2 ENGAGING IN LIFELONG LEARNING WELCOME Welcome to the Specialty Society Board Summit on Lifelong Learning. We are pleased to bring together the Specialty Societies and ABMS Member Boards for a discussion on how we can work together more effectively to support quality improvement by practicing physicians. This event builds upon a September 2013 meeting between leaders from the ABMS Member Boards and CMSS Specialty Societies. This year, ABMS and CMSS saw an opportunity to broaden our discussion to include other Specialty Societies. We look forward to working with you to help practicing physicians find meaningful activities that will support their learning and improve the care they provide. 4 SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES Alejandro Aparicio, MD, FACP, Director, Division of Continuing Physician Professional Development, American Medical Association Prior to arriving at AMA in 2004, Dr. Aparicio was Director of Medical Education and Associate Medical Director at a large teaching hospital. He has contributed to continuing medical education (CME) at hospital/hospital systems, county/state/ national professional societies, and a medical school. A past President of the Illinois Geriatrics Society, Illinois Medical Directors Association, and Illinois Alliance for CME, Dr. Aparicio has served, or serves, on boards of a college of nursing, the largest hospital system in Illinois, and several foundations. He was a Presidential appointee to the 2005 White House Conference on Aging Policy Committee and co-chaired its Healthcare Subcommittee. Active at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, he holds appointments as Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine and Assistant Professor of Medical Education, and he volunteers at a free clinic in Chicago. Dr. Aparicio is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. Louis Diamond, MD, MBChB, FCP, (SA), FACP, FHIMSS, President, Quality in Health Care Advisory Group, LLC Dr. Diamond is an expert in the use of methodologies for measuring and improving quality. He also is involved in the development of public policy through projects focused on patient safety, health system financing, physician payment reform, quality measurement and reporting, and performance improvement. Dr. Diamond serves in numerous leadership roles, including Chair, Advisory Panel, Quality Improvement Education Roadmap, Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions; Member, Physician Engagement Committee, Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS); and Member, Executive Committee, Coalition for Supportive Care for Kidney Disease Patients. He previously held leadership positions at HIMSS, the Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement (PCPI), ehealth Initiative, Thomson Reuters Healthcare, Georgetown Department of Medicine, and DC General Hospital, and served as a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow. He is a graduate of the University of Cape Town Medical School, South Africa; Fellow, American College of Physicians; and Fellow, College of Physicians, South Africa. Thomas Granatir, Senior Vice President, Health Policy and External Relations, Mr. Granatir has 30 years of experience in health policy with a focus on quality and public accountability. He has worked in mental health policy for the state of Illinois; hospital policy for the American Hospital Association, the Health Research and Educational Trust, and The Joint Commission; long-term care policy for the Health and Medicine Policy Research Group; and population health management and public health for Humana Inc., both in the United States and in the United Kingdom. Mr. Granatir has served on the governing boards of the American Health Quality Association, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, Bridges to Excellence, the National Association of Health Data Organizations, the Alliance to Make U.S. Healthiest, and Henry Booth House. He has been an examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Program and served on the Roundtable on Ethnic and Racial Disparities of the Institute of Medicine (IOM). He was educated at the University of Chicago and taught in its Graduate Program in Health Policy and Administration. 4
5 Jill Healy, MS, Manager, Quality Improvement and Certification Initiatives, Division of Quality, American Academy of Pediatrics Ms. Healy oversees the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Portfolio Sponsorship Program focused on lifelong learning and continuous quality improvement (QI). She also provides QI guidance and consultation to internal and external stakeholders around project design and MOC standards. Prior to this role, Ms. Healy was the Program Manager for the AAP Quality Improvement Innovation Networks, where she managed several QI projects and other aspects of the network. Ms. Healy has worked at AAP for approximately 12 years. She received a BS in Community Health, Health Care Planning and Administration from the University of Illinois and an MS in Public Services Management, Health Care Administration from DePaul University. Mira B. Irons, MD, Senior Vice President, Academic Affairs, Dr. Irons oversees core ABMS programs for certification, continuing certification, and lifelong assessment as well as ABMS International programs. She serves on numerous professional societies; is an invited presenter at regional, national, and international teaching and medical events; and is a widely published researcher. Previously, Dr. Irons oversaw clinical operations of the Division of Genetics at Boston Children s Hospital. She has served on the faculties of Harvard Medical School and Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Irons is Board Certified in Pediatrics and in Medical Genetics and Genomics. Norman B. Kahn, Jr., MD, Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, Council of Medical Specialty Societies Dr. Kahn represents CMSS to several quality and performance measurement and improvement agencies, including the Ambulatory Quality Alliance, the National Committee on Quality Assurance, the National Priorities Partnership, the National Quality Forum, and PCPI. He has served on numerous boards and committees, including ACCME, where he chaired the Task Force that revised the Standards for Commercial Support of CME. CMSS represents 41 medical specialty societies with an aggregate membership of 750,000 physicians in the U.S. In 2010, CMSS adopted the CMSS Code for Interaction with Companies, establishing ethical standards for relationships between professional medical associations and industry. Mindi McKenna, PhD, MBA, CME Division Director, American Academy of Family Physicians Dr. McKenna oversees one of the U.S. s three CME credit systems and American Academy of Family Physician s (AAFP) provision of CME activities for thousands of health care professionals. She helps enhance patient outcomes through facilitation of health care professionals lifelong learning, practice assessment, and performance improvement. Dr. McKenna champions translation of research into education and practice, as well as more harmonized requirements for CME, licensure, and certification. Previously, she was Director of National Accounts and Organizational Development for a global pharmaceutical company; Vice President of Marketing for a global medical software company; and faculty in a health care leadership MBA program for physicians, nurse executives, and medical students. Dr. McKenna has authored two books and many peer-reviewed articles. She holds a BA in Industrial Psychology from Kansas University, an MBA from Webster University, and a PhD in Pharmaceutical Science Administration from the University of Missouri Kansas City. 5SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES

Moorhead, MD, MS, FACEP, Chair-Elect, Board of Directors, Dr. Moorhead has served on numerous ABMS Boards, including its MOC Committee, which he chaired from 2012 to A pioneer in Emergency Medicine training and advocacy, he is a Professor at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), in Portland. During a 30-year career in OHSU s Department of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Moorhead has held many positions, including Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency program and Department Chair. He is a former President of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM), the American College of Emergency Physicians, and the Oregon Medical Association. Dr. Moorhead is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine. David R. Nielsen, MD, FACS, President, Council of Medical Specialty Societies and Chair of Its CEO Component Group Dr. Nielsen also serves on the Executive Committee of the PCPI, as the Chair of the PCPI Foundation Board, and a member of the PCPI Finance and Governance subcommittees. For the past 12 years, Dr. Nielsen has served as Executive Vice President and CEO of the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS), and is past Chair of the AAO-HNS s Board of Governors. He has been invited to present the AAO-HNS s quality initiatives to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, American s Health Insurance Plans, PCPI, American Association of Medical Society Executives, the National Committee for Quality Assurance, and many other national and state societies and academic institutions. He has written chapters on evidence-based performance measurement for several text books, and co-authored a white paper on share accountability. He currently oversees the AAO-HNS s education, research, health policy and advocacy, and member services activities for its 12,000 members. Lois Margaret Nora, MD, JD, MBA, President and Chief Executive Officer, Prior to joining ABMS in 2012, Dr. Nora served as Interim President and Dean of The Commonwealth Medical College in Scranton, Pennsylvania, one of the nation s newest medical schools. From , she served as President and Dean of Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University. Previously, Dr. Nora served as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Administration and Professor of Neurology at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, and Assistant Dean at Rush Medical College. Dr. Nora received her MD from Rush Medical College, a law degree and certificate in clinical Medical Ethics from the University of Chicago, and an MBA from the University of Kentucky Gatton College of Business and Economics. Her scholarly work focuses on issues in medical education, particularly the student environment, and issues at the intersection of law and medicine. She is Board Certified in Neurology. 6
7 David W. Price, MD, FAAFP, FACEHP, Director, ABMS Multi-Specialty Portfolio Approval Program, In addition to being a Board Certified Family Physician, and Director of the Portfolio Program, Dr. Price is Director of Medical Education and a physician researcher for the Colorado Permanente Medical Group, and a Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine. He has been President of the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians, and a delegate and committee member for AAFP. Dr. Price served as ABFM Board Chair, and Chair of the R&D and Examination MOC committees. A past Director of ACCME, he is currently Chair-Elect of the AAMC Section on Continuing Education and Improvement. Dr. Price served as the Director of Medical Education for The Permanente Federation. He has authored or co-authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications. Kate Regnier, MA, MBA, Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Operating Officer, Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education Ms. Regnier, who has been with ACCME since 1995, oversees the processes of accreditation and reaccreditation for national and international providers of CME; the recognition of the U.S. based state/territory medical societies as accreditors within their states, according to the Markers of Equivalency; and the joint accreditation of providers of interprofessional CME with colleague accreditors, the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Accreditation, and the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She also is responsible for the review of non U.S. accreditors for their Substantial Equivalency with the ACCME s system. As Chief Operating Officer, Ms. Regnier oversees ACCME s education, communications, monitoring, and business functions. She is also the primary staff liaison to the ACCME Board of Directors. Ms. Regnier received a BA in English from the College of the Holy Cross, an MA in English from Northwestern University, and an MBA from Loyola University of Chicago. Dana Richardson, RN, MHA, Director, Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement Operations and Strategic Initiatives, American Medical Association Ms. Richardson oversees several functions within PCPI, including strategic planning, governance activities, membership, education, and external communication. In addition, she is leading PCPI s contributions to the National Quality Registry Network, a multi-stakeholder initiative to advance the value of clinical registries, and the PCPI Quality Improvement Program. Prior to joining AMA, Ms. Richardson was the Vice President of Quality Initiatives for the Wisconsin Hospital Association, where she was responsible for implementing Board directives aimed at improving the quality and safety of care provided within Wisconsin hospitals, including the development of a voluntary public reporting program. She also worked for Dean Health System, a large, multi-specialty group practice, where she developed a physician-led QI program. She has 15 years of hospital staff nursing, with a focus on critical care. She holds a BS in Nursing and an MA in Business with a major in Health Service Administration from the University of Wisconsin, in Madison. 7SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES
