1 ACADEMIC ALERT # DATE: June, 2003 DECISION: College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) New Degree Program, Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Social Science Rationale The B.A. in Social Science was developed to meet the needs of recent high school graduates and community college students who are transferring to NLU, and addresses the trend that employers prefer people who are broadly educated in the social sciences. The new program utilizes existing faculty, many existing courses, and provides students with a coherent and integrated course of study in the social science disciplines. In terms of teaching certification and endorsements, the concentrations specified in the B.A. in Social Science correspond to the teaching requirements for the State of Illinois in secondary education. Students may opt to combine the B.A. in Social Science with one of the 30QH minor fields of study offered at NLU. 2 Description of the Program The B.A. in Social Science is administered by the Department of Psychology and Social Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences. The Social Science Program consists of required courses and electives that lead to the Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science. The B.A. in Social Science is offered to students who have not completed an AA degree, to students who hold and AA degree (cohort model) and to students who want to prepare for careers in teaching secondary education with concentrations in Economics, Political Science, Sociology/Anthropology and History. Admission Requirements The requirements for admission to the B.A. in Social Science Program, are identical to the admissions requirement for other CAS undergraduate programs. The B.A. in Social Science program requires a minimum of 69quarter hours or the equivalent in general education coursework for completion of the B.A. degree. This will include demonstration of competence in all ten core areas below and also include the specific courses or equivalent listed in areas four through ten. 1. Information and Technology Literacy Requirement is satisfied in English Composition I and II (with required word processing), and integrated throughout the student s academic experience in courses that require computer use. 2. Analytical Skills Requirement is satisfied in Logic and Effective Thinking, College Mathematics, and Basic Statistics or Statistical Methods, and integrated throughout student s academic experience in courses that emphasize critical thinking and analysis. 3. Ethics, Values, and Respect for Human Diversity Requirement is satisfied in Contemporary World Cultures, General Psychology, Introductory Social Science course, and U.S. History and Culture: , U.S. History and Culture: , or U.S. History and Culture: 1898 present, or upper division literature course, and integrated throughout student s academic experience in courses that focus on ethical values and social justice. 4. Communications English Composition I, English Composition II, Speech or Drama elective 5. Humanities Logic and Effective Thinking, English elective 6. Fine Arts Introduction to Art or Art elective, Introduction to Music or Music elective 7. Quantitative Reasoning College Mathematics, Basic Statistics or Statistical Methods 8. 6 Implementation This new program needs to be added to the next catalogue, , including description of the program and new courses. The new program needs to be marketed appropriately and information about this program needs to be disseminated to students who are potentially interested in studying the social science disciplines and/or are interested in becoming secondary education teachers. Therefore information needs to be in College of Arts and Sciences and National College of Education publications. -6-
