The rising importance of autopoietic systems, systems capable of self-maintaining and self-creating, that is systems that can be described as self-casual, has created a renewed need for understanding the mutual effectively of human beings and social systems. My dissertation, begins with Luhmann s description of the autopoietic systems, particularly the structural coupling of social systems, attempts to elaborate the form that social systems have on human beings, or more precisely human psychic systems, as well as the potential for human beings to act towards social systems in a way that is not de facto defined by autopoietic processes of the system itself. In other words, this dissertation is the introduction for the construction of a manual for understanding how, despite possessing mutual interdependence, human beings are animated by social system as well as how human beings can act in, at least, semi-agented ways towards social systems. MASTERS THESIS General and Specific Definitions: A Network Study of Differential Association This research project analyzes the way differential association is currently being studied. It argues that the focus of the literature on the debate over peer influence between differential association and social control theory is not beneficial to either theory. Instead each theory needs to be explored individually and built upon. It also discusses the possibility of using network analysis to conceptually build upon differential association and applies one network technique, homophily, to a criminal network as a case study. This case study analyzes whether individuals in the network learn cognitive elements and techniques for specific crimes or crime in general. Hauman Page 4
