAMS Practical Nursing Program (PN/VN) Program Description STANDARD COLLEGE Practical Nursing Program utilizes a competency-based approach in the performance of the skills necessary for employment as a Licensed Practical Nurse in a healthcare environment. In addition to theoretical knowledge, this program includes practical application of skills in a variety of clinical settings. Curriculum Overview The Practical Nursing Education Program curriculum prepares students for generalist positions in practical nursing practice. Graduates are able to provide nursing care across the lifespan to culturally diverse individuals and groups. STANDARD COLLEGE Practical Nursing Program curriculum includes general education core and required support courses along with nursing course work consisting of classroom, laboratory, and clinical practice experiences. Upon successful completion, graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN. The practical nursing diploma provides flexibility in career choices as well as a foundation for continued formal study in additional types of nursing programs. Alumni will have employment opportunities in hospitals, health departments, correctional facilities, home health, long-term care, educational institutions, and international nursing. The STANDARD COLLEGE Practical Nursing Program is approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing and is certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). Program Outcomes 1. Upon completion of the Practical Nursing Program, graduates will be able to: 2. Provide quality professional nursing care based on a combination of theoretical and empirical knowledge from nursing, physical and social sciences, and life experiences. 3. Use evidence-based practice as the basis for clinically competent nursing care. 4. Communicate effectively using various means in a variety of roles and settings. 5. Provide optimal health care to diverse individuals, families, groups and communities through collaboration with members of the health care team. 6. Demonstrate intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and motivations toward life-long learning. 7. Influence positively the quality of nursing, healthcare using leadership skills, management, and scientific and theoretical concepts. 8. Demonstrate legally and ethically accountable nursing care skills for patients and their families. 9. Become a responsible member of the nursing profession. Program Components The Practical Nursing Education Program at Standard Healthcare Services Inc. School of Nursing consists of 1,314 contact hours conducted over a 12 month/50 week period full time or 16 month/64 week period part time. Class/Skills Lab Hours = Clinical Hours = 914 hours 400 hours 1,314 hours Classroom and skills lab instruction shall take place at the campus of Standard College at 1073 West Broad Street, Suite 201, Falls Church, VA

5 LPN To RN TRANSITION PROGRAM Program Overview Standard College trains and educates students for careers in the healthcare field as Registered Nurses in the LPN to RN Transition Program. Pending successful completion of the requirements of this program and the NCLEX-RN, graduate will obtain employment as a Registered Nurse. Program Description The Standard College LPN to RN Transition Program utilizes a competency-based and evidence-based approach in the performance of the skills necessary for employment as a Registered Nurse in a healthcare environment. In addition to theoretical knowledge, this program includes practical application of skills and concepts in a variety of clinical settings. Program Objectives At the conclusion of the Standard College LPN to RN Transition Program, the student will be able to: 1. Perform entry-level skills of a Registered Nurse competently according to applicable standards of practice. 2. Utilize the nursing process in implementing patient care. 3. Demonstrate appropriate professional behaviors of a Registered Nurse. 4. Complete the NCLEX-RN exam with a passing score. 5. Obtain employment as a Registered Nurse. 5

6 Curriculum Overview The LPN to RN Transition Program curriculum prepares students for entry-level Associate Degree positions in Registered Nursing practice. Graduates are able to provide nursing care across the lifespan to culturally diverse individuals and groups. The LPN to RN Transition Program curriculum covers general education core that includes concepts from natural sciences; social sciences; required support courses; along with nursing course work consisting of classroom, laboratory, and clinical practice experiences. The students are taught and will be able to perform a comprehensive nursing assessment that includes extensive data collection across the lifespan in a variety of settings addressing anticipated changes in patient conditions as well as emerging changes in a patient s health status; recognition of alterations to previous patient conditions; synthesizing the biological, psychological and social aspects of the patient s condition; evaluation of the effectiveness and impact of nursing care and the need to communicate and consult with other health team members; planning for nursing interventions and evaluating the need for different interventions for individuals, group and communities; use of a broad and complete analysis to make independent decisions and nursing diagnosis. The Associate in Applied Science Degree in Nursing provides flexibility in career choices as well as a foundation for continued formal study in additional types of nursing programs. Faculty members are assigned to teach course content and/or clinical practicum based on their area of expertise. Faculty assignments allow for maximum student receipt of knowledge, skills, abilities and professional values that ultimately promote their effective participation in society, both personally and professionally. Of note, is the fact that a number of faculty members started their careers as entry- level healthcare professionals and progressed along a sequential clinical ladder over time from Nurse Aide to LPN, to RN to having a Bachelor s Degree or beyond and some hold certifications in their respective clinical areas and/or in related practice skills. By having had progressive educational experiences, the faculty member s ability to impart their experiences in a variety of healthcare delivery roles is an asset to the student s education. There is quite a diversity of clinical experience among faculty members. The faculty is involved in developing, implementing, and evaluating the curriculum for all programs to assure quality learning experiences are provided for all students. The faculty participates in the governance of the institution and the academic programs as well as in short-term institutional planning activities. 7
