1 Health IT Certificate Series Introduction According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be a shortfall of Health IT workers through 2015 and beyond. These workers will be in great demand as hospitals, physician offices and other health providers move to an electronic health record system. The occupational outlook is expected to increase faster than average through The American Society of Health Informatics Managers ( has created a new national certification for healthcare and IT workers who wish to be a part of the migration toward completely electronic health systems, called the Certified Health Informatics Systems Professional. Passing this national exam shows employers you have the skills in both IT and healthcare to assist in the project planning, programming, implementation and/or training of workers to deploy the electronic health systems. Collin College is offering customized a training certificate series that has been developed for the healthcare and IT professionals that are interested in gaining the knowledge to become certified and work in the field of. Each student will meet with the program director to review previous experience and determine specific course needs. Students are eligible and encouraged to take the CompTIA A+ certification exam upon completion of this class. Gain technical competency in networking administration and support. Hands-on tasks using MS SQL Server to create SQL statements for retrieving and modifying data in relational databases. Introduction to the fundamentals of healthcare systems including medical terminology, legal aspects, revenue cycle and reimbursement policies, regulating agencies and legislation. Will include additional topics that affect the US healthcare industry. Examine the ethical and legal responsibilities for healthcare professionals and discuss the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Topics covered include confidentiality, ethics, healthcare legislation and HIPAA privacy regulations, which are the major focus of most healthcare providers. Practice the principles of insurance and reimbursement processing. Implement the assigning and reporting of codes for diagnoses, procedures and services. Complete claims for inpatient, outpatient, emergency department and physician office encounters. Gain the fundamental knowledge about the medical coding processes utilized in US healthcare. Students will learn the basic concepts of ICD-9, CPT and HCPCS and how these codes impact reimbursement. Students will also learn how coding integrates into the EMR systems and how ICD-10 will impact the transition to EMR. Examine the emerging technology of the Electronic Health Record through conceptual theory and hands-on application needed to work in today's medical office. Learn basic programming using Visual Basic and C++. Discover commonalities in programming logic and become familiar with each language from coding and compiling to running and executing. Learn the skills needed to ensure the safety and security of sensitive medical documentation as it is transitioned into an electronic format. Students will learn how to secure computer-based resources and identify important concepts, cost considerations and interrelationships of security controls. 1. Learn to manage competing priorities, practice how to quantify problems and accomplish the results you expect from your healthcare projects. 1. Create an effective problem statement that is relevant to stakeholders 2. Identify and validate performance measures 3. Identify what changes must be targeted and achieved 4. Define a project scope constrained by the above Utilize IT concepts and knowledge to build EMR platform in a virtual system and ensure security measures are in place to protect data. Utilize EMR concepts and knowledge to deploy documents onto the EMR system and manipulate data to create various reports. 1.
