8 C H A P T E R 1 Getting started with SMART Ntebk sftware This chapter intrduces yu t SMART Ntebk cllabrative learning sftware and explains hw t get started with the sftware. Abut SMART Ntebk sftware In SMART Ntebk sftware, yu can create.ntebk files that include graphics, text, tables, lines, shapes, animatins and mre. Present yur file and keep yur class s attentin as yu mve and interact with these bjects. When yur class prvides cmments and suggestins, write their input n the page using digital ink. Yu can pen.ntebk files in SMART Ntebk sftware n a Windws, Mac r Linux cmputer. Yu can als exprt yur file in a variety f frmats, including HTML and PDF. Yu can install SMART Ntebk Tls as well as third-party add-ns t add special features t SMART Ntebk sftware. SMART Ntebk Tls include the fllwing: 3D Tls fr SMART Ntebk sftware Mixed Reality Tls fr SMART Dcument Camera SMART Ntebk Maths Tls Abut the ther SMART sftware n yur cmputer Yur cmputer might include the fllwing ther SMART sftware. SMART Prduct Drivers Yur interactive prduct detects cntact with its screen and sends each cntact pint, alng with Pen tl infrmatin, t the cnnected cmputer. When yu start SMART Ntebk sftware the first time, a tutrial file pens autmatically. Yu can read the cntents f this file t learn mre abut the sftware and the new features in the latest release. When yu ve finished, select File > New t create a new, blank file. When yu start the sftware subsequent times, a new, blank file pens autmatically. T pen the tutrial file, select Help > Tutrial. Navigating the user interface The SMART Ntebk sftware user interface cnsists f the fllwing cmpnents: Menu Tlbar 3

10 C H A P T E R 1 Getting started with SMART Ntebk sftware Tabs (Page Srter, Gallery, Attachments, Prperties, Add-ns and SMART Respnse ) Page area Menu The menu cntains all the cmmands yu can use t manipulate files and bjects in SMART Ntebk sftware. Tlbar The tlbar enables yu t select and use a variety f cmmands. The buttns n the tlbar are rganised in panels. Actins panel The Actins panel f the tlbar includes buttns that enable yu t brwse and make changes t.ntebk files: Plug-ins panel If yu install SMART Ntebk Tls such as SMART Ntebk Math Tls and SMART Respnse sftware, an additinal panel appears t the right f the Actins panel: Tls panel The Tls panel includes buttns that enable yu t create and wrk with basic bjects n pages: Cntextual panel When yu select ne f the buttns in the Tls panel, additinal buttns appear. Fr example, if yu select Pens, the fllwing additinal buttns appear: 4

11 C H A P T E R 1 Getting started with SMART Ntebk sftware Press the Pen Types buttn t select a pen type and then press ne f the line type buttns t write r draw digital ink in that line type. Yu can custmise a selected line type using the ptins in the Prperties tab and then save yur changes fr future use (see Saving tl settings n page 58). The three prperty selectrs beside the line type buttns enable yu t set the clur, thickness, style and transparency f digital ink. If yu click any f the ther buttns in the Tls panel, similar sets f additinal buttns appear. Custmising the tlbar Yu can add, remve and change the psitin f buttns n the tlbar by pressing Custmise the tlbar (see Custmising the tlbar n page 155). By default, the tlbar appears at the tp f the SMART Ntebk sftware windw. Hwever, yu can mve it t the bttm f the windw by pressing Mve tlbar t tp/bttm f windw. This is useful in situatins where yu r yur students can t reach the tlbar when it s at the tp f the windw. Page Srter The Page Srter displays all f the pages in the pen file as thumbnails and autmatically updates these thumbnails as yu change the cntents f the pages. Using the Page Srter, yu can d the fllwing: Display pages Create pages Clne pages Clear pages Delete pages Rename pages Rearrange pages Mve bjects frm ne page t anther Grup pages Opening the Page Srter T pen the Page Srter, press Page Srter. Custmising the Page Srter Yu can mve the Page Srter frm ne side f the SMART Ntebk sftware windw t the ther by pressing Mve Sidebar. 5

Gallery tab The Gallery tab cntains clip art, backgrunds, multimedia cntent, files and pages that yu can use in yur lessns, and displays preview images f this cntent. The Gallery tab als prvides access t ther nline resurces. Fr mre infrmatin, see Inserting cntent frm the Gallery n page 71. Yu can als include yur wn cntent and cntent frm ther teachers in yur schl in the Gallery tab (see Organising and sharing cntent using the Gallery n page 90). Opening the Gallery tab T pen the Gallery tab, press Gallery. Custmising the Gallery tab Yu can mve the Gallery tab frm ne side f the SMART Ntebk sftware windw t the ther by pressing Mve Sidebar. Depending n the bject that yu select, yu can change the fllwing: The clur, thickness and style f lines The transparency and fill effects f bjects The fnt type, size and style f text The animatin f bjects The Prperties tab displays nly the ptins that are available fr the bject yu select. Fr mre infrmatin n displaying and setting bject prperties in the Prperties tab, see Changing bjects prperties n page 55. The Prperties tab als includes a Page Recrding buttn. SMART Respnse tab The SMART Respnse tab is part f SMART Respnse sftware and is available nly if yu have SMART Respnse sftware installed. Page area The page area displays the cntents f a selected page in a file. This is the area f the page where yu create and wrk with bjects (see Creating basic bjects n page 31). 8

15 C H A P T E R 1 Getting started with SMART Ntebk sftware Viewing tl change ntificatins If yur SMART prduct has Tuch Recgnitin enabled, SMART Ntebk sftware displays tl change ntificatins when yu select a new hardware tl r change a tl s settings. Pens, the eraser and the muse are all hardware tls. Yu can als view tl change ntificatins when yu tuch the display with yur finger. Only sme SMART hardware prducts supprt Tuch Recgnitin. Fr mre infrmatin, refer t yur SMART hardware prduct s user guide. T view tl change ntificatins Using a hardware tl r yur finger, press the tlbar t select tl settings. A status bar appears under the tlbar and shws the active tl and settings. The status bar updates each time that yu select anther tl r setting. The status bar als appears when yu assign ink settings t the hardware pen using the Prperties tab (see Changing bjects prperties n page 55). Using gestures Yu can interact with bjects in SMART Ntebk sftware using the fllwing gestures (if supprted by yur interactive prduct): Swipe (left t right) Swipe (right t left) 9

If tw peple are using yur interactive prduct, pressing Und and Red affects the actins f bth users. T reverse the effect f the last actin Press Und. Yu can und an unlimited number f actins. T reinstate the last actin reversed with the Und cmmand Press Red. 11

After creating r pening a.ntebk file, yu can save it, print it and cmplete ther cmmn tasks. Creating files When yu start SMART Ntebk sftware fr the first time, a tutrial file pens autmatically. When yu start the sftware subsequent times, a new.ntebk file pens autmatically. Hwever, yu can create a new file at any time. T create a file Select File > New. If yu re wrking n a file with unsaved changes, a dialgue bx appears and prmpts yu t save the current file. Press Yes t save yur changes and then fllw the n-screen instructins. Opening files With SMART Ntebk 11 sftware, yu can pen the fllwing:.ntebk files (the default file frmat fr SMART Ntebk 9.5, 9.7, 10 and 11 sftware).xbk files (the default file frmat fr SMART Ntebk 8.x, 9.0 and 9.1 sftware) Once yu have pened a file, yu can save the file as a.ntebk file. The methd by which yu pen a file is the same fr all versins f SMART Ntebk sftware. 13

T I P Yu can pen a recently pened file by selecting the File menu and then selecting the file name. Saving files By default, SMART Ntebk sftware saves yur files in.ntebk frmat. Anyne with SMART Ntebk 9.5 r later sftware fr Windws perating systems, Mac OS X perating system sftware r Linux perating systems installed n his r her cmputer can pen a.ntebk file. T save a new file 1. Press Save. The Save As dialgue bx appears. 2. Brwse t where yu want t save the new file. 3. Type a name fr the file in the File name bx. 4. Press Save. T save an existing file Press Save. T save an existing file with a new name r lcatin 1. Select File > Save As. The Save As dialgue bx appears. 2. Brwse t where yu want t save the new file. 3. Type a name fr the file in the File name bx. 4. Press Save. 14

21 C H A P T E R 2 Creating and wrking with files Exprting files Yu can exprt yur.ntebk files t the fllwing frmats: Webpages Picture frmats BMP GIF JPEG PNG PwerPint PDF Interactive Whitebard Cmmn File Frmat (CFF) S SMART Ntebk sftware desn t include attachments when yu exprt files as picture files. T include attachments, yu must exprt yur file as either webpages r PDF (Adbe Reader 6.0 r later). SMART Ntebk sftware desn t exprt files that yu attach t yur.ntebk file as shrtcuts. If yu want t include an attachment, attach a cpy f the file (see Attaching files and webpages n page 89). SMART Ntebk sftware desn t exprt sme gradient, pattern and image effects. These effects might appear as a slid fill r appear incrrectly in the exprted file. Yu can als set SMART Ntebk sftware t save a.ntebk file in ne f the abve frmats autmatically when yu display a different page r after a specified perid f time (see Saving files autmatically n page 18). T exprt a file as webpages 1. Select File > Exprt As > Webpage. The Save As dialgue bx appears. 2. Brwse t where yu want t exprt the file. 3. Type a name fr the file in the File name bx. 4. Press Save. 15

Select a flder where yu want t exprt the files. 3. Select a picture frmat in the Image Type drp-dwn list. 4. Select a picture size in the Size drp-dwn list. 5. Press OK. T exprt a file as a PwerPint file 1. Select File > Exprt As > PwerPint. The Save As dialgue bx appears. 2. Brwse t where yu want t exprt the file. 3. Type a name fr the file in the File name bx. 4. Select PwerPint 2007 Files (*.pptx) r PwerPint Files (*.ppt) in the Save at type drp-dwn list. 5. Press Save. Yu can als imprt PwerPint files (see Imprting PwerPint files n page 84). T exprt a file as a PDF file 1. Select File > Exprt As > PDF. The Exprt PDF dialgue bx appears. 2. Press Thumbnails, Handuts r Full Page. 3. Optinally, type header text in the Header bx, fter text in the Fter bx and the current date in the Date bx. 4. Optinally, select the Shw page numbers check bx t shw a page number n each page. 5. If yu pressed Thumbnails r Handuts in step 2, select a thumbnail size in the Thumbnail size drp-dwn list and, ptinally, select the Page brders tickbx t shw a brder arund each thumbnail and the Thumbnail titles tickbx t shw titles under each thumbnail. 16

Separate individual page numbers with cmmas and separate page ranges with a hyphen (fr example, 1,2,4-7). 7. Press Save. The Save as PDF File dialgue bx appears. 8. Brwse t where yu want t exprt the file. 9. Type a name fr the file in the File name bx. 10. Press Save. T exprt a file as a CFF file 1. Select File > Exprt As > CFF. The Save As dialgue bx appears. 2. Brwse t where yu want t exprt the file. 3. Type a name fr the file in the File name bx. 4. Press Save. Yu can als imprt CFF files (see Imprting files frm ther interactive whitebard prgrams n page 85). Printing files Yu can print all pages r select pages in a.ntebk file. Yu can print the pages as thumbnails, handuts r full pages. T print a file 1. Select File > Print. The Print dialgue bx appears. 2. Press Thumbnails, Handuts r Full Page. 3. Optinally, type header text in the Header bx, fter text in the Fter bx and the current date in the Date bx. 4. Optinally, select the Shw page numbers check bx t shw a page number n each page. 17

SMART Ntebk sftware autmatically saves the file with the.ntebk file extensin. 8. Press Save. T save a file autmatically as webpages 1. Select File > Timed Saves. The Timed Save Wizard appears. 2. Select Every time I mve t a different page t exprt yur file autmatically when yu display a different page. OR Select 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes r 30 minutes t exprt yur file autmatically after a specified perid f time. 3. Press Next. 4. Select Webpage (HTML). 5. Press Next. This is useful when there are a lt f pages in a file. T create r edit a grup 1. If the Page Srter isn t visible, press Page Srter. 2. Press the first grup s menu arrw and then select Edit Page Grups. All the grups and pages fr the current file are displayed. Grups appear as blue bars and pages appear as thumbnails: If yu created and edited the grups in this file, the pages appear under the blue bars yu created and renamed. If yu haven t edited the grups, a default grup titled Grup 1 appears and includes all f the pages and their thumbnails belw its blue bar. Thumbnails belw each blue bar include the same menu arrw ptins as thumbnails in the Page Srter. This enables yu t press a thumbnail in a grup, select its menu arrw and then delete the page, clear the page, insert a new page, clne the page, rename the page, add a Screen Shade t the page r add the page t the Gallery. 3. Press the Add New Grup buttn in the upper right-hand crner. A new grup, with a new, blank page, appears. 4. Type a new name fr the grup. 27

Writing r drawing digital ink enables yu t quickly add cntent t yur SMART Ntebk sftware files, either when creating the files r when presenting the files t students. Once yu have created digital ink, yu can erase it. Writing r drawing digital ink The easiest way t write r draw digital ink is t use yur interactive display s pen r pens. Yu can als create freehand bjects using the Pens tl. The Pens tl enables yu t write r draw digital ink using the fllwing pen types: Pen type Purpse and example Ntes Standard Calligraphic Write r draw digital ink in a variety f clurs and line styles. Write r draw digital ink, like yu d with the Standard pen type, but with lines f varying thickness. Using the Standard pen type, yu can write r draw digital ink that fades after a few secnds (see Using the Standard pen type t create fading bjects n page 133). The Calligraphic pen type is useful fr teaching students handwriting. Crayn Write r draw crayn-like digital ink. The Crayn pen type is intended fr artistic wrk, such as painting and cluring pictures, rather than writing. Highlighter Highlight text and ther bjects. 32

If yu want t write wrds n the same line but dn t want them cmbined, leave a large gap between them, use different pens, r briefly put the pen in the pen tray befre writing anther wrd (interactive whitebards nly). If yu want t write diagnally, write in a straight line, and then rtate it (see Rtating bjects n page 67). If yu want t write in small letters, write large letters, and then reduce their size (see Resizing bjects n page 65). Yu can fill areas that yu ve enclsed with digital ink (see Filling digital ink drawings n page 57). Erasing digital ink Yu can erase digital ink frm yur interactive display using the eraser r the erasing gesture. If yu re erasing digital ink frm a.ntebk file page, yu can als erase bjects using the Eraser tl. Althugh yu can erase digital ink, yu re unable t erase ther types f bjects, including shapes, lines, text and pictures. T remve these types f bjects, yu must delete them (see Deleting bjects n page 70). T erase digital ink 1. Press Eraser and then select an eraser type. 2. Erase the digital ink. 34

Creating shapes with the Shapes tl Yu can use the Shapes tl t create a variety f shapes, including perfect circles, perfect squares, perfect triangles, ther gemetric shapes, hearts, ticks and Xs. Yu can add a shape t yur page and then edit its prperties. Alternatively, yu can custmise a shape s utline clur, fill clur and line thickness and then add it t yur page. T create a shape 1. If yu spell a wrd incrrectly, SMART Ntebk sftware underlines the wrd in red. Yu can then right-click the wrd and select the crrect spelling frm a list f ptins. If yu prefer, yu can disable this feature and check the spelling using the Spelling Check dialgue bx. T disable autmatic spell checking 1. Press Text. 2. Press Mre Text Optins and then select Check Spelling. T manually check spelling f a text bject 1. Select the text bject. 2. Press the bject s menu arrw and then select Check Spelling. If SMART Ntebk sftware finds a misspelled wrd, the Spelling Check dialgue bx appears. This dialgue bx displays the misspelt wrd and suggests alternatives. 3. Inserting cntent frm the Gallery The Gallery is a tab in the SMART Ntebk sftware user interface where yu can brwse r search fr cntent and then add that cntent t yur.ntebk files. The Gallery cntains Lessn Activity Examples, which includes Activity Builder examples (see Creating a matching lessn activity n page 110), interactive techniques and 3D mdels t aid yu in creating lessn activities. When yur system administratr installs SMART Ntebk sftware, he r she can install the fllwing additinal items: Gallery Essentials is a cllectin f thusands f pictures, multimedia bjects and mre, rganised int subject-specific categries. Lessn Activity Tlkit is a cllectin f custmisable tls and templates that yu can use t create prfessinal-lking and interactive lessns. When yu select a categry r subcategry in the list, its cntents appear in the bttm sectin f the Gallery. Thumbnails in the categries prvide preview images f the cntent. In Pictures, pictures appear as thumbnails. If yu later create a transparent area in the picture, the picture is n lnger ptimised. T create a transparent area in a picture 1. Select the picture. 2. In sme situatins, yu might want t select a layut that is different frm the layut f the keybard cnnected t yur cmputer (fr example, t teach a secnd language). In these situatins, the n-screen keybard wrks crrectly, but the keybard cnnected t yur cmputer might nt. Fr best results, ensure that the layut yu select is identical t the layut f the keybard cnnected t yur cmputer. Fr example, if an English (US) keybard is cnnected t yur cmputer, select English (United States) in this drp-dwn list. Fr infrmatin n keybard layuts, see 6. Press OK. T set the cnnectin ptins 1. Updating and activating SMART sftware Once yu have installed SMART sftware, yu need t activate it. Once yu have activated the sftware, yu need t install updates frm SMART. I M P O R T A N T T update and activate SMART sftware, yu need t be cnnected t the Internet. Updating SMART sftware SMART peridically releases updates t its sftware and firmware prducts. When the user using the pen presses a buttn in the tlbar, the selected tl r ptin changes fr the user using his r her finger instead. Recmmendatin If a dwn arrw appears n the right side f the tlbar, press it t display additinal tlbar buttns. If yur desired buttn desn t appear when yu click the dwn arrw, yu r anther user might have remved the buttn (see Custmising the tlbar n page 155).
