2 PROFESSIONAL CAREER (Continued) work and surveys. Overall, this course helped to provide a theoretical and methodological background for sociological investigation and covered the mainstream contemporary sociological currents Research Assistant at the University of Missouri-Columbia, Department of Rural Sociology Under the scientific guidance of Professor Daryl Hobbs, Director of the Office of Socioeconomic Data Analysis (OSEDA), University of Missouri-Columbia, and Professor J. Kenneth Benson, Chairman of the Sociology Department of the University of Missouri-Columbia. This research focused on the role and impact of social services in rural communities and an understanding of farmers' behavior toward such social services in the United States Research at the Senegalese Institute for Agricultural Research (ISRA) at Kolda. Fieldwork for a Master's thesis in two villages of the upper Casamance (Senegal). This study dealt with the relationship between subsistence and commercial farming in a cotton production zone. A particular analysis of the impact of cotton production as a cash crop on food and livestock production is constructed. Overall, this study is a case of applied sociology to the problem of the articulation between agriculture and pastoralism in the Upper Casamance region in Senegal Course work for a Master's degree (including English training) Research at the "Centre National de Recherches Agronomiques" (CNRA) of Bambey, Senegal A focus on the migration phenomena in three villages (Senegal). The major objective of this research was an assessment of the social, economic and political impact of the migration toward urban areas on the family farm: Whether such migration trends have created a labor shortage within the family unit of production. Whether the development of extra farming activities (through the migration phenomena) has provided inputs in the family farm consumption (food supply). Overall, the research purpose was to identify existing patterns of migrations, and based on our findings, to formulate policy recommendations that could help stabilize the labor force in these regions, and meet the local needs of the populations.
3 Master's Thesis entitled: A Sociological Approach to Senegalese Peasant Systems of Production: A Case Study of Two Senegalese Villages of the Upper Casamance. (175 pp.) University of Missouri-Columbia. This thesis provides an in-depth analysis of farming systems in upper Casamance (from traditional patterns of farming to current agro-pastoral strategies). It discusses the policy of development agencies implementing rural development projects in the region: SODEFITEX (agency in charge of cotton production) and SODAGRI (agency promoting rice cultivation). The thesis concludes with policy recommendations aimed at reducing Senegal's dependency on food import by providing a balance between food production and cash oriented production. PREVIOUS WORK: Master's Thesis entitled: Methodologie et Technique de la Recherche Sociologique: Sur le Developpement du Secteur Agro-Industriel au Senegal. (108 pp.) University of Paris. This work provides a theoretical and methodological framework for conducting a sociological research. A careful documentation on the nature, function and orientation of the Senegalese agroindustrial sector is developed in the study. The social implications resulting from the process of agro-industrial development in Senegal are analyzed. The method of document study was used to structure this work. Ph.D. Dissertation entitled: Major Paradigms in Social Change and Development: A Critical Assessment and New Directions. (225 pp.) University of Missouri-Columbia. This dissertation attempts to examine the main currents of thought in development sociology and provide a critical analysis of this literature. One central theme of this study is the present crisis facing the sociology of development which I believe derives from the failure to link theories of development to practical problems of intervention and to formulate practical perspectives for social change and development. The purpose here will be to analyze the dimensions of the crisis and suggest ways of resolving it. Thus there is an attempt to develop a sociological framework which provides an analysis and synthesis of the major issues in development sociology, and to lay out the intellectual foundation upon which a case study on the nature of the state and its role in the process of social change and development in Senegal is carried out. Finally, the study calls for the transformative capacity of human action to bring about change and stresses the necessity of translating theoretical assumptions or knowledge into emancipatory action.
